the Hagemeiers
Generation 1: Adolph J. F. HAGEMEIER (b. GER 1826) m#1 Louisa BORNEMANN? (b. GER 1829); m#2 Juliana DEE (b. GER 1856)

Adolph Hagemeier, Sr.

The family of Adolph and Juliana (Dee) Hagemeier, about 1891.
In front: Paul (age ~5); behind (L to R): Emma, Juliana, Edward, Albert, Adolph, Lydia.

Adolph J. F. Hagemeier's country of origin is consistently given in U.S. and Iowa State Censuses as Germany. In the 1870 IA Census, the birthplaces of Adolph and wife #1, Louisa, are given more exactly as Lippe and Hesse, respectively. Their son Adolph Jr. was born about 1854 in Lippe, while son Charles was born in Iowa in 1857. The 1900 Census for Adolph Jr. reports his year of immigration as 1857. This agrees with a transcription by the late Donna Bales of passenger list information in "Germans to America", Glazier & Filby eds., Vol 11: Apr. 1857 - Nov. 1857, p. 64:

Ship: AUGUSTE
From: Bremen to New York
Arrived: 1 June 1857
Adolph Hagemeyer, age 30, Farmer, from Lippe, Destination: Iowa
Louise, age 27, Farmer, from Lippe, Destination: Iowa
Adolph, age 4, Child, from Lippe, Destination: Iowa
The Hagemeiers settled in Makee Township, Allamakee County. Judging from Census entries, Adolph Sr. and Louisa apparently had six children.

Here is a brief account of Adolph's death as retold by David Hagemeier :

"Adolph died in Nov of 1896 as a result of injuries from a mishap when his team of horses ran out of control on the streets of Waukon, as the story goes. His obit appeared in the Waukon Standard newpaper on November 11, 1896."
If accurate, this account puts Adolph's death shortly before 11-Nov-1896. A cemetery transcription for Adolph lists his death as "Nov. 8, 1893", which must be wrong since he was alive in the 1895 Census. As can be seen in the photo of Adolph's gravestone, the correct date was 8 Nov. 1896. Here is my reading of the stone from the picture:

ADOLPH J.F. HAGEMEIER Geboren 19 June 1826, Gestorben 8 Nov. 1896

Note: A text inscription in smaller type follows that cannot be read from the photo.

Louisa (Bornemann?) (Baudemann?) Hagemeier

In the 1860-1870 IA Censuses, Adolph's wife's name is given as Louisa. Other Hagemeier researchers have given "Bornemann" as Louisa's surname. However, on the death certificate of Adolph & Louisa's daughter Bertha Matilda (Hagemeier) Kellison's, her brother Otto gives their mother's name as Louisa "Baudemen". This is not a valid German surname, but it is possible that the known name "Baudemann" was meant but was misspelled.

Louisa's surname: Bornemann [various genealogy web sites]; Baudemen [daughter Bertha Matilda's death certificate]
Louisa's birth date: 4-Apr-1829 [Allamakee Co. IA Cemetery transcription]; 1829-1830 [1860-1870 IA Censuses]
Louisa's birth place: Hesse, Germany [1870 IA Census]
Louisa's death date: 2-May-1872 [Allamakee Co. IA Cemetery transcription]
Louisa's death place: Allamakee Co. IA [Allamakee Co. IA Cemetery transcription]
Louisa's interment: Ebenezer Cem., Allamakee Co. IA

Juliana (Dee) Hagemeier

In 1880, 54 year old Adolph is living with his second wife Julia(na), who was just 25 years old. Judging by the Census data, Adolph and Juliana had five more children. Juliana's maiden name, Dee, is revealed in the 1900 Census, when widow Juliana is listed with several of her children and with her mother, Dortha Dee.

After Adolphs's death, Juliana married another immigrant, Augustus John Herman Kuehn (b. Germany 1851). In 1920 they are living together in Waukon; in 1930, Augustus has died and Juliana is living with son Paul Hagemeier & his wife Emma in Makee Twp.

Juliana's birth date: 26-Mar-1856 [Allamakee Co. IA Cemetery transcription]; Mar-1856 [1900 IA Census]
Juliana's birth place: Germany [1880-1900 IA Censuses]
Juliana's death date: 2-Mar-1939 [Allamakee Co. IA Cemetery transcription]
Juliana's interment: Oakland Cemetery, 1920 Add'n [Allamakee Co. IA Cemetery transcription]
