Christian Hahn

1. Christian HAHN[1] was born on 27 Oct 1765 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  He died on 19 Feb 1849 in Lincoln, Catawba, North Carolina.  He was buried in Zion Lutheran Church, Hickory, NC.  It seems some of Christian's children spelled their name HAWN.

Tradition says Christian was born the first night Johannes and Agnes arrived in NC, camping on the banks of Clark's Creek, near the home of Catawba County, NC pioneer Henry Weidner.

Both Christian and Anna are buried at Zion Lutheran Church, Hickory, NC.

Legend says Christian went to Missouri but there are no records of him being there. He is shown on the 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses in NC. The 1840 census in Perry County, MO has a Christian Hawn with young children; at age 75, this is unlikely to be Johannes's Christian.

Christian HAHN and Anna Magdalena SHELL were married in 1795 in NC.  Anna Magdalena SHELL was born on 29 Jun 1770 in York Co., Pennsylvania, United States.  She died on 27 Jul 1854.  She was buried in Zion Lutheran Church, Hickory, NC.  Anna Magdalena was born in Hampden Twp., now Cumberland Co. Bp June    1773 at the Reformed Congregation Church, Hagerstown, Md.  Christian HAHN and Anna Magdalena SHELL had the following children:

            11. Samuel HAWN[2] was born about 1797 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  He died in 1873 in St. Genevieve Co., Mo..  Samuel was married twice, although the records are confusing  because Samuel the son of Johannes died young or for some other  reason did not come to NC.  Samuel and Barbara moved to Missouri during the winter of 1851. The farm they owned was part in St. Genevieve Co. and part in St. Francis Co., Mo.

1850 census spells surname as Honn.

Obituary of Rufus Hawn, son of Samuel and Barbara, states Samuel was a carpenter, moved to Missouri in 1851, settling in St. Genevieve County. Barbara died in 1869, Samuel in 1873.

Samuel HAWN and Mary or Polly CONRAD were married on 13 Sep 1819 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  Mary or Polly CONRAD was born about 1800.  She died about 1820.  IGI shows marriage of Polly Conrad and Samuel Hawn 24 Jan. 1801; more likely Polly was born 24 Jan. 1801 and they were married in 1819. This is one case of error in the IGI.

John Walter HAHN and Mary Victoria WHITENER were married on 21 Dec 1897 in Catawba  County, North Carolina.[246]  Mary Victoria WHITENER[247] (daughter of Zora Babel WHITENER and Mary ARNDT) was born on 30 Mar 1867.  She died on 29 May 1938 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina.  She was buried in Weidner-Robinson Cemetery, Catawba County, North Carolina.  Beryl Fisher Hawn wrote to Derick S. Hartshorn on Nov. 6 2000 and provided the following information:  "John Walter Hawn was the son of  Elisha L. Hawn and  Rhoda Ward, and the grandson of Christian Hahn Jr  and Anna Hahn.  (They were cousins - same last name).  Mary Victoria was the daughter of Zora Babel  Whitener and Mary Arndt. In Anne McAllister's book "Through Four Generations" I found this info on pages 360-361. Anne McAllister turned out to be our kinfolk through the Whitener line. A second cousin I think it was. The Hickory Mercury , date 22 Dec 1897 had the wedding announcement: "Mr. Walter J. Hawn and Miss Victoria M. Whitener, the accomplished  daughter of Mr.Z. B.  Whitener, were married at the residence of the bride's father on December 21stby Rev. J. L. Murphy. A large crowd of friends and relatives were present."  ( page 371 of Anne's book). On page 361 there is the obit for Mary Victoria which lists her children: W. Russell Hahn of North Arlington, NJ (Walter Russell - "Russ" , had one son) W. Oscar Hahn of Richmond, VA  (William Oscar - "Bill", had two daughters) Roy Hahn of Hickory, NC  (never married) Miss Ora Hahn of the Henderson City school faculty  (never married) Miss Mattie Hahn of the Maiden school faculty (Mathilda) Married, no children Mrs. S. H. Edwards of Greensboro NC. (Elizabeth, was a nurse, married  Sam Edwards, possibly had children)  I notice that all the sons are listed first, then all the girls,  regardless of birth order. All the girls attended college.  All the sons didn't.   H. Roy Hahn never married. He was considered "slow" by the family.  However, he wasn't so slow that he couldn't get his brother Russ up against a wall once when he really got mad at him. Russ worked as a railroad engineer.  So did Russ' son James Russell  Hawn, Sr. who is now retired from Amtrak and living in Florida. Mattie married Benjamin Fore from Texas. He was superintendent of school in Orange NJ, then they had an orange grove in FL. While visiting his family in Texas in 1962 the family home caught fire and Mattie made it out, but went back in to get her husband, and they both  died. Afterwards they discovered that her husband had already died of a heart attack during the fire. Mattie was brought home and is buried in Catawba Memorial Park, as is  H. Roy Hahn, and Ora Victoria Hahn.

Indeed, the 1850 census says he was born in Mississippi. But census takers often made errors in their work. If one looks at the Catawba County census for 1840, one will find that Christian Hahn is listed beside brothers Frederick and probably a nephew David. All lived in Upper Regiment, where many Hahns lived at that time.LHS)
