Johann Friederich Ludwig HOEPPER, his wife Friederike and their 2 children, Frederick and Friedrike, departed Hamburg, Germany aboard the ship 'La Rochelle' on 5 August 1865. Friederike's parents Wilhelm and Justine Schoenwald and her brothers and sisters were also onboard. The Hoepper's 2 year old daughter Friedrike died from pneumonia on 23 September 1865 and was buried at sea the next day. The 'La Rochelle' stopped at Simon's Town on the Cape Of Good Hope on 18 October due to the illness of many of the passengers. It was not until 19 November that health officials would allow the ship to continue on it's journey. The 'La Rochelle' arrived near Brisbane on 27 December 1865. All passengers were held in quarantine until 20 February 1866. John Frederick Louis and Friederike HOEPPER settled in Toowoomba, QLD and had 7 more children. All HOEPPER's in Australia are direct descendants of JFL Hoepper.
