Alfred first made his living as a beerhouse keeper. In 31 Dec 1868, he married Henrietta Saywell. They had 9 children. He went into the more prosperous trade of hand made lace. This provided a good living and they had two or three maids. He became a partner in a lace factory. He had a very strict disposition, but worked well with all the employees, which included his three sons.

Alfred became involved in the Lace making businesses so let's take a look at that first click here

With the rise of the machine age, it was no longer profitable to make lace by hand and so the trade declined. Alfred could no longer afford such a high standard of living. His sons had to find work elsewhere. Percy went to France, Bud, and Harold went to Canada.

Let’s take a look at this very corner as it looked in 1997

Corner of Loughborough & Melton Roads West Bridgford as it looked 1997
West Bridgford is and was a very well-off suburb of the city with very large houses.
Today its reputation stands much the same but most of the large houses are flats or offices.
Still one of the better areas to live.
