James Alford Bailey

Biography*: From Lew Griffin, March 2002:
I'm beginning to think the J A and the M E in County Line Cemetery are James Alford and Mary Elizabeth. They were living in the Mellow Valley area at least by the time of the 1880 census, if not earlier. Their Post Office in 1880 was Almond, which is down Highway 77 a bit, and in adjacent Randolph County. Mellow Valley is a little closer to Almond than to Lineville, which is north of Mellow Valley, and which was their Post Office in 1870. So it could be they were actually in Mellow Valley in 1870, just assigned to a different Post Office.
The County Line Cemetery, where the "J A" and "M E" Bailey are buried, is near Mellow Valley, which is in SE Clay County, near the Randolph County line. Listed in their plot are W. J. Bailey (1857 - 1928), H. E. Bailey (1860 - 1894, wife of W. J.), Lilla Bailey (1861 - 1926, wife of W. J.), and W. A. Bailey (1864 - 1917) I think the W. J. is William Jefferson Bailey, son of George W. Bailey and Martha E. There were also some Rascos in this cemetery. Don't know who the W. A. Bailey is.
George W. Bailey (Dec 1833 - 1910), and his wife Martha E. (1837 - 1917) were in County Line Cemetery, not far from J A and M E. George W. and Martha were in Mellow Valley in 1870 and 1880, and had a P. O. of Daviston, Tallapoosa County, in 1860. Daviston is not far from Mellow Valley, either, just a little to the south, across the Tallapoosa County line. I think this George W. is a close relative of James Alford, probably his younger brother. He was born in GA, and
was about 18 months younger than James A. And in the 1880 census, George's father was born in VA and his mother in NC. This is the same as James Alford's 1880 census, father VA, mother NC.
There was a George W. F. Bailey who married Martha A. Hammack, 25 Jun 1850, in Chambers County, AL. Foster Bailey was the witness. This was awfully early to have been the marriage of the George W. born in 1834, so I don't think this is the correct George and Martha. Could be.
Living next door to John Griffin (Mary Elizabeth's father) in 1850 was a Foster Bailey, born about 1804 or 1805 in SC. I suspect he is some relation to James Alford as well, possibly his uncle. Among Foster's children was a WHITSON J. Bailey (born 1841 - 1842 in GA). So the Whitson line must be of some connection to James Alford. Foster was living near Childersburg, Talladega County, in 1860.
