Obituary of Robert Carvell

Robert Alfred Carvell was the first of six children born to the marriage of Alfred M. and Grace McDonnell Carvell. He died Thursday, August 29, 1992 in Hettinger, North Dakota. The following obituary appeared in the Bismarck Tribune on September 1, 1992. It was sent to me by one of his descendants.

MOTT - Funeral services for the man who was Mott's pharmacist for almost half a century, Robert A. Carvell, were held Monday at St. Vincent's Church, Mott, with the Rev. Dennis Schafer officiating.

Special music for the service was provided by Maria Mosher, organist, Don and Delores Loh, and his grandchildren assisted by David and Peggy Crane as vocalists. Burial was in St. Vincents's cemetery, with military rites by Taylor Skartvedt American Legion Post.

Born in Garrison on Nov. 28, 1918, to Alfred and Grace (McDonnell) Carvell, he grew up in Fargo and graduated from Fargo Central High School. After graduating from North Dakota State University with a degree in pharmacy, he was an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and then moved to Mott to work as a pharmacist. During World War II he served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was discharged as a captain.

Mr. Carvell married Adeline Svihovec of Mott on Sept. 28, 1944, at Mott. In 1946 he purchased the Mott Drug Store which has been in existence since the town's founding and has owned and operated it ever since.

In addition to serving as president of the Mott School Board, Mr. Carvell also served on Mott's zoning board and on the St. Vincent Parish Council. He was a member of Mott Lions Club, Knights of columbus, Mott Chamber of commerce, North Dakota Pharmaceutical Association and American Legion.

He is survived by three daughters, Mary Pat Schwartz and Peggy Fiedler, both of Mott, and Nancy Exner, Jamestown; three sons, Kevin, Fargo, Charles, Bismarck, and Robert, Great Falls, Mont.; one brother, James, Rancho Mirage, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Jo Seeba, Fargo, and Pat Maris, Gainesville, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren, Ben, Tasha, Alison, Theresa, Kelsey, Ryan, Kate, Robert, Joseph, Elliot and Claire.
