"Rhoda Lewis was born May 1, 1822, at Gainesville, N. Y. where she grew to womanhood.
"In 1845 she was united in marriage to Samuel S. Dewey, of that place, and soon after, with her husband started for the then "far west" reaching Lake County, Illinois, in the fall of 1845, buying a little home in the town of Warren where the greater part of her life was spent.
"Sickness and misfortune and the hardships of pioneer life were bravely borne by her. Domestic in her tastes, to her family and home she gave loving care. A firm believer in immortality and the reunion with loved ones after this life, but patiently awaited the summons saying 'Thy will be done.'
"Her husband's death occurred in 1880, and she remained in the old home until 1887, when she went to live with her sons in Nebraska, and from the home of her youngest son on February 25, 1898, she passed away to the higher life.
"Her remains were placed beside her husband in Warren Cemetery, and for her it is:
"Only a step in the darkness/ Guided by infinite love
Passing the vale that divideth/
Earth from the glory above
Losing the care and the sorrow,/ Losing the turmoil and strife
Gaining a peace never parting,/ Won in a battle of life."
