• Biography*: John Bennett Malone was a shoe maker in LaGrange, GA, as a young man. He walked from LaGrange to Randolph County once a month to see his mother, and on one of his trips, he met his future wife, Mahulda Hunter, in Almond, AL. The couple was married in 1876. John moved near his mother, and opened a store and ferry on the Tallapossa River in 1878, and this was the origin of Malone, AL, which became a town around 1890, when Nixon Lucas came from North Carolina and put up a turpentine still in Malone. Eventually there was a three teacher school, two churches, three doctors, and about 8 places of business, including a cotton gin, a blacksmith's shop, and several saw mills. A railroad and depot were completed in 1907, when the Atlanta, Birmingham, and Coast Railroad was extended from Manchester, GA, to Birmingham, AL, following the Tallapoosa River for 12 or 15 miles and stopping in Malone. In 1908, Malone bridge was built about half a mile upstream from the ferry, and the ferry was soon abandoned. As the logging industry declined, the town began to disappear, and only one small store remains. John was a genial, well met person, who loved hunting and fishing, and was a skillful riverman. He appeared much younger than his actual age. His ferry was the place for many Fourth of July picnics, fish fries, and other gaities for the young people -- boating, fishing, and swimming, during the "Gay Nineties."
