Descendants of Johannes (1712) HAHN
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Johannes (1712) HAHN1 was born on 12 Jun 1712 in Freckenfeld, Germany. He died on 21 Apr 1793 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina. Family Tree Maker has made a number of errors in this
family's history. If this is your first foray into genealogy, be very careful about the FTM information.
The primary source for this work is "German Speaking People West of the Catawba River 1750-1800" by Lorena Shell Eaker. She alsopublished The Shoe Cobbler's Kin, A Genealogy of the Peter Eaker Sr.
Family 1701-1976 Vol. I and 1985 Vol. II. The Hahn family is detailed in this as well, along with many other Catawba County, NC families.
The names are very confusing. For instance, I found Johannes, Johann, Johan, John; Uttilla, Othelia, Othile, who may be sisters or may be the same person; Anna, Anna Mary, Anna Magdalena, Magdalena,
Magdalina; Marie, Maria; Catherine, Catharine; Catherina, Catharina; Simpson, Sampson; and many, many names that were the same as an aunt or mother, uncle or father, cousin, and in some instances
similar names within a family.
Note from Linda: often while searching census records, I found the surname spelled Hawn rather than Hahn. There is a rumor that Johannes changed his surname to Hahn to honor King George but I have
yet to see any proof. If someone has proof, please let me know. I can't imagine how changing his name would in any way honor King George.
I also found conflicting information in databases compiled by other people but it's obvious these people are only copying what they saw somewhere else. I used Mrs. Eaker's work because of her
personal viewing or reports from people knowledgeable in the field when viewing and recording documents. Family Tree Maker has made a number of errors in this family's history.

The following is from Shoe Cobbler's Kin by Lorena Shell Eaker, used by permission:
"Johannes Hahn b. 6-12-1712 Freckenfeld, Germany (Rhenish Bavaria) m. (1) ca 1736-37 Freckenfeld (?) Elizabeth Margaretha Forster b. ca 1715 Germany d. ca 1760 Pa.
His second marriage was in 1763 Pa. to Agnes Langlin b. 4-14-1730 Darnmsatdt, Pfalz, Germany d. 4-13-1814 Lincoln Co., N.C., dau. of Johannes Langlin, who came to the colonies Sept. 26, 1737 on Ship
St. Andrew Galley bringing his family with him. Agnes was baptised on Nov. 7, 1734 at Dirmstein, Germany (about 20 miles

south of Freckenfeld). Johannes and Elizabeth Margaretha arrived in
Philadelphia, Pa. on Ship Janet (or Ganet) 10/17/1751. Elizabeth died in Pa. Johannes married Agnes 1765. Johannes Jacob Hahn Jr. appears in the Freckenfeld Lutheran Church records on 8 April 1736 as
the single son of Johan Jacob Hahn.
"Elisabetha Margaretha appears on the same date as single daughter of Jonas Forester or Forster. However, the names Conrad and Johann Jacob Jr. appear as brothers on church documents. They immigrated
to Pa. with other Hahns. Birth records of Maria Catherina, Maria Margaretha, Johannes Jr., Anna Maria, Johannes Jacob, Elizabeth Margaretha, Benedict, Joshua and George were taken from birth records
of the Lutheran Church at Freckenfeld Pfalz, Germany, now in the State Archives at Speyer, Germany."
(Note from Linda: Family Tree Maker and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints lists brothers of Johannes as Conrad, b. 1714 Renish, Bavaria, Germany; and Johann Jacob Hahn Jr. b. Feb.
1726/27.)
From Mrs. Eaker's account: "Johannes and wife, Elizabeth Margaretha, came with the surviving children to America on Ship Janet. He subscribed and took the oath of allegiance on Oct. 7, 1751...left an
account of his life...
"I, Johannes Hahn born June 12, 1712 Freckenfeld in Germany near Landau in the
Two Bridge community named Gutenberg. In the year 1751,I came to this part of the world called America. Written Sept. 12, 1789.
"Walter Hahn makes note that the Two Bridge Community was on the estate or domain of two bridges. Freckenfeld is located some nine miles west of the Rhine River and about the same distance south of
the city of Landau. This district is now known as Freckenfelt, 1d,Pf. Germany. Landau can be located on some maps on the extreme southern border of Bavaria...
"According to tradition, Johannes and Agnes' first child, Christian, was born on the first night of their arrival in Lincoln Co., N.C.where they were camped on the east bank of Clark's Creek."
You can read the account by Col. George Yoder at the request of Abel Quincy Hawn and the addendum by Abel Quincy's great-granddaughter Allie Hawn Glenn
here. Col. Yoder is short on facts and long on
supposition but in those days he would have had little to draw from.
More supposition intersperspersed with fact from Walter Hahn, "Walter Hahn's
note: Johannes Hahn took up camp at that location for four weeks and within this period of time, in company with his sons, set about to locate their home in the south. After a few days prospecting,
he located and selected a homesite on both sides of Henry's River, now Burke and Catawba County line. After a house, the next building erected was a building to shelter the stock, and a loom house,
for his loom, since he was a weaver by trade. The location of the above homesite of Pioneer Hahn is five miles east or southeast ofthe present city of Hickory, N.C.
Living in the wide open spaces, families had to call on all their resources just to survive. For instance, the efforts of Johannes Hahn's daughters on one occasion are recounted in Dr. Gary Freeze's "The Catawbans," a historical perspective of the region.

"Tories rode up unexpectly on the farm of John Hahn one day. Hahn, who lived a mile south of Henry Weidner, had stood with other Whigs in the pledge of loyalty under the famous oak. Hahn was in the weave shed and quickly hid a bag of money under the floor. When Hahn refused to reveal the location of the bag, the Tories found a rope, looped it around his neck and according to G. M. Yoder, "drew him up till he turned blue." Exasperated, the Tories left the gasping Hahn and went to his barn to steal his horse. Two daughters rushed from the house, stationed themselves at the stable door, armed with axes, and announced to the bandits that "they intended to make sausage" of the first man to enter the door. The bandits left. Since Hahn lived until 1791, the daughters must have then rushed to free his neck."
Col. Yoder continued in the Hahn document, "In North Carolina he reared a second family. In addition to Christian, there were Peter, Jacob, Frederick, Utilla, Sarah and possibly one named Othelia. The earlier accounts on this family lists one
unnamed daughter as having married
Andrew Marks. One account only lists her name as Othelia. Grandfather Hahn did not indicate her name in the will. Perhaps she was the same as Utilly and had two marriages."
Mrs. Eaker was unable to determine anything further by the records in the N.C. State Dept. of Archives regarding the settlement of the estate.
"Legal document: Lincoln County, N.C. Deedbook 16 pg. 301: Oct. 12,1790
Christian Neigh of Lincoln County, N.C. to Martin Speagle and John Hawn,
Trustees of the Lutheran Congregation on Jacobs River, the South Fork of the
Catawba River, for five pounds lawful money of the state of North Carolina. Ten acres for the purpose of these Deutsch Lutheran congregation for divine Worship and school to instruct youth. Part of
20 acres of land granted to Christian
Neigh of the then county of Burke on Warrant Fe. 10, 1779 and granted May 18, 1789 in Lincoln Co., N.C. Signed Michael Cline, Johannes Hahn, Andrew Stockinger, Christian Nei.
"The first church structure was a two story log affair about 30 by 36 ft. and finished with neatness and considerable ornament for that period. There was a
balcony across the south end, but only those who sat on the front row of the balcony could see the pastor, the beauty of the pulpit and the chancel. A sounding board was placed over the
pulpit.
(Mrs. Eaker's note: the foregoing description was found in the N.C. State Dept. of Archives in the church records. A similar account was given in "History of Catawba County" edited by Charles J.
Preslar Jr. which also gives the following record about our Hahn progenitor:
("The edifice of the church was completed during the latter part of 1791. A
granddaughter of Trustee (Johannes) Hahn, Saloma Weaver (daughter of Conrad and Elizabeth Margaret Hahn Weaver, was born March 18, 1791 and the grandfather was especially anxious that the child be
baptised in the new church. The father, however, not being pleased with the idea of deferring the baptismal, had the child baptised at St. Paul's Church) (a few miles away)." Please see the history of
Zion Church elsewhere in these pages.
(Mrs. Eaker's note: the dispute must have been no small one to have been recorded in the county history. The Deutsch Lutheran Church later changed the name to Zion Lutheran Church and is still in
existence today and sits atop a small knoll off of Highway 127 five miles south of Hickory, N.C. She continues, "History records that Grandfather Johannes Hahn was one of the very first if not the first to be
buried in the cemetery adjoining that church lot."
Inscription on the tombstone in German, translated by Walter Hahn, "The one on the cross is my love, My love is Jesus Christ, Johannes Han, born June 12, 1712, Died April 21, 1793."
A letter from Louis Fournier, which can be found in the letters section, says says that Johannes died at the age of 77 years.
Agnes Langlin Hahn is buried by his side with only a crude stone marker
indicating her grave.

11 x. Rebecca HAHN was born on 12 Dec 1756 in York Co., Pennsylvania. No further record. Might have married Andrew Marks.
Second marriage
Johannes (1712) HAHN and Agnes LANGLE LEGNIN LANGLIN (The confusion comes about because there is no certainty which last name is proper) were married on 26 Jul 1757 in York Co., Pennsylvania, United
States. Agnes was baptised on Nov. 7, 1734 at Dirmstein, Germany (about 20 miles south of Freckenfeld).

12 i.
Maria Barbara HAHN22 was born on 21 Apr 1758 in

Peter HAHN23 was born about 1765 in York Co., Pa.. He died in Clark Co., IN. Peter Hahn, son of Johannes Hahn and Agnes Langlin is listed in N.C. records as having gone to Indiana in 1811. Both
he and his wife were listed on Lincoln County records in 1810 census as being over 45 years of age and on 1820 census of Clark Co. He may have had sons George and John. Peter was confirmed at South
Fork in 1779. He may be the one listed in the estate records of Henry Reep 11 Jun 1816 Clark Co. Peter Hahn who went to Clark Co., Ind. appears to have had a son George and a George appears in Mo.
1820- 1830, both near same age and both too young to have been Johannes' sons or to fit the slot on which George was depicted. LDS records say Peter was
born 1768 in Lincoln County, NC.

North Carolina.
Note: History has always and forever recorded Frederick Hahn's wife's name as Elizabeth Fisher; however a chest handed down through the Abel Quincy Hawn family was inscribed on the back in berry juice, "Caroline Fisher Hahn" and a date, which is unavailable because the chest has been refinished. It is presumed that Elizabeth's name was Caroline, either as a first name, a middle name or a nickname. It is now owned by the Neil Bost Glenn family of Vero Beach, FL. Neil Glenn is a direct descendant of Johannes through his son, Frederick Hahn. LHS.
