     Edmund E. Bumpass was probably born in Hanover Co., Virginia.¹

     Edouad Bompasse was probably born in London, England, about 1603 or 1605.¹ He married Hannah ? in 1628 in New Plymouth Colony.¹ Edouad died on 3 February 1693 in Marshfield, New Plymouth Colony.¹
     

     Edouad was also known as Edward Bumpas.

     Edward's wife has tentatively been identified by some researchers as Hannah Annable. Other researchers indicate that his wife could not have been Hannah Annable and they are probably correct.

     The following is based on information found in Lynn A. Bumpus book on the Descendants of Edouad Bompasse.

     Edouad Bompasse arrived at the Plymouth Colony aboard the ship Fortune on November 10, 1621. The Fortune was the second ship to arrive at the Plymouth colony preceded only by the Mayflower. He became known as Edward Bumpas in the Colony. The name has taken on various spellings over the years: Bump, Bumpas, Bumpass, Bumpers, Bumps, and Bumpus.

     The name Bompasse is probably of French origin, possibly Huguenot. The old Norman and French name Bonpas, literally translated Goodstep, is an aristocratic name in Europe. The Bonpas family family originated in Perpignam in the extreme south western portion of France near the Mediterranean. The name probably came to England with the Normans and again with the Huguenots.

     Bumpus also exists as a name derived from Boneboz in Normandy, a Fief held from the Earls of Mellent.

     Tradition states that in January 1240, in the wars of Raymond VII, Count of Toulous, a youth was handed a very important dispatch to convey from one commander to another. To deliver this, it became necessary that he pass through the enemy lines. It was a difficult and delicate errand, demanding not courage alone, but also astuteness and tact. When at length he dashed into camp and laid the dispatch at the feet of his commander, the General clapped his hands and shouted, "Bon pas!" "Bon pas!" (Well done!). His comrades caught up the expression and shouted back, "Bon pas!" "Bon pas!". So, on that day he received a new name, a title of honor conferred for valiant services rendered. The name clung to him until he became known as Bon Pas, and was the father of the family Bon Pas. In France the name is sometimes spelled as pronounced, Bon Par. The name was Anglicised, the two words composing it run into one and it became Bonpas, Bompas, Bumpas, Bumpas, Bompass. In New Enland records of Edward and his family it is written as Bonpas, Bompas, Bompasse, Bumpasse and Bumpas.²

     One source states that Edouad Bompasse was born about 1605, St. Barthoomew Parish, London, England.

     Edouad was probably a member of the Protestants who fled from Holland to Amsterdam. He reportedly was with the Pilgrims in Leyden, Holland and probably went to England with those who returned after the first attempt to sail for America failed. Willison in his Saints and Strangers states that Eduoad Bompasse was a Saint and native Leydener. Leyden was located six to seven miles up the Rhine River and was considered the spiritual capital of Protestant Europe.

     In 1623 he received one share in the land allotment as one of those who came on the Fortune and in 1627 a share in the cattle, indicating that he was unmarried.

     He sold his acre of land on the north side of town in 1628 to Robert Hix and was granted 20 acres of land on Duxbury Bay beyond Eagle Nest Creek south of what is now known as Blue Fish River. Here he settled and build a house and palisado. In March 1634/35 he sold this property John Washburne and was allowed to "take up land in another place." In March 1644/45 when the boundaries of Marshfield were laid, his property was included. He is included in the 1643 list of men of Marshfield able to bear arms. Sometime before Sept. 1645 he sold his property to Solomon Lenner.

     Edward was one of the original proprietors of Middleboro where his son Joseph settled. He also was a purchaser of Dartmouth lands. On 15 July 1653 Edmond Chandler of Duxbury exchanged his rights in lands in Satuckquett for Edward Bumas's lands and rights in Cushenett and Coaksett.

     He was on the jury in 1654 and 1655 and in 1657 took the oath of fidelity as one of the town of Duxbury.

     After 1656 he seems to have lost control of his properties and, through lack of cooperation in the family, he and his wife, Hannah, were to some extend dependent upon the community for their well being. He was given the loan of a cow and in 1663 there was a contribution for his relief when eight townsmen contributed 12.5 bushels of corn. Thereafter, various townsmen bequeathed him grantities of corn or wheat in their wills.

     Although he and his sons, as "first borne in the colony" were eligible for grants they did not take advantage of their positions. There appears to have been a lack of cooperation in the family as their mother was placed in the Winter and Hewitt families to be taken care of. In the next generation several branches of the family prospered and left good estates. The earliest deeds between the sons Edward, John, and Joseph, which were later confirmed by their father, have a peculiar wording, and is seems strange that he did not provide in these deeds that he and his wife should be maintained for life.

     Edward Bumpass married Martha Coulter circa 1767.¹ Edward died after 13 December 1776.¹
     

     Edward made a will on 13 December 1776 in Orange Co., North Carolina. In Edward's will dated December 13, 1776, he mentions his residence as of Orange, Provence of N. C; mentions his wife Martha Bumpas, mentions his children Augustine, James, Sarah, Gabriel, Elizabeth and Robert. He makes James Lang, Gabriel Davy, his true and trusty friends and Martha his wife sole executors. The estate of Edward was administered after the death of his mother some twenty years after his death by Augustine who then appears to have joined his older brothers in the west.

     Edward Bumpas was born on 16 September 1688 in Rochester, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.¹ He married first Rhoda Bump in 1708.¹ He married second Martha Raymond, daughter of John Raymond and Martha Woodin, on 28 February 1717/18 in Middleboro, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.¹ Edward died on 14 November 1745 in Wareham, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, at age 57.¹
     

     Edward and Martha lived at Wareham. In 1739 he was authorized to call the first town meeting and presided as moderator. He was the master of ceremonies at the ordination of the first minister of the new church of Wareham, Rev. Rowland Thatcher, who was ordained December 26, 1739. He was a juryman in 1743. Edward and Martha joined the new church at Wareham in 1739. He owned land in Rochester from 1713 to 1740.

     Edward Bumpas was born on 15 April 1638 in New Plymouth Colony.¹ Edward probably died unmarried on 3 April 1693 in New Plymouth Colony.¹
     

     Edward took the oath of fidelity in 1657 at Marshfield. In June 1662 "being one of the first born of this government" he was to receive a grant of land. He sold "all lands at Nemasket/Middleboro lately brought of my brother John" on 23 December 1663 to his brother Joseph. The last record pertaining to Edward, Jr., shows a mental condition: Plymouth Colony Court order 6:20, 4 July 1679: Edward Bumpas for striking and ausing his parents, was whipt: his punishment as alleviated in regard he was crazy brained otherwise he had bine put to death or otherwise sharply punished.

     Elizabeth Bumpass was born on 8 May 1765.^1,2 She married John Bumpass, son of Samuel Bumpass and Mary ?.² Elizabeth died on 10 March 1839 at age 73.^2,1

     Elizabeth Bumpass married Gabriel Davey.¹

     Elizabeth died unmarried.

     Elizabeth Bumpas was born on 29 March 1633 in Duxbury, New Plymouth Colony.¹ She married Joseph Rose [Sr.], son of Thomas Rose, between 5 June 1653 and 1654 in Marshfield, New Plymouth Colony.¹

     
     

     Elizabeth was also known as Beetsy.¹

     Elizabeth Ann Bumpass was born in 1812 in Tennessee.¹ She married Melvin George Cox, son of Thomas Cox and Rebecca Webb, on 29 August 1831 in Tennessee.² Elizabeth died of congestion on 18 September 1878 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee.³

     Elizabeth Doggett Bumpas was born in 1808.¹ Elizabeth married first William Bumpass, son of John Bumpass and Elizabeth Bumpass, on 4 April 1830.¹ Elizabeth married second James E. Townsend on 9 March 1836.¹ Elizabeth died in 1889.¹

     Elizabeth Jane Bumpass was born on 3 August 1829 in Tennessee.^1,2 Elizabeth married first Bedford W. Miles.³ Elizabeth married second Jeremiah F. Robertson on 15 October 1860.³ Elizabeth died on 10 March 1904 at age 74.¹ She was interred on 11 March 1904 in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Davidson Co., Tennessee.¹
     

     Elizabeth was also known as Eliza.

     Elizabeth Jane Miles was listed at age 24, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of Bedford W. Miles in Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1850, enumerated 9 October 1850.²

     Faith Bumpas was born in 1630 in New Plymouth Colony.¹

     Fannie Bumpass was born in 1872 in Bumpass, Virginia.¹ She married Unknown Caffrey.¹

     Fanny died of scarlet fever.¹

     Florence Omega Bumpass was born on 9 August 1820 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.^1,2,3 She married Alexander Hill, son of John Hill and Margaret L. Covington, on 9 September 1841 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.^4,5 Florence died on 30 March 1905 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 84.⁶ She was interred on 31 March 1905 in Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.⁶
     

     Florence was also known as Oma.

     Information from Don Attison gives the death year and burial as 1905 although he states that the Springhill Cemetery records indicate 1904.

     Florence Omega Bumpass was listed at age 28, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of William Bumpass in Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1850, enumerated 3 September 1850.⁷

     Omega Hill was listed at age 40, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of Alexander Hill in 11th Civil District, Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1860, enumerated 4 June 1860.¹

     Omega Hill was listed at age 49, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of Alexander Hill in Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1870, enumerated 18 August 1870.²

     Omega Hill was listed as 60 at age Tennessee, in the household of Alexander Hill in Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1880 enumerated 6 June 1880.³

     Frances Bumpass was probably born in Hanover Co., Virginia.¹

     Francis M. Bumpass was born between 1833 and 1836.¹ Francis died in 1862.¹

     Gabriel Bumpass was probably born in Deep Creek, North Carolina, circa 1765.¹ He married Eliza Winstead on 22 December 1793.¹ Gabriel married second Charlotte Winstead on 1 September 1825.¹ Gabriel died in 1846.¹
