Elmer was the only son of Joseph Britton and Mary Hyle Carvell given a middle name in the family Bible. He married Maggie E. Peiffer in Thompsontown on February 25, 1890. The following obituary is from Juniata Sentinel and Republican, Wednesday, June 24, 1936, Mifflintown, Pennsylvania:
Elmer E. Carvell, aged 68 years, died Thursday afternoon at his home in Mifflin. Mr. Carvell is survived by his widow and by one son, Cloyd Carvell, and a daughter Mrs. Gibson Pannebaker, both of Mifflin, and another daughter, Mrs. Thad. Walter, of Elkhart, Indiana.The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Guss Funeral Home in Mifflintown. Rev. W. Jones was in charge. Interment was made in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Mifflintown.
