     Henry Rose was born circa 1694 in Surry Co., Virginia.¹ He married Mary Tudor before 1721.¹ Henry died in 1752 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.¹
     

     Henry also lived in Isle of Wight Co. in 1731-32 and Southampton Co. after it split from Isle of Wight. By 1750 he was in Brunswick Co. where his brother John had settled many years earlier.

     Henry Rose was born in 1758.¹ Henry died on 25 September 1835 in Pope Co., Illinois.¹

     Hosea Rose was probably born in Virginia circa 1742.¹ Hosea died after 1830 in Sevier Co., Tennessee.
     

     Earlier research that indicated that Hosea Rose married Sarah Taylor, widow of William Taylor sometime after William's death in 1760 and that they moved with Sarah's two sons, Parmenas and LeRoy to Burke Co., North Carolilna has been disproved by later research. It appears that Sarah's second husband was likely Bennet Rose not Hosea Rose. [See Tennessee Ancestors Vol. 15, Nos. 1, 2 and 3, 1999, a publication of the East Tennessee Historical Society.]

     The earliest record of Hosea is a tax record in Granville Co., St. John's District, North Carolina in 1762 along with John Rose. He appears on Bute Co. tax lists in 1766. Bute Co. was formed from Granville Co. in 1764. In 1772 he is mentioned in the court records of Surry Co. as a witness. Two years later he is found on the tax records of Surry Co. from which Wilkes Co. was formed in 1777. In 1779 John Sr., and John Jr., are obtaining land in Wilkes Co. while Hosea is obtaining land in Washington Co., North Carolina (later Tennessee.) John Rose Sr. deeded 100 acres of land to "Ozee" Rose 27 April 1784, in Wilkes Co., from his 400 acre grant on Gray's Creek. In a deed date 11 June 1784, Hose Rose of Wilkes Co. deeds to Sterling Rose for sixty pounds, land containing 100 acres in the county of Wilkes on Gray's Creek beginning at the northeast corner, running south to John Rose Contidional line, west to the mouth of a small branch against the plantation, northwest to a pine, north to a red oak on Thomas Paynes line, east to the beginning. The deed was witnessed by John Cargile and John Turnbill and proved in the July Term 1784.

     J. G. M. Ramsey, Annals of Tennessee to the End of the Eighteenth Century, on page 138 indicates that "Ossa Rose" is a signer of the Wautauga Association petition to the Provincial Council of North Carolina, not dated, but received in Raleigh on 22 August 1776. This petition contains about 115 names of the earliest settlers in what is now Tennessee. There was survey for Hosea Rose in Washington Co., North Carolina on December 3, 1778, 299 acres situated in Washington Co., on south fork of Cherokee Creek bounded by Mr. Baileys and Lewis land. Hosea sold the 299 acres 10 August 1783 to John Hunter for 15 pounds. It appears that Hosea may have returned to Wilkes Co. but later returns to Washington Co.

     On October 13, 1779, 100 acres of land was laid off and measured for Hosea Rose on the north fork of Cherokee Creek joining James Rheas land and transferred to Benedict Middleton and then transferred to said Rose 10 March 1784. On 17 November 1790 Hosea Rose obtained another grant of 320 acres on Robert Sevier's line in Washington Co.

     In 1783, Hosea appears as Roase in the court records of Washington Co., Tennessee. In 1799 sold 100 acres on Cherokee Creek to Jeremiah Regen. On February 2, 1807, he sold land between the waters of Cherokee and Knobs Creeks to Edward Reves for $116. On November 2, 1807, Hosea sold land to Henry Taylor for $1300. On November 11, 1807, he acquired 150 acres of land whereon Peter Bowman now lives for $306.

     Hosea appears on the Washington Co. Tax lists in 1778, 1791 through 1797, 1801, 1806 and 1807. He received two land grants from Tennessee in Sevier Co; seven acres and three rods dated 29 May 1807 for $87.97 1/2, and 132 acres one rod and eleven poles south of French Broad and Holston date 26 may 1807 for #119.07.

     He evidently performed some type of service for the Revoluntionary War that entitled him to pay. Two pay vouchers were issued by the auditors of Washington Co. and Sullivan Co., North Carolina: no. 1689 - Hosea Rose allowed one pound eleven shillings and sixpence specie 12th June 1783, signed by Landon Carter, Anthony Bledsoe, and J. Sevier; and no. 773 - certify Hosea Rose allowed fifteen pounds, one shilling and sixpence specie June 1783, signed ?, Edmund Williams, and John Sevier. Hosea also may be the Hosea Ross in State Treasury Revolutionary Army Accounts, North Carolina Archives, no. 1209 "Hosea Rofs for svces against the Chicomaga Indians", dated May 28, 1790.

     Hosea appears several times in the court minutes of Washington Co. from 1782 through 1808. The Tennessee Historical Magazine, vol. 6, page 57 states that on 20 April 1815 John Sevier met with Hosea Rose and others at Boyd's Creek (Brabson's Ferry) for a Battalioin Muster. He then returned with Hosea to Gap Creek and they dined at Hosea's home. John Sevier was a early settler of the area and also was a Congressman.²

     A document found at the Tennessee State Library, Court Records, Washington County, I-C-I, Box !, Folder 3, Acquisition 25 states that on 20 November 1780 that John Tipton, John Sevier, Lieutenant Hosea Rouse and others met in a court of equity. Hozea Roase signed the order with others. This group was to report for the battle that developed at Cowpens, NC on 17 January 1781 but they never crossed the mountains into North Carolina. Hosea very likely fought at the Battle of Boyds Creek (with the Cherokee Indians) during the Revoulutionary War but there is no actual record to support this. This battle with the Indians was between the time of the order to go to meet General Davidson and the battle at Cowpens. Also since Hosea Rose was a Lieutenant only a fews weeks after the Battle of Kings Mountain, it is very likely that he was at King's Mountain also. He was a friend of all of the principals that were there from this side of the mountain and all able men from this side of the mountain went to the Battle of Kings Mountain.³
