Adam Wilhite was born circa 1760 in Culpeper Co., Virginia.1,2 He married Missy Batey or Patey ?.3 Adam died before December 1815 in Jefferson Co., Tennessee.4,5
Adam signed a petition in Culpeper Co., Virginia in 1776. In the same county Adam and wife Batey sold 50 acres in Greene Co., Tennessee to Bryant MDGrath on 16 Nov. 1778.
Adam apparently moved to east Tennessee, then North Carolina, with his father Conrad prior to 1782. Adam "Willhight" received a land grant from North Carolina date Sept. 29, 1783 for 200 acres of land in Greene Co. This land was surveyed Jan. 7, 1787. In Greene Co., Tennessee, he was taxed for 200 acres in 1785. Also, in Greene Co. he received a grant for 200 acres on Camp Creek on 18 March 1789. Camp Creek was described as being in Washington Co. although the grant was recorded in Greene Co. and Camp Creek actually lies wholly in Greene Co.6 There is an additional land grant in 1789 to a Adam Wilheight of 200 acres in Washington Co. on the waters of the Nolachucky.7
Adam received several other land grants in Greene, Hawkins, and Jefferson Co. with the last Mar. 5, 1798 in Jefferson Co. where he received 250 acres on the north side of French Broad River on the waters of Dumplin Creek adjacent to Abraham Swagerty.8 However, land grant #350 dated Mar. 8, 1793 on Beaver Dam Creek, Hawkins Co., was recorded Apr. 11, 1808 in Knox Co., Tennessee. On 19 Aug. 1793 he sold 12 1/2 acres on Camp Creek to John McDonald.
The Germanna Record No. 13 indicates that the probable children of Adam were Ezekiel, John, Nancy, and James who married Comfort Stansbury. Futher research has questioned whether the James that married Comfort Stansbury was the son of Adam and speculates that James that married first Peggy Baker and second Susan Cates was the son of Adam.
Additional daughters have been identified by Terri Jean Adams of Florida. These daughters are (given name unknown) married William Hickman, Avy Anne married Thomas Cate, Barbara married Samuel Cate, and Elizabeth married Joshua Cate.
Family tradition provided by Terri Jean Adams of Florida says there was a grandparent that drowned while crossing a river and the body was never found. According to Marge Wilhite, publisher of The Wilhoit-Wilhite Connexions, says that family records of the descendants of Madison Willhite, projected grandson of Adam, state that Madison drowned while crossing the river going to another piece of property. However, nothing was mentioned about the incident in the obituary for him. It may be that the family tradition was referring to Adam. Since no corpse was found, Adam was presumed dead by the state in Jefferson Co. in Dec. 1815.
