John's Obituary:
John Byerly passed peacefullly to the other shore where mortals weep no more Thrusday morning, Aug. 31st, 1893. He had been afflicted for several months with heart failure. Deceased was a man of years, aged 76 years, 3 months and 6 days.
John Byerly, father of the late Wm. Byerly, was born in Rockingham Co., Va., May 25, 1817. Was married to Amanda Henton in 1840. The fruits of this marriage were twelve children, eight girls and four boys, six of whom are still living. A short period before the war he moved with his family to Sullivan Co., Tennessee, remaining there until 1874. He then removed to Blount Co. and in 1880 he and his wife came to Kansas with his son, William, to whom we have before alluded.
Mr. Byerly was a devout christian, having been a member of the Dunkard church for about twenty-four years. He always possessed a faith, an eternal hope that reached beyond the skies.
The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Pigman, were held at the residence of his son in law, R. L. Dishner, near the Junction, where he had remained during his severest afflictions. The commodious residence was well filled and yet a greater number would have been present had the sad event been more widely known. The song service impressively rendered by the choir thrilled one with almost a divine sweetness. The casket was handsomely decorated with the choicest flowers which betokened the kindness of loving friends.
Many are the hearfelt sympathies extended to the bereaved relatives who were present, also to those whose distance prohibited them from attending the last sad rites of the departed, but a deeper and more profound sympathy is bestowed upon the bereft companion who yet remains to bear life's burdens.

"How like the flowers is he whose transient life is ended.
The hopes and dreams are, that for one brief hour,
Make the sad heart a garder bright and splendid
About love's latticed bower.
A few years of almost perfect pleasure,
A foretaste of the happiness to come.
Then sudden frost--the garden yields its treasure,
And stands in sorrow, dumb.
Oh, list dear hearts! The flower may lose its glory
Beneath the touch of frost, but does not die.
In spring it will repeat the old, sweet story
Of God's dear by and by.
In Heaven, if never here, the hopes we cherish,
The flowers of human lives we count as lost,
Will live again. Such hearts cannot parish,
And Heaven has no frost.

The land purchased by Joseph laid in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley with a spectacular view. The Blue Ridge range is to the east, the Alleghaney mountains to the west. The land was located along the Great Wagon Road stretching north and south through the valley. The name later given to the area where Joseph settled was "Pleasant Valley."
It is estimated that Joseph owned around 600 acres of land. Lands received by his sons through his will totaled 512 acres. This was after sales of 50 acres to Henry Dike on 19 November 1805 and another sale to Christian Niswanger in April of 1789.
Joseph established a mill in Pleasant Valley, although some say it was a distillery before becoming a mill. Another descendant recalls a comment that Joseph was a distiller. This is not in conflict with the Mennonite or Brethren faiths of the Byerlys. The Temperance Movement was a child of the early 19th century. Until then, tax lists revealed that many Mennonites and Brethren distilled liquor as most Germans. Homemade beer was not thought of as an intoxicating drink, but as a quencher during the hot Virginia summers. Drinking, more or less temperately, was an unquestioned practice until the second quarter of the 18th century. They did fight excesses though. The Dunkers were the first to go on record against any form of indulgence in alcohol long before the temperance movement reached organized form.
The mill, built around 1800, was destroyed by fire in 1886. It stood on Swift Run Gap road where it crossed Kirtesses' Creek.2
Joseph is buried in an unmarked grave in the Byerly Cemetery on the original farm at Pleasant Valley with two of his sons, Joseph II and David, and their wifes. Joseph's will was burned in the Civil War and only the administrators are given. Executor bonds, 21 June 1803, list Joseph Biyer, Sr. descendant. Executors listed are Joseph, David, and John Byerly. No other children are listed. The bond was set for $40,000.2
Joseph was also known as Brier.
Joseph was also known as Joseph Beyrer.
Joseph arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam on the ship Louisa on 8 November 1752. He came from the Palatinate to Pennsylvania, then to Maryland, and about 1783 to Rockingham Co., Virginia.
