Grammy was a thin lady, nearly frail. A memory I have of her was at
90 East Street, washing dishes at a porcelain sink which was a
single, not a double, and boiling water on a gas stove to pour over
the washed dishes to rinse them. I'm sure Jo Anne and I were asked
to do the dishes, but that had been preceded by a
great macaroni and cheese
dinner
When we
were living in Washington state in the 1960s, when dad went to Viet
Nam for the first time in 1965,she and her sister, Aunt Hazel, came
to visit by train, all the way from Vermont, and apparently in
getting around in the station when they arrived, they both fell down
an escalator. (Each survived to tell the tale. Hazel was the elder
of the two and my impression at the time was that she was in charge.
When I saw them upon arrival, they both had on heavy, dark overcoats
and hats) My mother remembered that her Aunt Hazel purchased
second hand toques for them as Christmas gifts,
which were a tight fitting kind of
cap/hat popular in the 1920s..
