bullet August BREITKREUTZ(1139) was born on 6 Feb 1799 in Zerpenschleuse, Germany. He died on 6 Jul 1872 in Zerpenschleuse, Germany. BREITKREUTZ

The first known ancestor (as told down through the years) fled from Salzburg, Austria about the time of the 30 years war which was from 1618 to 1648. This was the time when there was fighting between the Protestants and Catholics. This ancestor was Lutherand and had to flee for his life, leaving all possessions behind. Where he settled is unknown but descendants here in America with the name Breitkreutz, can be traced back to Germany, Poland, German Settlements in Russia, and even to Scandinavian countries. Most spelled their name the same, in others there is a slight variation, Breitkreuz or Breitkreitz. One man stated that their name had been spelled Breitkreuz in the old country but was changed either by the immigration people or it was changed when his father took his first job to Breitkreitz.

I (Dorothy Breitkreutz Reed) corresponded with one Breitkreutz Family living in Minn., whose ancestors came from the same area of Germany, Province of Brandenburg) that ours did and the older generation seems to be about the same age as my grandfather so they could have been cousins. No positive links can be made as none of us can go back any earlier than the early 1800's.

another Breitkreutz that I corresponded with ( a Doctor in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) stated that his family came from Poland. Our ancestor lived very close to the Polish border so some of the family could have easily lived in Poland.

Johann ferdinand Breitkreutz is the ancestor of the poeple in this family history. He had 6 brothers and 1 sister. Two brothers and the sister died when they were small. The names of the other brothers were: August, Ferdinand, Julius, and Herman.

Since writing the original record, I received some information from relatives in Germany concerning the parents of Johann. they are now included within the history.

Secondary Notes: from Rene' E. Breitkreutz

I received this family history from my Aunt Dorothy in late March or early April, 1994. It has been a fascinating journey to record the information onto my computer. With the information networks available these days, I am in hopes of extending the family further back, and to fill in blanks that I can. I am aware, through the computer network COMPUSERVE, that a relative in Washington is looking for information on the Breitkreutz family history, and his family notes are not completely documented herein. In a stroke of luck, or poor planning, I was looking at immigration lists in the local library and came across a Julian Breitkreutz, who at the age of 29 arrived in New York via Hamburg aboard the ship Triton on 18 July 1853. (I wonder, could this be Julius?) His occupation was listed as "smith", and Aunt Dorothy indicates he (Julius) was a wagon maker.

Children were: August BREITKREUTZ, Ferdinand BREITKREUTZ, Herman BREITKREUTZ, Julius BREITKREUTZ, Johann Ferdinand BREITKREUTZ.

He would stay up until the wee hours of the morning just winding a coil or fixing other intricate parts that went into the building of his radios. In 1901 she and her mother and Ernst and Richard moved to Western Kansas where they each homesteaded a quarter section of land. later Martha and Ernst traded sections andshe sold hers. She went to California to find work -- her sisters Anna and Elise were either already there or the three of them went out together-- this is not known for sure. As far as is known, she worked for a dentist. We never knew much about her life but her nieces and nephews adored going to meet her train when she came out on vacations. bullet Richard Julius BREITKREUTZ was born on 27 Jun 1882 in Neu Cuestrinchen, Germany. (1244) He appeared on the census on 10 May 1910 in Whitewoman Twp, Wichita Co, Ks.(1245) He died on 28 Jun 1961 in Garden City, Finney co, Ks. Richard and his brother Ernst were twins but certainly not identical. Richard was more heavy set and also the more jolly of the two. He liked to tease, and Ernst was much more serious and mechanically minded. The boys were 7 years old when their father died so don't remember much about him. They used to go to the bakery for bread for their mother and one time were given a sweet toll of some kind to take home. On the way home, Ernst convinced his twin that the roll would spoil before they got home so they ate it. Needless to say, their mother was very angry and grabbed one of them to spank (Richard was the one she grabbed first) and Ernst ran away. The two boys and their mother and sister Martha came to America in 1894 and lived in Nebraska until 1901 at which time they came to Western Kansas and homesteaded some land.

Notes from Rene' Breitkreutz, Grandniece. I don't ever remember having a conversation with my Uncle Richard, though I sure I spoke to him on several occassions. I remember the wheat fields in Kansas, and I remember playin with his grandchildren in the yard beside his home. One time my brother and I hooked a sheet to a pole and sailed down the road in a wagon, and when we turned to go back the sky was dark and stormy. Going away from the storm with the wind at our backs, we didn't realize the weather was getting bad. I think we got in trouble....the kind where you get hugged first and scolded second. Uncle Richard was the first person I knew who died, and I was at his funeral.... I remember Mom being concerned that it would frighten my brother and I to see our uncle in the coffin. I did see him though. I don't remember the service or the burial, but I know that we have a photo of it, and I'm going to add that to the materials Aunt Dorothy gave to me, along with a couple of other pictures I have found of Uncle Richard and his wife. Parents: Johann Ferdinand BREITKREUTZ and Wilhelmine Caroline MATTHES.
