First Generation

 

1.  Frederick HAHN[1] was born on 15 Jan 1777 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  He died on 12 May 1857 in Catawba  County, North Carolina. 

Buried at Zion Lutheran Church.  History records Frederick's wife's name as Elizabeth Fisher but a family member has a handmade chest, now refinished (2009) that bears the inscription "Caroline Fisher Hahn" and a date, now obliterated. The family member is descended from Frederick and Elizabeth/Caroline.

 

Frederick HAHN and Caroline Elizabeth FISHER were married on 30 Mar 1808 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  Caroline Elizabeth FISHER[2],[3] (daughter of Thomas FISHER and Anna Marie MULLER) was born on 13 Aug 1786 in Lincoln County, NC.  She died on 28 Jul 1853 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina. 

Buried at Zion Lutheran Church.

3.  Johannes  (2) (John) HAHN[7] (Frederick-1) was born on 2 Apr 1815.  He died on 6 Dec 1898.  He was buried in Millers & St. Stephens Lutheran Church Cemetery..

Burns, JP.[8]  Elizabeth (Betsy) DEITZ[9],[10] (daughter of Solomon DEITZ and Elizabeth DIETZ) was born on 4 Apr 1821 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  She died on 16 Mar 1888 in Catawba County, Hickory, NC.  She was buried in Millers & St. Stephens Lutheran Church Cemetery..  Mrs. Eaker says Betsy Deitz was born 1 April 1821, Betty White says she was born 31 Jan 1857. Betty Iona Sweat says the birth date was 5 Apr. 1821 in Lincoln County and was christened 5 Aug. 1821.

"I have a picture of Wesley and Jane Hawn standing in front of an old

log house which may have been taken in Hickory in the Kenworth

section...article written by the Hickroy Daily Record dated April 30,

1966. The article showed a picture of an old bake oven...said the

oven stood behind the home of Wes Hawn...according to the Feb. 12,

1937 edition of The Record. It was said to have been built some 130

years ago by pioneer John Hawn." House located at Third Ave. Drive

NE, Hickory in Kenworth section; featured as historical home in "From

Tavern To Town," a  book about the City of Hickory's historical

homes.

 

Kay writes, "I remember playing around that old barn when I was

young. Jack and Sam were mother's brothers."

Hawn, son of Abner and Catherine, married to Frances Bollinger, dau. of Joseph and L., on 1 Dec 1889. This conflict needs to be resolved.

A legend written on the back, presumably in berry juice, proclaimed that the chest was the property of "Caroline Fisher Hahn" and a date accompanied it. The date is now lost. Previously, all historical records bore Frederick's wife's name as Elizabeth Fisher.

(Pennie) KILLIAN) was buried on 25 Apr 65 in Maiden Cemrtery.  She was born on 2 Jun 1875 in home Maiden, (Catawba County) NC.  She died coronary occlusion on 23 Apr 1965 in Catawba County NC.  1880 Census shows Candace J.                                                                                Born Sept. 28, 1919, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Edward and Louetta Hawn Kanupp.

                                                                               A member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church, where he received the Lamb Award and was a former assistant Sunday school superintendent and assistant Sunday school teacher. On the church council, he was a scout master, retired from Shuford Mills and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

                                                                               He was preceded in death by three brothers, A.D. Kanupp, Tom Kanupp and Gordon Kanupp.

                                                                               Survivors include his wife, Louise Reinhardt Kanupp of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Lee Kanupp and wife, Ann, of Hickory; a grandson, Thad Kanupp of Hickory; a granddaughter, Callie Kanupp of Hickory; two nieces, Ruth Perkins of Newton and Betty Austin of Maiden; and a nephew, Ralph Kanupp of Hickory.

                                                                               The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Randall Cauble at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church.

                                                                               The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

                                                                               Burial will be in the church cemetery.

                                                                               The family will be at the church from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

Hawn in 1910 (this author's grandfather.)

Conover - Nannie Elizabeth Hawn Sipe, 99, of County Home Road, died

Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born Dec.

7, 1907, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Abel

Quincy and Mary Claudia Bost Hawn. She was a very active member of

Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Conover and the Women of the ELCA.

Nannie was a charter member of the quilting group for Lutheran World

Relief, which provided quilts and bookbags around the world. She made

her last quilts and bookbags at the age of 98. In addition to her

parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Earl Sipe;

a grandson, Mark Herman Sipe; four sisters; and three brothers.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Neill and Dorothy

Eckard Sipe of Hickory and Ned Eugene and Marolyn Herman Sipe of

Conover; a foster son, Rayford Hahn Clement of Linwood; grandchildren

and spouses, Neill and Laura Sipe of Claremont, Duane and Debbie Sipe

of Hickory, Scottie and Dale Smith of Newton, Tina Sipe of Conover

and Julie and Alan Klutz of Newton; eight great-grandchildren; and

four great-great-grandchildren. A Service of Remembrance will be held

at 4 p.m. today, Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Mount Zion Lutheran

Church in Conover, with the Revs. Dr. David Seymour and Kristine Hill

officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family

will be at the church from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. prior to the service.

Pallbearers who will be serving are Kevin Sipe, Jason Sipe, Brian

Sipe, Brenton Smith, Nicholas Sipe and Addison Klutz. Honorary

pallbearer will be Austin Klutz. Memorials may be made to Mount Zion

One says 5 Feb 1902, the other says 11 Jan 1902  He died on 21 Sep 1980 in Catawba County, Hickory, NC.  He was buried in St. Paul's Memorial Park, Newton, North Carolina.

It is not known who he was married to.  This family has conflicting dates; in some cases the dates are very informal, such as "aft 1905" and in others they are very specific,such as 21 July 1917. Looking at the image of the 1910 Census I saw that Bessie was listed as what looked to be Booker. Then the last listed shows Eddie Barker. The scrawl the writer has made it nearly inpossible to read properly. The Transcriber didn't help any at all by listing all the kids below Bessie as "Booker" either.

However looking at the North Carolina Birth Index, 1800-2000 we find Bessie Myrtle with Edgar T (Thomas) Barker giving birth three times.

Daisy Pearl HAWN and John H. DRUM were married on 12 Nov 1911 in Catawba County, Hickory, NC.[206]  John H. DRUM was born before 1890.[207]  This family has conflicting dates; in some cases the dates are very informal, such as "aft 1905" and in others they are very specific,such as 21 July 1917. I chose the specific date whenever possible.

Ruhama Baptist Church Cemetery, Newton, North Carolina.

                                       OBITUARY CONOVER - Gracie Sipe Lail, 81, of Conover, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Conover Nursing Center. Born Sept. 5, 1922, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Wilburn and Katie Hawn Sipe. She retired from Carolina Glove in Conover and was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Conover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Henry Lail; a daughter, Betty Joe Lail; two sisters, Allie Farr and Nadine Sipe; and two brothers, Gwen and Melvin Sipe. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce L. and Wayne Eckard of Conover; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Lee and Frances Lail of Conover; a sister, Bernice White of Catawba; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Conover. The Revs. Kristine Hill and Harold Drum will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight, Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Mount Zion Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to Mount Zion Lutheran Church, Scholarship Fund, 4420 County Home Road, Conover, N.C. 28613. [Hickory Daily Record - Sunday, January 11, 2004] 

She was buried in Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Conover.  One record shows a daughter, Betty Jo Lail born 29 Mar 1939, died 1 Apr 1939, buried Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Conover. Am doing further research.
