     William joined a company raised by Col. Joel A. Battle, the "Zollicoffer Guards", being mustered into service 17 May 1861. His company was organized with the Twentieth Tennessee Regiment and placed in Gen. Zollicoffer's brigade. He participated in all of the battles of Gen. Zollicoffer's campaign in East Tennessee and East Kentucky in 1861 and 1862. At Cumberland Ford in 1861 he was promoted to first corporal. At the battle of Mill Springs he was elected second sergeant and served several months as orderly sergeant. The Twentieth Tennessee engaged the Twelfth Illinois at the battle of Shiloh on the 6th and 7th of April 1862. After the battle of Shiloh the Confederate army was reorganized and William was elected second lieutenant. He served in this capacity until near the close of the war when he was promoted to first lieutenant. He was wounded in the chest with a mini-ball in the battle at Murfressboro. He later participated in the battles of Hoover's Gap, Bethpage Bridge, and Chickamauga where he was thought to have been mortally wounded while charging a battery, but recovered. He fought in the battles of Rockface Gap, Resaca, Dallas, Pine Mountain, Kenesaw Mountain, and Peachtree Creek. At Resaca he was wounded in the left foot. On August 5, 1864, while engaged in a skirmish in front of Atlanta, William lost his left arm. He recovered and stayed with the army receiving his parole of honor on May 17, 1865. After the war William took up the study of medicine beginning practice in 1869 at Flat Rock and later moved to Nashville. He was elected alderman in 1876 to represent the Eighth Ward of the city in the Common Council.¹

     Mrs. Harper is survived by her husband, sons, J. L. Harper and F. O. Harper of Nashville; daughters, Mrs. A. P. Oaks and Mrs. W. R. Duke of Wichita Falls, Texas, Mrs. C. G. Lawrence of Birmingham, Alabama; Mrs. G. H. Hulan of Shelbyville and Mrs. G. W. Davidson of Dickson, Tennessee. Brothers Lee McMurry, Will McMurry, Frank McMurry and sister Mrs. Edward F. Corbitt, Nashville.
     George Davidson, Carl Lawrence, Ross Duke, George Hulan, Roy Harper, Jr., Carl Hulan, her grandsons and sons-in-law served as pall bearers.¹⁰
