The Serbinoffs of the Don, Russia
alex serbinoff
"It was a serene morning, clear and calm. A rain had fallen the night before, freshening the air. An ocean of ripening wheat was slightly rippling behind rows of sweet clovers with greenish-yellow flowers, growing high by the roadside. A group of men in trench coats, armed with shotguns hid quietly in a ditch at the outskirts of a large village. Their dirty faces were alert, bearing signs of a sleepless, rainy night. It was outpost number three."

So began Alexander Serbinoff's recollection of his first battle, fighting as a First Lieutenant of the Composite Cossack Regiment of the Don, in 1918, during the Russian Revolution. Later he rose to the rank of Captain, and later still, he was fleeing Russia, and beginning a new life in Canada.
