  • A rememberance from Elsie Gibson - "My Great Grandfather, Alfred B. Gibson and Emily Ann Gibson were brother and sister. Newel and Emily were both born in Bangor, New York. They had three children, Charles Lee, Roland Gibson Lee, and Flora Lee Watts. According to the 1880 Census of Bangor, NY, Newel and Emily's son Charles,was age 5, attending school, born in Mass, and his parents born in NY. The 1900 Census for Santa Clara, NY has Newel, Emily, Roland, and Flora. Roland and Flora were born in NY. In Sept. 1900, Charles was living in Malone, NY near the fairgrounds according to The Malone Farmer, Sept. 19, 1900.
    Newel and Emily are in the North Bangor Cemetery. Their stone is in front of Alfred and Flora Gibson's stone.
    Newel was in the 60th Regt, NY Infantry, Company E and transferred into the 137th NYVols. He appeared on report for Nov. 24, 1863 because he took a Rebel Flag. "

    Obituary of Newell F. Lee

    Saturday, Feb. 9, 1918

    Death of N. F. Lee

    Newell F. Lee, an aged and prominent
    citizen of Santa Clara, died at his home
    in that village last Saturday after a period
    of ill health. Mr. Lee had resided in the
    town of Santa Clara for many years and
    for several terms represented the town as
    supervisor and held various other town
    offices at different times and at the time
    of his death, was one of the justices of
    the peace. He was a member of the
    Masonic Lodge at North Bangor, where
    he at one time resided. He was well
    known and had many friends in this
    section of the county. His funeral was
    held at Santa Clara on Wednesday, Rev.
    Anderson of Saranac Lake and Rev. N. A.
    Darling of this village officiating. Several
    from here attended the funeral.


    Newell was a local politition in Franklin County, New York.
