COMMENTS:
Who was the
father of William R. Watkins (1832-1891)? It
COULD have been Elias Watkins (ca.1811-p.1880), based on census
records. Note that Elias in 1840 had a male child born at
the right time (1832). Note that Elias is totally
unfindable (to me) in 1850 census, whereas a William (18, i.e., born
1832) is still in Pickens/SC living with a family named Morris
Miller. This surely must be the same William Watkins shown above
in 1860-70-80 USCensuses. Note that in 1860 both William (1832)
and Elias (1811) are enumerated in the same county 4 pages apart in
Sharp Mountain/ Pickens/ Georgia! In other words, they both
came from Pickens/SC and both moved to Pickens/GA prior to 1860
USCensus!
In the Union
Army enlistment info, William gave his age
as 38 on enlistment 1864, meaning a birthdate of 1826 vs. 1832.
That may have been a recording error, or he may have given a wrong
age. He also gave his birthplace as Rabun/Georgia.
That may be a significant fact that links him to his correct
lineage. What Watkins lived in Rabun/Georgia in
1830/1840? Thomas Watkins (1770-80), the stated father of
Elias Watkins (1811).
Bearing in mind
that we cannot locate Elias in 1830 USCensus (at age
19), he
clearly could have been one of the males aged 15-20 or 20-30 (4th &
5th figures from the left in the census record above) in Thomas
Watkins' 1830 Rabun/GA household. This Thomas was aged
50-60 in 1830 (birthdate 1770-80). Thomas was named as a son in
the 1827 will of Joseph Watkins, Sr. of Pendleton/South
Carolina. This would also seem to be the same Thomas shown in
1840 below, age 60-70 (birthdate 1770-80).

Based on these
records, it appears convincing that
William R. Watkins (1832-1891) was the son of Elias Watkins
(ca.1811-p.1880), who is stated to be the son of Thomas Watkins
(ca.1770-80 --p.1840), who was named as a son in the will of Joseph
Watkins, Sr. (d.ca.1829).
The matching
Y-DNA results (26 of 26 loci) of other claimed lineage
back
thru Thomas Watkins (ca.1770-1849) & Henry Watkins, Sr.
(ca.1777-p.1870), stated to be the Thomas & Henry named
in the will of Joseph Watkins, Sr. (d.ca.1829), lead to the conclusion
that the Most Recent Common Ancestor is Joseph Watkins, Sr., who
died ca.1829 in South Carolina.
