Notes for ORVILLE FRANCIS BARRON:

"The Lead Belt News", Friday, March 5, 1945 - Flat River Soldier Awarded The Silver Star In Italy with the Fifth Army in Italy, Private Orville F. Barron of Flat River, MO  recently was awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action in  Italy. He served with the Fifth Army in Company "G" 350th Battle Mountain  Regiment, 88th Blue Devil Division.  During an attack on the enemy strongly entrenched on a hill, his assault group was met with deadly hail of enemy fire.  Realizing the danger of the situation, he volunteered to  go forward to clear the enemy.  Despite the intense enemy fire he reached a point where he directed his automatic rifle fire on the enemy with devastating effect, wounding a  number of enemy soldiers. When he ran out of ammunition he crawled  forward to within striking distance of the enemy emplacement where he  boldly stood up in full view of the enemy and threw two grenades,  silencing the opposing gunners.  His daring action and superb courage is in keeping with the highest  traditions of the armed forces, concluded the citation.
