'Mr. Hartzell was born in Des Moines county, January 22, 1851 and moved to Kansas in 1880. For four years, he was sheriff of Chautauqua county, Kansas, and was aprominent member of the Masonic lodge and the Odd Fellow lodge at Sedan, Kansas where he lived for fourty years.

Occupation in 1900 Sedan City/Sedan Township/Chataqua County Ks listed as constable. He was appointed at one time as a deputy US Marshall.

He was active in the Masons, serving as Worth Patron of the Order of Eastern Star in 1900.

According to information provided to me by Virginia Blakinship, secretary for Harry Williams, Chautauqua County Sheriff, Samuel served two terms as Sheriff. He was elected in 1891, beating Peter Greer by 244 votes and was re-elected in 1893, beating E. S. Hanford by 201 votes. He ran as a Republican. Apparently, the office was limited to two two-year terms. In the accompanying letter, she says "When I came to work for the Sheriff's Department there were pictures of the previous Sheriff's hanging on the wall. I remember Mr. Hartzell's picture as he looked exactly like what I would think a Sherif of those times would look like. The janitor stored the pictures, or I would make a photo for you--actually I have asked him to find them for me but I think he has forgotten where he put them."

bullet Virginia Lee HARTZELL was born on 24 Oct 1920 in Ellsworth, Ellsworth Co, Kansas. She died on 8 Apr 2008 in Colby, Thomas Co, Ks. Virginia Lee (Hartzell) Leebrick was born October 24, 1920 in Ellsworth, Kansas, the second daughter of Faye Conner and Leland Earl Hartzell.
Her father was a driller in the oil fields of SE Kansas and Northern Oklahoma. When the girls were to begin high school the family decided they needed to stay in one place for the girls to have some continuity as they went through their high school years. Burton, Kansas was central to Leland's work, so the family resided in Burton where June and Virginia graduated from high school.
After graduation from high school, Virginia went to Sterling College, graduating with a teaching degree (education). Her first employment was in the McDonald High School, where she taught English, Latin and Speech.
One of her students introduced her to a friend of his, and area farmer, Wilbur Leebrick. Two years later, on November the 1st, 1945, they were married. They spent the first winter i Denver. When a farm became available near McDonald, they returned to farm life, which was totally new to Virginia.
When a teaching position became available in Atwood, Virginia taught in the High School while her husband constructed terraces in the county. While in Atwood their first child, David, was born September 22, 1947. Her family became the joy and center of her life.
When David was only a few days old, they moved to a farm SW of Atwood, where they lived for 58 years, and where three more children were born: Nicolee Jo, Linda and Lance.
Virginia made the home a warm and welcoming place for the family and friends. She was always active in the Steven's Chapel church, which was only a few miles from the farm home. Later, she taught both adult and children's Bible study classes at Herndon Covenant Church.
When their youngest son, Lance, had taken the management of the farm, they retired and made their home in Colby.
In addition to her family and her faith, Virginia had two other passions in life. One was her art work, which started while in college. Her pastel portraits are treasured by many and can be found in homes, museums and many homes. Her other passion was high school teaching. Hundreds of students learned the finer points of English, literature and speech as well as production of class plays. Whatever Virginia did, whether teaching English, painting , doing chalk talks, or raising a family, she followed the advice in Col. 3:23 "Whatever you do, do it heartily as unto the Lord."
Preceding her in death was her daughter, Linda, in 1976. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Wilbur, of the home; her sister, June Neely of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 3 children; David and wife Sue Leebrick of Mechanicsville, Va, Nicolee Jo of Colby, Lance and wife Brenda Leebrick of Atwood, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was buried on 14 Apr 2008 in Steven's Chapel Church, Rawlins Co, Ks. Taught high school (English, Speech,Yearbook) in Atwood and McDonald Kansas. Earned BS in English from Sterling College.

Because of her dad's job in the newly discovered oil fields in Kansas and Oklahoma, Virginia's family moved frequently. Her dad drew out a map of the places, in order, where she had lived. I have seen the map. It contains the following sequence of homes. Born in Ellsworth, KS, then lived in Florence, Leon, Howard, Eldorado, Leon and Burkett, KS. Then Braman, Ok, then back to Burns, KS. In the period of first through eighth grade, the family lived first in Burke, KS, then Olpe, Rosalia, Winfield, Pawhuska(OK), Wichita, Pawhuska(OK) and Wichita. The family chose to stay put in Burton, KS during Virginia's high school years, and then moved to Sterling, Kansas during her college years.

Graduated from Burton High School in 1937. Parents: Leland Earl HARTZELL and Josephine Faye CONNER .

She was married to Wilbur Pershing LEEBRICK on 1 Nov 1945 in Atwood, Rawlins Co, Ks. "In a candle light cermony held Thursday Evening, November 1 at the Methodist Church in Atwood, the marriage of Miss Virginia Lee Hartzell and Mr. Wilbur P. Leebrick was solemnized in the presence of a few friends and relatives by Rev. Maurice E. Rickard. The double ring ceremony was used.
The bride, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Hartzell of Ellinwood, Kansas was charming in a white satin gown with lace over-net. She carried a white prayer book and a cluster of red roses, and wore white flowers in her hair. Miss Maxine Leebrick, sister of the groom, was brideswmaid. Her gown was of blue satin with lace over-net skirt. Her corsage, a gift of the bride was beautiful yellow roses.
The groom and his attendant, Mr. Archer Marshall wore dark suits with white carnation boutonniers.
Mrs. L. H. Payne of McDonald played beautifully several nuptial selections.
The bride is a graduate of Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas. She taught English in the McDonald High School for three years. The groom attended Hays College after graduating from the Atwood High School and taught two years in the County. After a honeymoon trip to Colorado the young couple will establish their home on the D. R. Courtright farm south of McDonald.
