Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr.
Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr. was listed as a son at age 7, born in Tennessee, in the household of Carl Greenville Lawrence [Sr.] in First Civil District (part of), Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1910 enumerated 28 April 1910.4
Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr. was listed as a son at age 7 (age incorrect), born in Tennessee, in the household of Carl Greenville Lawrence [Sr.] in 11th Civil District, Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1920 enumerated 2 January 1920.3
Carl Jr. was born in 1903 in Nashville, Tennessee, and can be found with his parents on the 1910 and 1920 U. S. Census in Nashville. It appears that sometime in the early 1920s he moved to Detroit, Michigan, for awhile. He may have stayed with his aunt Lessie Smith, her husband John Wise Smith, and their family. The Smith family was listed on the 1920 U. S. Census as residing in Detroit, Wayne Co. In an interview with their oldest son, Earl Lawrence Smith, in the late 1990s Earl related remembering Carl walking down railroad tracks in Detroit playing the saxaphone.
By 1924, Carl Jr. was in Georgia where he probably met and married Kathleen Harr. Sometime between 1921 and 1923, his father had moved the family from Nashville to Cobb Co., Georgia. Kathleen, whose mother had died in 1913 was partially raised by her mother's sister Della Matthiessen who was listed in the 1920 U. S. Census as residing in Lemons, Cobb Co., Georgia. Kathleen probably was living there when she met Carl Jr. Carl considered Paul Matthiesen, the eldest son of Della and Jacob (Jake) Matthieson, as one of his favorite friends.
In the Census of 1930, enumerated 2 April 1930, Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr. was listed as head of household in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama. He was listed at age 27, occupation as a photo engraver, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Kathleen Amanda Lawrence.2
Carl apparently moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a short period of time after the marriage as that is where his eldest child, Jessie Louise, was born in 1928. Knoxville was the home of the father and step-mother of his wife Kathleen. By 1930, however they had moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where his father was now living and was listed on the 1930 U. S. Census as a photo-engraver at a newspaper office. I believe that he and his father, who also was a photo-engraver, were probably working at the same newspaper office in Birmingham. There is a photo of them and several other employees at a dinner which is undated but I believe may have been some of the staff of the newspaper.
About 1934, Carl and family moved to Springfield, Ohio. In 1936 they moved 1111 Broadway Street in Springfield where they lived when their son Paul was born in 1937. At the time Carl was employed at the newspaper as a photo-engraver. According to their daughter Jessie, Carl, at some time while living in Springfield, tried to go into business for himself but was unsuccessful.
Among their neighbors on Broadway were the Currys who lived two houses up and had a daughter Sandra who was about the age of their son Paul. Next the the Currys were Ralph and Hazel Nelson with their son David who was about the age of their daughter Jessie and next to the Nelsons were the Robeys. For awhile Carl's sister Thelma, her husband James Newsome, and their family lived a few houses further up on Broadway. The Newsomes were living in Springfield when their son James Jr. was born in 1941.
During World War II, Carl was an Air Raid Warden for the neighborhood on Broadway. Whenever there was an air raid warning it was his duty to go out and check the neighborhood to make sure no lights were visable from any of the homes. This was a periodic exercise during the War to prepare for the event of an air attack by the enemy. I doubt that even if enemy planes were able to reach the United States that any would ever reach as far inland as Springfield.
Sometime after June 1945, the family moved to Southern Avenue in Springfield. In the fall of 1945 the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where they initially lived at 112 North 61st Street, near the parents of Carl. By the fall of 1946 they had moved to Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1947 Carl and Kathleen divorced. Carl moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kathleen and the kids remained in Nashville. About 1948, Paul went to Cincinnati to join his father who had remarried. Jessie remained in Nashville where she had graduated from high school and was employed.
Carl and his second wife separated about 1949 and he later reunited with Kathleen in Cincinnati. They moved to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1950, returning to Cincinnati in 1951. In late 1953 or early 1954 the family moved to Dayton, Ohio.
In early 1955, Kathleen suffered a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized. Carl took a job in Charlotte, North Carolina. Paul, who was senior in high school and was employed, did not want to move to Charlotte so he remained in Dayton to finish his senior year.
Carl died in November of 1955 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Carl Greenville Lawrence Sr. ca. 1902
Carl owned his own engraving company in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.
Carl married Jessie Kidder Harper in 1902. Family tradition says they had a Gretna Green wedding (eloped). Their first child, Carl Jr., was born in 1903. On the 1910 U. S. Census they were living in Nashville at 519 Eleventh Street South and Carl was working as an engraver for a newspaper. Their residence as about a block over from where his parents lived on Twelfth Street.
On the 1920 U. S. Census Carl is listed in the 11th Civil District and no street address is given. The following census pages listed addresses on Eleventh Avenue so it may well be that Carl was still living on Eleventh Avenue also. His occupation is listed as a photo-engraver for a printing company. Jessie, his wife, was listed with an occupation of clerk in a drug store. The ages of Carl's children on the 1920 U. S. Census are all incorrect. Actually the ages are off by one line. If you take Carl Jr. and move him to the top of the list of children as he is the oldest, leaving the ages on the lines recorded and moving all other children down one line then the children and ages match.
Sometime between September 1921 and March 1924, Carl moved the family to Cobb County, Georgia. His son Paul Haywood was born in Nashville on 23 September 1921 and their youngest son and last child was born on 10 March 1924 in Smyrna, Cobb Co., Georgia.
By 1930, the family had moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where they are listed on the census at 115 61st Street. His occupation is listed as an engraver-photograph. It's my understanding that he work for a newspaper but later ran his own photo-engraving company. I believe this is the residence where they lived for most of the rest of their lifes and where he was living on my visits as a young child. I can remember dinners there that included several of his children and grandchildren. The adults ate at the dining room table while all of the grandchildren ate in another room supervised by my sister, Jessie Lou Lawrence, who was the oldest of all of the cousins.
Carl's wife, Jessie, died from cancer in 1948. By the time of his death in 1966, Carl was living with his daughter Louise Attison in Trussville, Alabama, and was blind.
Carl Greenville Lawrence [Sr.] was listed as the head of a family on the 1910 Census enumerated 28 April 1910, in First Civil District (part of), Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 29, occupation as an engraver, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Jessie Kidder Lawrence, Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr., Irene Flourney Lawrence and Henry Richard Lawrence.4
Carl Greenville Lawrence [Sr.] was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census enumerated 2 January 1920, in 11th Civil District, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 39, occupation as a photo engraver, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Jessie Kidder Lawrence, Irene Flourney Lawrence, Henry Richard Lawrence, Mary Louise Lawrence, Ernest Ross Lawrence, Thelma Marie Lawrence, Jesse Murry Lawrence and Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr..3
In the Census of 1930, enumerated 21 April 1930, Carl Greenville Lawrence [Sr.] was listed as head of household in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama. He was listed at age 48, occupation as an engraver, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Jessie Kidder Lawrence, Mary Louise Lawrence, Ernest Ross Lawrence, Thelma Marie Lawrence, Jesse Murry Lawrence and Paul Haywood Lawrence.2
