Benedict Hahn

First Generation

1.  Benedict HAHN[1] was born on 4 May 1750 in Frechenfeld, Germany.[2]  He died of Bright's disease between 1806 and 10 in Bollinger County, Mo..

LDS records say he died in Cape Girardeau County, MO.  From Mrs. Eaker: Please bear in mind that the children listed here for Benedict are purely fabrication-if nothing else, they are here for lack of a better place to put them.  Some of them could very well be children of John (d. 1801), but then the Indiana records conflict. This just seems to be one of those genealogical nightmares we never recover from!  This author welcomes any proof documents that might sort this out. (Note from Linda: If you wish, you can send those documents to me and I will send to Mrs. Eaker.)

Moved to Bollinger County, Mo. Military service: soldier in Revolutionary War, Patriot, rendered material aid, furnished supplies to N.C. Militia; occupation: farmer; church affiliation: Lutheran.

Lived about 1.5 miles north of Zion Lutheran Church near Hickory, N.C. His wife is doubtless buried at Zion in an unmarked grave.

Benedict left N.C. after 4/10/1806, as he was at the public sale of Casper Schell Sr. on that date and as his son Daniel's first child

was born in 1813 it is thought that he and his son went to Missouri at the same time.

(Information copied by Mary Hahn Abernethy from papers of Walter Hahn, son of Socrates Augustus Hahn, son of Jesse Hahn, son of David,

son of Benedict, son of Johannes and Elizabeth Margaretha. Information also obtained by Sarah Whitener Abernethy from additional

research.)

Benedict had a number of land transactions in NC, reputedly died of Bright's Disease. In Walter Hahn papers, he said he went to

Lutesville, Mo. and visited gravesite of Benedict who settled there after April 1806. He also writes that Daniel was a son of Benedict

and is buried in the Hahn Cemetery located on the Hahn homeplace on the south side of Possum Creek and on the east side of Hwy 51 south

of the present Marble Hill (Mo.) city limits. Mrs. Eaker says there is no evidence he was ever in Mo. According to the census, Benedict

had five or six sons and three daughters with one or two sons and two daughters gone from home by 1800. The records are very confusing.

Mrs. Eaker says his wife, whose name may be Houk, Hauck, Houck was born in Berks County, PA and was the daughter of Peter Houck and Anna

Maria Schwedener Houck

4.  Henry (2) HAHN (Benedict-1) was born about 1785 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  He died before 29 Jan 1839 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  He was listed on John Byrd's ledger as living at Whitewater, Cape  Girardeau, Mo. 1808. His wife was named Lavina when they sold land in   1820s. She was deceased before 1830 census. Children from estate  records. This has to be son of Benedict.

Lavina HAHN died before 1830 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Surname unknown; she has been given the surname of her husband for the purpose of these records.  Henry (2) HAHN and Lavina HAHN had the following children:

24                i.   Sarah (4) HAHN, born on 14 Apr 1812, Cape Girardeau, Missouri; married James CHEEK, on 30 Oct 1834, Cape Girardeau, Missouri; died on 11 Jan 1893, Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

25               ii.   Hannah (4) HAHN, born before 1830; married Daniel CRADER, before 1840.

26              iii.   Mary  (4) HAHN, born on 20 Sep 1834, Cape Girardeau, Missouri; married William MAY.

5.  Philip (2) HAHN[18] (Benedict-1) was born about 1783 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  He died after 1850 in Bollinger County, Mo..  From Mrs. Eaker: Records are unclear. Some believe this was son of John d. 1801 but he   doesn't quite fit. John identifies his youngest children as being  minors and Philip isn't one of the minors which would make his  birthdate prior to 1780 and this Philip doesn't fit that time period.   However John Jr.'s son Philip has not been identified. There is a Bible record believed to be the children of Philip. It was printed in 1830 and the handwriting is unclear but appears to be done   from memory and out of order. The children listed here are  supposition.

On 1850 census, David, Polly Ann, Ephraim and John, children of Phillip (1783), were living with Jesse and Malissa (1808 or 1803 and 1828).

Philip has been recorded as having been born 1802 in many records but IGI (Church of Latter Day Saints) records birth of 1783.

Philip (2) HAHN and Mary SMITH were married before 1807 in Missouri.  Mary SMITH (daughter of Daniel K. (Schmidt) SMITH and Catherine ZIMMERMAN) was born about 1790 in Lincoln, Catawba, North Carolina.  She died after 1843 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  There is some confusion about whether Mary is the daughter of  Catherine Zimmerman or Daniel's second wife, Elizabeth Hahn. Mrs.  Eaker says Catherine died ca 1790-95 and Daniel married Elizabeth  1795 or before. She lists Mary's birth date as before 7 Apr. 1810.

1810.  Philip (2) HAHN and Mary SMITH had the following children:

27                i.   Jesse HAHN, born on 21 Jan 1808; married Malissa LINCOLN, on 25 Jan 1849, Cape Girardeau Co, Missouri; married Sophia SETTLEMIRE, on 18 Jun 1829, Cape Girardeau Co, Missouri.

ii.   John (6) HAHN[19] was born on 1 Nov 1808.  He died in 1885.

iii.   Albert Alvin HAHN was born in Jan 1815.

iv.   Margetty Alice HAHN was born on 18 Oct 1818.

6.  Christina HAHN (Benedict-1) was born on 15 Jul 1785 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  She died on 17 Oct 1852 in Alexander Co., N.C..  She was buried in Pisgah Church, Alexander County, NC.

According to the census, this would be the youngest daughter of

Benedict Hahn. No positive proof.

Christina HAHN and Abram BOLICK were married about 1805.  Abram BOLICK (son of Jacob BOLICK and Maria Saloma GRIMES) was born on 19 Jul 1790 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  He died on 13 Jan 1873 in Alexander Co., N.C..  Christina HAHN and Abram BOLICK had the following children:

                             i.   Rachel BOLICK[20] was born on 3 Feb 1814.

                            ii.   Abner BOLICK[21] was born.

iii.   Agnes BOLICK[22] was born on 1 Jan 1826.  She died on 11 Jul 1903.

28              iv.   Alexander BOLICK, born on 8 Oct 1823; married Sarah MILLER; died on 13 Feb 1908.

                            v.   Anderson Abraham BOLICK[23] was born on 29 Aug 1837.  This appears to be the youngest child of Christina and Abram, born  when she was 52 years old.

7.  Jane (Jenny) HAHN (Benedict-1) was born in 1788.  She died on 9 Nov 1876.  Records show she died at age 106  Possible daughter of Benedict, not confirmed.

Jane (Jenny) HAHN and John HAGER were married on 27 Mar 1805 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  John HAGER was born on 15 Sep 1767.  He died on 16 Jul 1842.

8.  Daniel HAHN[24] (Benedict-1) was born on 10 Jul 1790 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  He died on 17 Mar 1848 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  He was buried in farm near Lutesville, MO.  Mrs. Eaker says there is no evidence Daniel b. 1790 is Benedict's

son, but he is judged so by circumstantial evidence. However, IGI lists son Daniel born 10 July 1790, so this has to be Benedict's son.

Note: There were two other daughters on 1790 Census that are unaccounted for. One could be Jane (Jenny) Hahn, b. 1770 d. 9 Nov. 1876 age 106 yr, m. 27 Mar. 1805 LC, NC John Hager, b. 15 Sep. 1767 d. 16 Jul. 1842. I cannot account for her otherwise. She was over age 26 1810 Census but young enough to have 8 or 10 children after 1805. I could not locate her on Census 1850-70. See Hager records.

Some believe that Elizabeth Hahn, b. 2 Jun. 1789 LC, NC, d. 13 Feb. 1867 Platte Co., MO; m. 16 Jul. 1808 LC, NC Charles Frederick Shell was the other one. However someone has changed her birth as 1781 to fit the missing daughter. Census and tombstone verify the 1789 date. She just does not fit here

Daniel HAHN and Susan BAKER were married about 1808 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Susan BAKER (daughter of Peter BAKER and Mary Elizabeth WISE) was born on 25 May 1792 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  She died on 4 Oct 1868 in Bollinger County, Mo..  Different records give Miss Baker's name as Susan and Susannah.

Daniel HAHN and Susan BAKER had the following children:

11                i.   Sarah  (5) HAHN, born on 6 Aug 1809, Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina; married John C. SHELL, about 1838.

31              iv.   Elizabeth  (6) HAHN, born on 7 Oct 1814, Bollinger County, Mo.; married Michael EAKER, on 5 Jul 1830; died about 1863, Bollinger County, Mo..

32               v.   David (5) HAHN, born on 24 Oct 1817, Bollinger Co. Mo; died on 14 Jan 1894, Bollinger Co. Mo.

33              vi.   Davault HAHN, born on 8 Feb 1818; married Anna SHELL, on 24 Jul 1836; married Arminta Snider STEVENS, on 12 Dec 1867, Bollingerr County, MO; died before 1880.

34             vii.   Fannie HAHN, born on 2 Nov 1820; married Henry CRADER, on 25 Jan 1840; died on 27 Mar 1846.

35            viii.   John  (8) HAHN, born on 21 Jul 1824; married Sarah Emeline BAKER, on 23 Jun 1843, Cape Girardeau, Missouri; died in 1872, Bollinger County, Mo..

Elizabeth (4) HAHN and John BARGER were married on 18 Aug 1828 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.

GRD lists marriage of Elizabeth Hahn to John Barger of Hickory, N.C.

on 15 Aug. 1828.  John BARGER was born.

10.  Catherine  (3) HAHN[25] (David (1)-2, Benedict-1) was born on 20 Apr 1804 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  She died on 20 Oct 1872 in Catawba  County, North Carolina.

Lafayette Yount, and Minta.

Catherine  (3) HAHN and Jacob YODER were married on 6 Jun 1824 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.  Jacob YODER (son of John YODER and Sarah WHITENER) died on 24 Nov 1864.  Jacob Yoder(3) inherited 167 acres of land from his father's estate on the east side of Jacob's Fork River. His wife also inherited land from her parents--a tract three miles to the north, which was called the "Old Hahn Place" for several generations by Hahn's who successively inherited it. Jacob Yoder(3) built a substantial Log House close-by the branch and good spring, about a quarter of a mile northeast from the site where Conrad Yoder's(1) house stood. This log house was lived in by the descendants of Jacob Yoder(3) until 1965. The place was known during the last 50 years as the frank Miller place. The house was torn down and a nice brick house now stands where it stood for more that 150 years. A grandson of Frank Miller showed the author how the logs of the old house had been pinned together by wooden pegs, showing how many pioneer log houses were built in the early 1800's.

Jacob Yoder(3) was a militia captain for many years, following in the footsteps of his father, John Yoder (2). Although he was a member of the Reformed Church, an historic church document written in German script shows that he, in January and July, 1800, was one of the 32 contributors to the support of Reverend John Godfrey Arndt, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church.

Catharine Hahn Yoder, wife of Jacob Yoder(3) was a remarkable woman. She was energetic and speedy in her household work, as well as in the fields. Her reputation for doing all kinds of farm work, and especially binding wheat sheaves, was known far and wide, was the talk of the community, and was handed down among her descendants for several generations. She survived her husband eight years.

A tornado destroyed the home in 1938.

Immediately after the war, he went to Missouri and went into business...married..raised a large family of unusually intelligent children, all of whom are doing well. After the death of his wife, his health, which was never good, commenced to fail rapidly and although he went from place to place in hopes of gaining strength, he continued to grow worse, and in 1908 he quietly fell asleep, the sleep that knows no waking. He was a good, quiet Christian man.

Davault HAHN and Anna SHELL were married on 24 Jul 1836.

Marriage records at the courthouse give Anna's name as Ann Spencer.

David Shell reported in the Shell history that Davault married Anna

Shell. One of the records must be in error.  Anna SHELL (daughter of John C. SHELL and Fanny HAHN) was born on 16 Jan 1819.  She died on 30 Jun 1864.  Jacob W. Hahn and Margaret Hahn did not live in the same household as Davault and Annie but lived next door, according to the 1860 census for Bollinger County, Castor Township. They may have been their children or just neighbors.  Davault HAHN and Anna SHELL had the following children:

(At least one researcher believes that Prof. George Washington Hahn, son of Christian Jr., was born in Miss. although all records say he was born in NC. Indeed, the 1850 census says he was born in Mississippi. But census takers often made errors in their work. If one looks at the Catawba County census for 1840, one will find that Christian Hahn is listed beside brothers Frederick and probably a nephew David. All lived in Upper Regiment, where many Hahns lived at that time.LHS)

"German Speaking People..." says he is buried in Hickory Cemetery but there is no Hickory Cemetery. Could be that the author meant "Oakwood Cemetery," which owned by the City of Hickory.
