David BRAND 1831 - 1888

(3rd David in line)

David BRAND (the 3rd David in line) was born in Kincardine on Forth, Perth, Scotland about 1831. He was the first child of David BRAND and Agnes GRAY.

David married Janet CHRISTIE at Causewayheath in Stirlingshire, Scotland on 7 February 1852. Janet was born 1 July 1833 at Logie, Stirling. Janet was the eldest daughter (and 3rd child) of William CHRISTIE and Jean ANDERSON.

Between 1852 and 1857 the family appears to have lived at Alva in Stirling and Alloa in Clackmannan. Their 4th child was born at Greenock in Renfrewshire in 1858, and the family appears to have remained here until at least the early 1900's.

From the 1861 Census and onwards, David BRAND was a sawyer and jointly owned a Sawmill in Greenock with Alexander ALLISON. David died at the age of 56 on 7 January 1888 from -?- Peritonitis, which he had suffered from for 9 days. I wonder if this had anything to do with a sawmill accident? See below for a transcript of his Inventory of Personal Estate.

Janet continued to live in Greenock and 3 years later the 1891 Census finds her and the 3 youngest children living 2 doors down the road. Actually, it appears that between 1861 and 1891, the family never seemed to have moved any further than about 500 meters - from Roslin Street, Kirk Street, West Blackhall Street and West Stewart Street - and 2nd son William lived on Jamaica Street in 1891. Go to the BRAND Documents for more Census records and Certificates.
