Roger Keen TODD (Private).

John Cornelius TOLAND⁽⁸³⁷⁴⁾ was born about 1750 in Londonderry or County Donegal, Ireland.⁽⁴⁷⁵⁵⁾ He died on 11 Aug 1835.⁽⁴⁷⁵⁵⁾ Citing a pension settlement of March 30, 1836. He was buried on 14 Aug 1835 in Columbia Street Cemetery, Springfield, Oh.⁽⁴⁷⁵⁵⁾ Springfield, Ohio "Pioneer Newspsper", August 14, 1835, which reports burial the previous day. He came to the New World as a British soldier, deserted, and fought with General Anthony Wayne with the Pennsylvania Forces. Following the war, he lived in Virginia, then in Jefferson County, Ohio; and came west to Springfield, Ohio with his daughter Sarah and her husband John Babb. He was buried in Springfield in 1835.

Here's what I know: the Cornelius Toland (1752-1835) who came over from County Derry, North Ireland, with the British Navy (shanghaied, I assume, as he switched sides upon arriving and fought against them!) in Feb 1776. He fought as a Private til April 1777.

He had his first family with an Irish wife, Rosana, in Virginia, (mother of his first child, David, 1793) and then moved to Belmont County, Ohio sometime after 1808. Late in life, he moved in to Stark County, OH in 1833, to live near his son and son-in-law.

1820 Census shows he was then married to Catherine Duffy, who was at the time 60 (b. 1760) who is listed as having "2 sons, 17 & 14, at home) She is shown elsewhere as mother to the kids listed in the following paragraph, plus Hugh, Michael, and Nancy. (It is unclear how many were actually born to his first wife, Rosana.)

I know he was married again after her to a Joanne Coleman, who also died before him.

He is buried in the little Columbia St. cemetery in Springfield, OH, and his was the first military funeral ever conducted in that county. There is a DAR plaque on his grave.

At his death in 1835, docs show he had a pension from government of $8/mo (applied for in 1818). That year his many kids were gathered to hear the will read (oldest son David, [1793-1853] was executor of the estate). Present were: David, Nancy, Jeremiah, Cornelius Jr. (b 1808, Virginia), Sarah (Toland) & John Babb, Morgan, Owen, Neil, Cornelius (error, or a second Cornelius Jr....I don't know-2 diff moms?), Catherine (Toland) and John L. Mouder.

Children were: Jeremiah TOLLAND.

He appeared on the census on 31 Jul 1850 in Springfield Twp, Clark Co, Oh.⁽⁸³⁷⁶⁾ He appeared on the census on 3 Jun 1870 in Springfield, Clark Co, Oh.⁽⁸³⁷⁷⁾ Occupation: Corn Laborer He appeared on the census on 15 Jun 1880 in Springfield, Clark Co, Oh.⁽⁸³⁷⁸⁾ Age given as 27! Parents: Jeremiah TOLLAND and Mary Poly JONES.

James TOLLAND⁽⁸³⁸²⁾ appeared on the census on 31 Jul 1850 in Springfield Twp, Clark Co, Oh.⁽⁸³⁸³⁾ He appeared on the census on 3 Jun 1870 in Springfield, Clark Co, Oh.⁽⁸³⁸⁴⁾ Occupation: Corn laborer He appeared on the census on 15 Jun 1880 in Springfield, Clark Co, Oh.⁽⁸³⁸⁵⁾ Age given as 40!. Could be the same person?
