John Auxer, Esq.
Jane Park Auxer
Henry Stoll Auxer
Caroline Auxer

First of all, isn't that an awesome picture?? It was a beautiful, crisp, fall afternoon when we visited this cemetery. The wind had been blowing and stripped many of the trees of their final leaves. There were thunderheads in the background, and enough of a breeze to cause the flags to blow!

John Auxer was the brother of my g-g-g-g-grandfather, Michael Auxer, Jr. Michael lived in Elizabethtown, John lived in Marietta. Both are in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about ten miles apart. John and his family are buried in the Marietta Cemetery. The picture shows the site where John's family is buried. From left to right ~ the short stone is that of Caroline, the next one is Henry Stoll and the broken one belongs to Jane. Next to Jane is a stone that has been knocked over and is face down in the earth. That stone is the one that belongs to John. This is the condition I found the site in the first time I was at the cemetery. We returned to the cemetery with a bar to lift the stone and this is what we found. . . . . JOHN!

All four of these have very simple inscriptions. John's reads:

Our Father at Rest
JOHN AUXER
Died March 3, 1870
aged 68 Years

For another picture of this headstone, please check the bottom of the page.

Caroline's stone has a very simple inscription. It reads as follows:

IN
memory of
CAROLINE AUXER
aged 12 years
6 months &
24 days

Henry's stone is also very simple. Surprisingly enough, neither of these stones have either the birth dates or death dates of these young people.

IN
memory of
HENRY S. AUXER
aged 19 years
5 months & 22 days
Beloved in life
Remembered in death

As mentioned above, Jane's stone was broken in half. You can see that in the photo above. My husband lifed the stone and put it where it had orignally been so I could take the picture. It was then put back where it had been. Jane's stone is hard to read.

JANE
Consort of
JOHN AUXER
DIED JULY 6, 1876.
Aged 66 Yrs & 11 days

There is an inscripton at the bottom, but, this is very difficult to read

This is how John's stone appeared after it had been upright for about 10 minutes. It was much easier to read.
