The Boyd Families of Illinois

Visitors:

1. Wm. Boyd b. circa 1747 m. in Ireland, Margaret Lyons b. 1754. They lived in Ireland for a while, then came to America with some of their children, arriving at Charleston, South Carolina. Moved to the Abbeville District, then to Laurens District, and finally after some time, 2 daughters and 3 sons came to Illinois about 1821-1825. They were Samuel, Wm., Jane and Margaret.

2. Samuel Boyd b. Ireland 10/16/1777 m. after emigrating to America, (1)Nancy Vernor in South Carolina b. unknown d. 1832. Came to Illinois about 1825 and located in section 17, Twp 4 R 5, where he lived until his decease. Married (2)Margaret Skelly b. Chester district, South Carolina 5/14/1802. (Daughter of Wm. Skelly b. South Carolina d. 1823 and wife Jane Blackstock d. Illinois 7/12/1849. She was a native of South Carolina).

3. Samuel Lyons Boyd b. 9/6/1817 South Carolina d. 3/5/1877 Illinois m. (1) 8/13/1840 Jane Gibson b. 3/31/1823 South Carolina d. 6/27/1870. Both buried in Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta, Illinois. m. (2) 6/15/1871, Jane's sister, Mary E. Gibson b. 6/28/1833 d. 1/10/1913. They had a son b. and d. 1872 buried in Caledonia Cemetery. (Jane and Mary were daughters of Robert and Mary Gibson). (Mary E.Gibson Boyd m. (2) 3/22/1881 in Randolph County, Ill., John Bickett b. 3/28/1836 Ayrshire, Scotland, d. 3/12/1900. This was his third wife. Mary E. is buried in Caledonia Cemetery beside her infant son, Boyd).

4. Mary Boyd b. 8/17/1841 d. 1/19/1917 buried at Salina, Kansas, m. 11/27/1860 James B. Aitken b. 9/11/1837 d. 9/11/1877 buried in Caledonia Cemetery, Sparta, Illinois. When they m. they lived on a farm in Kansas.

4. Robert Boyd b. 11/7/1843. In December 1863, when the Civil War was raging, he enlisted in Co. K 5^th Illinois Cavalry, Union Army, and he joined his regiment at Vicksburg, fought under General Custer at the Yazoo River, then was stationed at Vicksburg until the following summer. Then with his regiment went to Tennessee, and engaged in fighting General Forrest, and routing him, went to Memphis, then into Texas where they were detailed to skirmish. He received his honorable discharge in the fall of 1865 and during his service was never wounded or taken prisoner. He d. 1/5/1927 Sparta, lIlinois m. after discharge from service 2/8/1866 Marion Bickett B. Randolph County, Illinois 9/4/1845 d. 11/21/1890 Sparta, Illinois. Both buried Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta (she was a daughter of John Bickett). He a member of the U. P. church and a Grand Army of the Republic with his membership in the Post at Coulterville, Illinois. Also a member of the Prohibition Party.

He was sentenced 10/14/1918 when only 15 years old. The 2 boys who assisted in the murder escaped punishment. They had beaten and robbed Welshans with a gas pipe. While serving sentence, he prevented the escape of 2 prisoners on 8/9/1925. For this and in consideration of his good conduct, Gov. Len Small commuted his sentence with the understanding that he leave the state for 1 year. He left 11/21/1925 for Fargo, N. D. He married Marie Lambert.

When Robert Weir was just a boy, his parents came to America in 1795 to South Carolina with 2 children James and William, leaving Robert with his grandparents in Ireland, County Tyrone.

When Robert was 19 years old his grandparents had died. He then came to Abbeville County, S. C. to his parents.

Robert m. in S. C. Jane Boyd. In 1821 Robert and Jane came with a company (Weirs, Boyds, Wilsons and others), from Abbeville County, S. C. to southern Ill. in wagons.

They divided into 2 groups, one wanted to travel on, on Sabbath Day, and the other wanted to rest on Sabbath Day, and Robert was in the latter group. They would often catch up to the group that traveled on, on Sabbath Day. It took many weeks to travel, as bridges were few.

Robert Weir settled in Lively Prairie, in Randolph County, northeast of Sparta. Only three houses were in that area at that time, and he bought land from the government at 25 cents per acre.

They lived on a farm near Shuline, Ill. He practice veterinary medicine. He enjoyed attending County Fairs. He died at home of his daughter, Mrs. Riley Blair, 11/2/1938. WEIR

Dr. James Wallace Weir (in the direct line), of Sparta, Illinois, made these concise statements of what he knew of the early history of the Weir family on March 3, 1931:

"About 37 years ago, Jane Weir Latham of Alabama wrote a history of the Weir family from Scotland, Ireland, South Carolina and Illinois, and she told me of it."

"I make these statements now as they were told me by my grandfather, Robert Weir."

"Robert Weir was born in County Tyrone(note; Dr. Weir said Co. Antrim. This was corrected by author), Ireland in 1789. While just a boy, his parents came to South Carolina with their 2 children James and William, leaving Robert with his grandparents in Ireland. When Robert was 19 years old, his grandparents had died. He came to Abbeville District, South Carolina to his

parents. Here Robert married on 1812 Jane Boyd born County Tyrone, Ireland, 1792."

Robert and Jane came with a great company (Weirs, Boyds, Wilsons and many others), from Abbeville District, South Carolina in 1821 to south Illinois in wagons coming in two groups. One group traveled every day, but the group in which Robert Weir was, rested on Sabbath Day and during the week would over take the other group.

It took many weeks of travel, bridges were few, so they waded streams, secured provisions when they could and finally arrived in Randolph County, Illinois. Robert Weir settled in the western part of the county in Lively Prairie, northeast of Sparta, there being only three houses near at the time. He bought land from the government from .12 1/2 cents to .25 cents per acre.

As the children grew and married they also, for the most part, bought land and lived on adjoining, or near by farms, except Peggy who married John Holliday and lived 3 miles southeast of Coulterville, Illinois.

Here also many grandchildren grew up. Some going far distant places to live and many have gone to their heavenly home."
