Obituary of Sarah Leader Auxer

Sarah Leader Auxer was one of the older sisters of my great-great grandmother, Catharine Auxer Niess. Sarah and her older sister, Harriet, were the only two daughters that never married. Harriet died when she was only 51, Sarah lived until she was 72.
I have found several accounts of her death. Two in the Harrisburg Telegraph, which follow the rather detailed first one. The first account of her death appears to be from a Sunday School publication. I received it as a typewritten article,so I have no idea where it was published.

Sarah Leader Auxer was born March 19, 1846 - Died Nov. 1st 1918, aged 72 years, 7 months, 12 days.

The first religious impressions on her were made under the labors of Elder George Zeigler in 1854.

In 1864 their family moved to this city from Lancaster County, Pa. She went to the alter, was truly converted and joined the 4th St. Church of God and was baptized under the pastorate of Rev. D.A. Laverty.

Miss Auxer was active in established the missions of "All Workers" at Green and Cadler Streets and Nagle Street being the teacher in the Sunday School. After, with her sisters attending the three places on a Sunday.

For many years she was a teacher in the Sunday School. A member of the Church Choir, the Christian Endeavor Society and at the time of her death, Superientendent of the Home Dept. of the Sunday School.

Handwritten; Unsigned

This may have appeared in the same publication; it was surely from a Church paper.

IN MEMORIAM

Whereas: -- In the Providence of an All-Wise and loving Father, a Messenger from the Realms of Light and Glory, has again come to our cirlce, and called from our number Miss Sara A. Auxer: and,

Whereas: - - Our Sister was devoted and faithful in everything that pertained to the Welfare of our Class, and to all the interests of our Master's Cause and Kingdom: and,

Whereas: - - The unbidden tears becloud our eyes as we realize the fact, that, never again, in this sphere of action, in this - - our Class - - No. 1, shall we see the smiling face and hear the gentle voice of our dear, departed Sister. Therefore, be it - -

Resolved - - That we sorrow not as do those who have no hope: but that amid the falling tears, we will, with hopeful, joyful hearts repeat the language of The Book: - -

Resolved: - - that the language of the Poet be Sentiment of our hearts: --

"Sister, thou wert mild and lovely,
Gentle as the Summer Breeze;
Pleasant as the air of evening ---
When it floats among the trees.

Dearest Sister, thou hast left us;
Here thy loss we deeply feel:
But 'tis God who has bereft us, --
He can all our sorrows heal.

Yet - - again we hope to meet thee,
In a fairer, happier Land;
In the Home of Light and Glory:
With the Ransomed - - Myriad Band!

Resolved: - - That these Resolutions be placed on Record in the Minute Book of the Church
of the Fourth Street Church of God Sunday School, and a copy be given to the nearest relatives of the departed: the same to be addressed to Mrs. Susan Lucas: in the care of Mrs. Mary Keefer.
