Diana Christina

Pilgert

10/23/1806

12/23/1901

Mertztown: Mrs. Diana Pilgert, who lives here with her son Henry, is the oldest person in this vicinity. She is nearly 92 years old and a remarkable woman. She is in excellent health, says she was never sick and never took any medicine. She is so well preserved and vigorous that sometimes she leaves home in the morning on foot to visit friends, walks 3 to 4 miles and returns in the evening apparently without fatigue. Her hearing is unimpaired and her eyesight so good that she reads books and newspapers without spectacles. She was frequently urged to sit for her picture but always refused until now, when she allowed George S. Pilgert, the Eagle correspondent here, to take her photograph, from which the engraving was made that illustrates this biographical sketch. Mrs. Pilgert (nee Fegley was born in Longswamp Berks Co, Oct 23, 1806 and was baptized in December of the same year by Rev. Geisenheimer. The sponsors were Henry Gaumer and Miss Susana Miller, of the Longswamp Church. She is now a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church Mertztown and has been residing with her son Henry in this town since 1891. Her parents were Henry and Catharine Fegley (nee Gaumer). Her parents and the following brothers and sisters have died: George and Henry Fegeley, Mrs. Lydia Gordon, Mrs. Julia Lauer. The subject of this sketch was married to George Pilgert, April 10, 1828, by Rev. Conrad Miller. Mr. Pilgert was a tailor, died of paralysis, Dec. 10, 1875. Eleven children were born to them, of whom 6 survive, as follows: Reuben, Longswamp; Henry, Mertztown; Willoughby, near Henningsville; Isaac, Phillipsburg, N.J.; Mrs. Rebecca Jacobs, Schlossberg; Mrs. Isabella Bidding, Macungie. Following are deceased: George M., James and Jeremiah Pilgert and Mrs. Judith Shirey. There are 36 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.
