41Hiram21 Kennedy (David20, Alexander19, John18, Alexander17, Alexander16, Alexander15, Thomas14, Gilbert13, Gilbert12, David11, John10, Gilbert9, James8, Gilbert7, John6, Gilbert5de Carrick, Gilbert4, Roland3, Nicol,2, Duncan1) was born on 22 Oct 1792 Moore Co., NC; Martha's twin brother.261 He married Mary Spinks on 28 Jan 1813 Moore Co., NC.262 He died on 20 Aug 1862 Lauderdale Co., AL, at age 69; estate worth $25,000. Sold at residence.263,264

"He was born October 22, 1792 in Moore County, North Carolina (the earliest land grant on record to his grandfather Alexander Kennedy in Moore County was in 1793 but the deeds of Moore County have been burned and as Alexander Kennedy was not living in Orange County in 1770 it is thought he had moved over Deep River to the Moore County side) and he married January 28, 1813, Mary Spinks born January 20, 1793; the Spinks family lived just over the county line in Randolph County not far from Mechanic's Hill where the Kennedy's lived. They had eleven children, five of whom I believe were born in Moore County; the eldest Asa, died in 1817, so when they moved to Lauderdale County, Alabama about 1824 they had four children. He was one of the first to buy land in Lauderdale County; the Government put land here on sale March 5, 1818 and he bought June 19 of that year, the earliest grants being signed by the President. Eventually he owned over two thousand acres in this county near the village of Green Hill about fifteen miles out from Florence on the Military Road--now Jackson Highway; the home place was east of the highway before you get to Green Hill, other land was west of the home place on Shoal Creek at a community called Cowpens. The home stood until about 1944 but as none of the family had lived in it since 1875 it had greatly deteriorated; but originally it was a fine house of considerable size. The woodwork--mantels, door and window frames and wainscoating in the principal rooms were all hand carved. I have some of the furniture that was in the house and it is of high order. There is still evidence of a gun factory north-east of where the home stood-- a pile of brick, but gun-making was no longer so important.
The family cemetery is south (and across a dirt road) from where the home stood; in 1957 a new fence has been put around it. In it Hiram and his wife Mary were buried; he died August 20, 1862 and she died January 22, 1875. After his death she continued to live on the Kennedy Plantation although toward the end of her life she lived with he youngest child, my Grandmother Brookes on the Brookes Plantation; Hiram Kennedy's Will was settled by my Grandfather Brookes. Although my mother was only six years old when she died she remembered seeing her grandmother reading her Bible by candlelight.
I think of Hiram and Mary Spinks Kennedy as exceedingly fine and gentle people, living the good life and providing well for their large family. When they settled far from other like families they lacked social contacts readily at hand but they maintained their standards of culture and education. There was no ostentation, unless sending to London for the wedding trousseau of a granddaughter they raised was that; and life was so pleasant, a grandson, John Robie Kennedy, when he was married in Tuscaloosa brought his bride to visit his widowed grandmother on their honeymoon.265 "Matthew, Wilson and Hiram Kennedy took the censes of the county in 1850. They were required to list a real estate evaluation for each property owner. Less than $1,000 was the value of the majority of most peoples real estate. The enumerators were also required to make a list of all persons who had died in the county ending 1 June 1850. Only the list kept by Hiram Kennedy was available."266

Children of "Lighthorse" Henry21 Lee and Ann Hill Carter were as follows: 46Judith21 Smith (Baldwin20, Philip19, Mary18Warner, Augustine17, Augustine16, Elizabeth15Southerton, Augustine14, Elizabeth13(Stewart) Steward, James12Stewart, Janet11Kennedy, John10, Gilbert9, James8, Gilbert7, John6, Gilbert5de Carrick, Gilbert4, Roland3, Nicol,2, Duncan1) (letter from Certified Genealogist in Virginia, states that Lucy, relict of B.M. Smith was appointed guardian of Judith) was born circa 1754 Lancaster, VA; Ancestral File has her as daughter of Baldwin Mathews Smith & Ann Lee. Evidently Smith had 3 wives, Frances Burgess. Ann Lee & a Lucy (Smith) who remarried after his death.353 She married John Leland Jr., son of Rev. Jno (John) Leland and Elizabeth (Elisabeth) Lombard, on 19 Oct 1775 Lancaster, VA.354,355 She was buried in 1789;  under the altar of the church at Wicomico, according to Eliza (Stevens) Adams, daughter of Judith (Leland) Stevens. Cousin "Lide" was the member of the family most interested in family history. J.A.C. Leland II, pg. 18.356

In a letter from Certified Genealogist, Mrs. James R. Lindsay, dtd 11 Sept 1974, to Julia Dubois Leland Foster, states as follows: I have traced the lineage of Judith Smith, wife of John Leland of the sixth generation and find that she is descended through the Smiths of "Purton" from Colonel George Reade. I consider this one of the most distinguished lines in Virginia. George Reade married Elizabeth Martiau, daughter of Nicolas Martiau. Nicolas Martiau is also Colonial Dames eligibility. A daughter of George Reade married Colonel Augustin Warner, a member of the council. You have any number of qualifier through this line, but I hope you will permit me to use Colonel George Reade. He has Magna Charta and Royal ancestry in 1754.357 There has been considerable confusion and difference of opinion between different members of the family as to the Lee connection. Cousin Lide Adams says, "Judith Smith had one sister, Ailsie Smith, who married Baldwin Mathews. Their mother was Ann Lee, a sister to the Lucy Lee who was the second wife of John Leland and the (mother of the) Uncle Charles of our grandfather, but they were, in association, brothers."
(She refers to her grandfather Baldwin M. Leland and his half uncle, Charles Leland.) According to this, Lucy Lee's maiden name was Lee -- that is, Thomas Lee married Lucy Lee. J.A.C.Leland, pg 17.358

Children of Judith21 Smith and John Leland Jr. were as follows:
