McLester was born circa 1700.
The first McLester known to us was Joseph McLester who came to
America from Scotland in about 1730. His background cannot be ascertained.
His son Joseph McLester (an only child insofar as we know) was born at about the time of immigration, but whether he was born in Scotland or America is unknown. The immigrant Joseph settled on the PeeDee River in Stanly County North Carolina. The son became a hatter by trade. He commanded a militia company under Col Hines throughout the Revolution. It is probable that the name was spelled McAlester at that time. This second Joseph had a large family. We know of descendents of four of the eight children. As told to Robert McLester by his father, James A. McLester, May 1st,1888.
Rebecca McLester, daughter of Joseph, married Valentine Van Hoose. Their great grandson, James Alexander Van Hoose, married back into the family. There were two other daughters of whom we have no record.
The oldest son, Daniel, settled in North Carolina and had a large family, but we have no record of them until now!
John McLester, second son of Joseph, was the ancestor of a number of McLester relatives living in South Georgia. He was the great great grandfather of Dr W S Littlejohn of Birmingham Alabama
Joseph McLester, III, the third son of Joseph, was the ancestor of some connections formerly from Talladega Alabama. Contact has been made with them but no data yet acquired from Berckley A and Margaret Storey of Lexington Kentucky, great great grandchildren of this Joseph.
William McLester, the fourth son, never married.
James McLester, fifth son of Joseph and grandson of the immigrant Joseph, was ancestor of the McLester family detailed here. He married Nancy Tompkins (or possible Campbell) and emigrated from Montgomery County North Carolina to Lauderdale City Alabama in 1820 or 1821 where he died a few months later. Nancy Tompkins McLester was born July 7, 1776, died Feb 16, 1844, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetary in Tuscaloosa
in 1730.

3. Daniel3 McLester, Sr (Joseph2, Joseph1) was buried at Crowell-McLester Cemetery. He was born on 8 Jan 1763. He and Mary Unknown were married after 1783. He died on 24 Sep 1836 at age 73.

He served in the Confederate Army - *Company H 14 th Regiment NC Troops (page 463) McLester Jeremiah D(aniel) 3rd Lieutenant *Resided in Stanly Co and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Stanly Co at age 23., May 5, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant on April 27, 1862. Elected 3rd Lieutenant to rank from October 3, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the head and captured at or near Gettysburg, PA July 2-4 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE until transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio, July 18, 1863. Confined at Johnson's Island until paroled on March 14, 1865 and transferred to Cox's Wharf, James River VA where he was received March 22, 1865 for exchange. *He recovered from his wounds and was still in good health as late as 1910 (reported by a granddaughter, Mrs Eli Shoe) *He married after the war to miss Polly Morton of Albemarle and brought his wife to Cabarrus Co where he and at least one known brother, Silas, settled in Concord's Forest Hill Section. *Daniel died in Cabarrus Co sometime after 1910 and is buried at Cold Water Baptist Church on South Union Street Extension (Monroe Rd) His CSA tombstone has no dates of birth or death. His wife is buried at his side, which is also near his brother, Silas.
