At Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church by Rev John Frederick Ernst She died on 4 Mar 1884. Buried with the Hummels In the Ingomar papers we read...."Here and there the ardent, conscientious Methodists established churches, but the old time Lutherans and Reformed people looked upon them with distrust on account of the rigid discipline advocated and carried out by that denomination. I could tell you of a well known consistent Christian lady, who died only a few years ago, who walked from Hummelstown 5 miles up into the Hanovers to attend meetings of the good old Methodists of the olden time. And Mary Leebrick died as she had lived--a sincere Christian, after reaching four score years....One summer afternoon, Rev. Winebrenner walked across the Square from Mother Leebrick's residence, and stood on the bed of the old pump in Centre Square. The public fountain was removed and the well filled up many years ago. On the four corners of the Square stood groups of people staring at the tall man with the white cravat and black frock coat with an opened humn book in his hadn. He gave out the hymn: 'There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel's veins, And sinners plunged beneath the flood, loose all their guilty stains!'. The hymn was lead by Miss Mary Leebrick and sister..... Parents: John Phillip LEEBRICK and Mary Gertrude CASSEL.

bullet Mary Elizabeth LEEBRICK(1199) was born in 1752 in Butzbach, Hesse, Germany.(5585) Gorten research lists a Christiane Maria Liebrich born to this family in 1752. He lists her death date as 1762 in Butzbach, which would be inconsistent with the family having moved to America in 1754. More work is needed to clarify these facts. Philadelphia April 19, 1811. Then personally appeared Abraham Stein and Frederick Beates the Witnesses to the foregoing Will and on their solemn oaths according to the Law did Depose and say that they did see and hear Mary Newman Testatrix sign seal publish and declare the same Will as for her Last Will and Testament and that at the doing thereof she was of sound mind memory and understanding to the best of their knowledge and believe. Sam Bryan, Register. Received 68 pounds, 1 shilling, 5 1/4 pence from her father's estate distribution on December 7, 1786.

After her husband's untimely death the following year, and settlement of the estate, Mary began looking for a place to live. Evidently she looked to Philadelphia, where her sister Hannah (wife of Charles Wilstach) and her sister Margaret (wife of Daniel Brautigam) had well established homes. We find the following entries in Philadelphia city directories regarding Mary:

1794, Mary Newman, widow, 210 North 3rd
1797, Mary Newman, widow, shopkeeper, 199 North 3rd.
1802, Mary Newman, shopkeeper, 176 North 2nd

1806, Mary Newman, shopkeeper, 176 North 2nd
1808, Mary Newman, shopkeeper, 176 North 2nd
1810, Mary Newman, shopkeeper, 176 North 2nd

This appears to mean that Mary continued working at the shop until the year of her death.

There are other Newmans that appear from time to time in the directories. The 1802 directory will be taken as an example:
