     John Rose Jr. was born on 8 November 1829 in Tennessee.^1,2,3,4,5 He married first Evelyn Williams circa 1854 in Sevier Co., Tennessee.^1,3 He married second Emily C. Fagala on 28 August 1881 in Sevier Co., Tennessee.¹ John died on 11 May 1910 at age 80.^6,1 He was interred in Seven Islands Cemetery in Knox Co., Tennessee.¹
     

     John lived on Gap Creek, By 1871 he owned all of the original Rose land grants plus had purchased additional land which brought the total to about 600 acres. It is said that he had to leave Sevier Co. during the Civil War. He was accused of being a bridge burner and the Confederate authorities did not have a trial for such activities but just hung you on the spot.

     He and other men went to Kentucky. John overheard some men conspire to rob him. He left early in the night and went along to Kentucky by himself. His military record has never been discovered but it was obvious that he was for the Union. After the war he returned to Sevier Co. Shortly after his return he sold his Sevier Co. holdings and moved about three miles to Knox Co. at Seven Islands on the French Broad River. There he purchased the Peter Keener mill. There was a water powered sawmill and a water powered grist mill.

     In 1862, during the Civil War, John carved his name in a cave on the family farm. The letters were at least 12 inches high. His son Daniel also carved his name in the same cave some 15 years later. His neighbor, George Creswel, also carved his name in the same cave. This name was about ten feet long.

     His sons, Albert and John, went with their father to Seven Islands. Daniel and Thomas went into the sawmill business at another location. Albert and John were midgets. The two boys are buried at Seven Islands Cemetery but separated from others in the family.¹

     In the Census of 1850, enumerated 7 October 1850, John Rose Jr. was listed as a head of household in Sevier Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 21, occupation as a farmer with real estate value of $500, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Elizabeth Rose and Elen Rose.²

     In the Census of 1860, enumerated 11 July 1860, John Rose Jr. was listed as a head of household in Sevier Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 30, occupation as a farmer with real estate value of $1200 and personal estate value of $750, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Eveline Rose, Daniel M. Rose, Thomas Rose and Albert Rose.³

     In the Census of 1870, enumerated 17 August 1870, John Rose Jr. was listed as a head of household in Sevier Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 40, occupation as a farmer with real estate value of $2400 and personal estate value of $1093, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Daniel M. Rose, Thomas Rose, Albert Rose and John Rose.⁴

     In the Census of 1880, enumerated 16 June 1880, John Rose Jr. was listed as head of household in Trundles Cross Roads, Sevier Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 50, occupation as a lumber dealer, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Lamos Rose, Albert Rose and John Rose.⁵
