Philip Kleis Auxer, Obituary

Philip Kleis Auxer was my great-great-great grandfather. He was a coachmaker in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. After the death of his wife in 1877, he had his mother-in-law living with him until her death in 1884. Philip died in 1886. The following notice of his death appeared in The Church Advocate, a publication of The Church of God on February 24, 1886:

AUXER-On Jan. 27, 1880, in Harrisburg, Pa., Philip K. Auxer, aged 75 years, 9 months and 21 days.

The subject of this notice was born in Lancaster county, Pa., Losing his father at an early day, he was placed among strangers where he was trained to a life of honesty and industry. Through the influence of some one he was early led to make a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, in which profession he contined until the day of his death. It was his early training and his fidelity to the Lord Jesus, which made him the kind husband, the affectionate parent and the excellent citizen. These graces were always prominent in his life; for he ever manifested that kind and social spirit which characterizes the true Christian. His great aim in life was do right, believing that this was one of the cardinal principles of the Christian and social life. But he regarded a vital union with Christ as the first essential of such a life, and that such a union would make us partakers of the Spirit of Christ who would lead us into all truth. With these convictions he lived and died. And when the final hour came he was enabled to assure his children and friends that the God whom he trusted all the days of his life would keep him and guide him into the haven of rest. May God bless those who are left and finally bring them all into the haven of eternal repose. Funeral services by the Rev. --Cook, of the Lutheran Church, assisted by the writer. J.M. Carvell
