An addendum was filed some months later, reporting that more than 600 hogheads of tobacco were being stored at the Tye River Warehouse, and that the warehouse was in poor repair. The implication was that the tobacco would not be worth much if it remained there much longer.

Henry and Daniel are the same person. He moved to Lebanon Pa where he was a saddler, reported then to have moved to Virginia.

Daniel was listed in the 1815 Virginia Landowners Directory, Volume 1 (Central Region) Nelson County, with the entry: "Leibrich, Daniel; Rockfish RV; 8SE" apparently meaning 8 miles SE of the county seat, Lovingston, on the Rockfish River.

On 22 May 1812, Daniel Leebrick was witness to the sale of 431 acres by Wm. Cabell and wife, Ann to George W. Varnum.

Karl C. Leebrick says that research done by Reams Leebrick, 1515 Radcliff Avenue, Lynchburg, Virginia, indicates that Daniel left for Nelson county, Virginia shortly after Dec 1806 when Louise was born. Reams says Daniel established an "Ordinary" on the property. In local terms, that is a tavern and rooming house. The bonds for an ordinary begin in 1809 and continued through at least 1837. In the later years, his name appeared on the list of "ordinary keepers and houses of private entertainment". He says that there were three more children born in Virginia: Catherine Ann, Nicholas and Frederick.

Why did Daniel leave the rest of his siblings in Pennsylvania? An entry in "Old Salem in Lebanon, A History of the Congregation and Town" may shed some light. In the opening issue of Mr. Snee's paper issued on Thursday, January 1st, 1807, ran the following advertisement: "WARNING FOR A WICKED MAN, In the town of Lebanon, name D. L.; he is a satler by trade, and I hereby warn everyone, not to have anything to do with him, for no one can get along with him". We know Daniel was a sadler in Lebanon, and it is unlikely that there was another one with the initials D.L.

A Daniel Leebrick is listed among the bidders at the estate sale of Dunmore Damron, held February 15, 1839. According to Debra Miller (fortlong@shentel.net), Dunmore resided around the Rockfish, Nelson County, Va area. This was the eastern part of Nelson Co, at the border with Albemarle Co. Daniel was the successful bidder on a Cotton Wheel for $1.40.

In the property tax records of Nelson county, four categories of property were listed: white males above 16 years of age, black males 12-16, black males above 16 and mares, colts and other animals. From 1809-1812, we see 1 white male listed and 1 animal. beginning in 1818, we see another animal added and 2 blacks over 16. In 1821 another white male is added. In 1828 there are 3 white males and 3 animals. In 1831, there was a young black added. In 1836, the animals were back down to 2. In 1839, there were no more young black men, but were now 4 adult black men and 3 animals. Based on averages in the property listings, there were usually twice as many black men listed as white men, and three times as many animals as white men. Parents: John Phillip Nicholas LEEBRICK and Katherine FRANKS.

Article on 24 Jan 1878: Mr. E. A. Leebrick has left at our office a remarkable piece of petrified wood that was dug up on the grounds near Mr. D. W. Prasley's new residence on West Hill. The specimen before us is a chuck weighing about twenty points. The outside part, or what was the sap of the wood, is partly crystallized, but the heart of the wood is petrified, and in such a manner as to show very distinctly the grain of the wood. The wood was exactly like white oak -- probably as a piece of white oak. All the markings of the growth of the tree and the grain of wood are well preserved. Small holes, evidently made by worms, remain. It is certainly an interesting specimen of fossil wood, and will be examined with much curiosity by students of paleontology. It is found on page 150-151 of the 1896 volume of Egle's "Notes and Queries: Historical, Biographical and Geneological, relating chiefly to Interior Pennsylvania"

Headline: THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING Sub Headline: Mr. and Mrs. Martin Early Celebrated Their Fiftieth Marriage Anniversary. From the Daily Telegraph of Friday, Octgober 9, 1896.

One of the most happy events in Palmyra society took place Thursday evening, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Early, corner Main and Railroad streets, Palmyra, Pa. It was the fiftieth or golden wedding anniversary, and was a most felicitous event. Invitations were sent to immediate relatives only, but a number of intimate friends were on hand to witness the happy anniversary. Martin Early and Miss Sarah Hummel were married October 8th, 1846, settled in Palmyra, and have resided there ever since. Mr. Early was engaged in the mercantile business for thirty-five years, and cultivated for many years one of the finest farms in the charming Lebanan Valley, located near the bustling town of Palmyra. He took great interest in scientific farming, and was for several years president of the Lebanan County Agricultural Society. Mrs. Early wore, last evening, the identical costume in which she was married fifty years ago. It is of white mull material, full waist, straight sleeves, tucked, finished with an edge, plain, full skirt, illusion neckdress, fastened with a miniture gold pin. Mr. Early wort the same suit in which he was married half a century ago-black cloth coat and pants, and white Marseilles vest. The groom is well up in years, and his venerable wife was charming and sunny in disposition as when a girl of "sweet 16"--both retaining remarkably good health. The dress worn by Mrs. Sadie Hummel Ricker, a grand-daughter of Mrs. Early, was the original wedding gown worn by Mrs. Elizabeth Leebrick Hummel (Mrs. Martin Early's mother), the wife of the late Col. Joseph Hummel of Hummelstown. Mrs. Elizabeth Hummell died several years ago at the age of 92 years. The dress in question was purchased in Philadelphia in 1817, seventy-nine years ago. The dress is of white satin levantine; low neck in pattern; short waist and short sleeves, with a large ruffle at wrist falling over the hand; a gored skirt, Queen Elizabeth neckwear, and white illusion headdress, trimmed with narrow white satin, edged with ribbon and flowing ties. This costume in its day, was of as much consequence from a fashionable standpoint as the trousseaus imported from Paris in this fashionable age at fabulous cost. The guests were: Edwin K and Silas L Early of Palmyra, and Martin H Early, New York city, children of the honored host and hostess; Richart T Hummel and wife of Hummelstown; Daid T. Hummel and wife of Philadelphia; Charles Carrol Hummel of New York city, Mrs. Mary Givler, of Mechanicsburg and Misses Carrie and Annie Hummel of Hummelstown, brothers and sisters of Mrs. Early......

Comm Biog Ency of Dauph Co states "Mrs. Hummel was a woman of great force of character, dignified, yet tender, truthful and consistent in all her walks through life". I hope all her descendants can be so described.

Elizabeth was mentioned in her aunt Maria Esther Cassel Berry's will when she died. Elizabeth was referred to as "the wife of Joseph Hummel, merchant in Hummelstown, Dauphin County". Parents: John Phillip LEEBRICK and Mary Gertrude CASSEL.

She was married to Joseph (Richard?) HUMMEL Col. on 15 Jun 1817 in Lebanon, Lebanon Co, Pa. Between 1975 and 1979 Ruth Leebrick Bruteau and her son, Frederic Bruteau, made several trips to Nelson County, Virginia, to gather information about the Ezra Zadock Leebrick family. In Lovingston, the Nelson County seat, they examined the records in the County Clerk's office and discovered various birth, marriage and death dates, and by talking with several of the oldest inhabitatnts they learned a number of things about life in that region during the youth of Ezra Leebrick.

For instance, in the small town of Norwood, where the Leebrick family had lived, a general grocery storekeeper, who had been born there in 1910 and had lived there all his life, described an interesting system of locks on the James River. The town was built near the river but had no convenient landing stage. A special kind of lock was constructed that permitted a boat to enter a narrow chamber, drawing enough water with it to lift the boat to a good height, after which the gate was closed behind it. The lock was on the side of the river and the boat could be approached from both sides of its narrow berth. This arrangement made it possible for a commercial boat, guided by tow lines drawn by horses from the towpath on the river bank, to stop at the town and conduct its daily business right from the boat itself. When the business day ended, the gate was opened, and the water rushed out, carrying the boat with it into the channel of the river again.

After these locks were constructed, constituting a new center of trade, the little town, which had been called Sleepy Hollow, acquired the new name New Market. (This is to be distinguished from a present day larger city named New Market). Later, when the railroad was built, around 1910, replacing the old towpath, the town was renamed again, this time taking the name it has now, Norwood.

After a sojourn in Oklahoma, the family moved to Kansas, and thence to Sturgeon, Missouri, where Permelia died of cancer, February 6, 1889. Parents: Louise Anna LEEBRICK.
