Amah's birth date is estimated on her marriage date of 1809 and assuming she was probably between the ages of 18 and 21.
Amah obviously was alive when property was purchased for the support of the heirs of Charles in 1833, but apparently was deceased by 1849 when her share of the property was sold to Lemuel. She may be the female that appears in the 1840 census in the 50-60 age group in the household of Lemuel Lawrence.

Arthur Lawrence, Esq., was seated at Priors Court, Olveston, Gloucestershire. In Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies of England, Ireland, and Scotland, it states that the second son of Sir Robert Lawence and Margaret Holden of Lancashire was Thomas Lawrence who was the father of Arthur Lawrence and that Arthur was the ancestor of John Lawrence, esq., of Delaford in Iver, Bucks, and of Chelsea, Middlesex, who was created a Baronet in 1628.3
In Miscellaneous Pedigrees for Gloucestshire 1623, Arthur was listed as the father of Savacre Lawrence and Savacre was indicated as Arthur's second son.4
The ancestors of John Lawrence, esq. of Delaford in Iver, Bucks, and of Chelsea, Middlesex, are Thomas who married Martha Cage who was the son of Thomas of Chelsea who was the son of another Thomas. This last Thomas would appear then to have been a son of Arthur.

Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr.
Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr. was listed as a son at age 7, born in Tennessee, in the household of Carl Greenville Lawrence [Sr.] in First Civil District, Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1910 enumerated 28 April 1910.4
Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr. was listed as a son at age 7 (age incorrect), born in Tennessee, in the household of Carl Greenville Lawrence [Sr.] in 11th Civil District, Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1920 enumerated 2 January 1920.3
Carl Jr. was born in 1903 in Nashville, Tennessee, and can be found with his parents on the 1910 and 1920 U. S. Census in Nashville. It appears that sometime in the early 1920s he moved to Detroit, Michigan, for awhile. He may have stayed with his aunt Lessie Smith, her husband John Wise Smith, and their family. The Smith family was listed on the 1920 U. S. Census as residing in Detroit, Wayne Co. In an interview with their oldest son, Earl Lawrence Smith, in the late 1990s Earl related remembering Carl walking down railroad tracks in Detroit playing the saxaphone.
By 1924, Carl Jr. was in Georgia where he probably met and married Kathleen Harr. Sometime between 1921 and 1923, his father had moved the family from Nashville to Cobb Co., Georgia. Kathleen, whose mother had died in 1913 was partially raised by her mother's sister Della Matthiessen who was listed in the 1920 U. S. Census as residing in Lemons, Cobb Co., Georgia. Kathleen probably was living there when she met Carl Jr. Carl considered Paul Matthiesen, the eldest son of Della and Jacob (Jake) Matthieson, as one of his favorite friends.
In the Census of 1930, enumerated 2 April 1930, Carl Greenville Lawrence Jr. was listed as head of household in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama. He was listed at age 27, occupation as a photo engraver, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Kathleen Amanda Lawrence and Jessie Louise Lawrence.2
Carl apparently moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a short period of time after the marriage as that is where his eldest child, Jessie Louise, was born in 1928. Knoxville was the home of the father and step-mother of his wife Kathleen. By 1930, however they had moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where his father was now living and was listed on the 1930 U. S. Census as a photo-engraver at a newspaper office. I believe that he and his father, who also was a photo-engraver, were probably working at the same newspaper office in Birmingham. There is a photo of them and several other employees at a dinner which is undated but I believe may have been some of the staff of the newspaper.
About 1934, Carl and family moved to Springfield, Ohio. In 1936 they moved 1111 Broadway Street in Springfield where they lived when their son Paul was born in 1937. At the time Carl was employed at the newspaper as a photo-engraver. According to their daughter Jessie, Carl, at some time while living in Springfield, tried to go into business for himself but was unsuccessful.
Among their neighbors on Broadway were the Currys who lived two houses up and had a daughter Sandra who was about the age of their son Paul. Next the the Currys were Ralph and Hazel Nelson with their son David who was about the age of their daughter Jessie and next to the Nelsons were the Robeys. For awhile Carl's sister Thelma, her husband James Newsome, and their family lived a few houses further up on Broadway. The Newsomes were living in Springfield when their son James Jr. was born in 1941.
During World War II, Carl was an Air Raid Warden for the neighborhood on Broadway. Whenever there was an air raid warning it was his duty to go out and check the neighborhood to make sure no lights were visable from any of the homes. This was a periodic exercise during the War to prepare for the event of an air attack by the enemy. I doubt that even if enemy planes were able to reach the United States that any would ever reach as far inland as Springfield.
Sometime after June 1945, the family moved to Southern Avenue in Springfield. In the fall of 1945 the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where they initially lived at 112 North 61st Street, near the parents of Carl. By the fall of 1946 they had moved to Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1947 Carl and Kathleen divorced. Carl moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kathleen and the kids remained in Nashville. About 1948, Paul went to Cincinnati to join his father who had remarried. Jessie remained in Nashville where she had graduated from high school and was employed.
Carl and his second wife separated about 1949 and he later reunited with Kathleen in Cincinnati. They moved to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1950, returning to Cincinnati in 1951. In late 1953 or early 1954 the family moved to Dayton, Ohio.
In early 1955, Kathleen suffered a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized. Carl took a job in Charlotte, North Carolina. Paul, who was senior in high school and was employed, did not want to move to Charlotte so he remained in Dayton to finish his senior year.
Carl died in November of 1955 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Carl Greenville Lawrence Sr. ca. 1902
Carl owned his own engraving company in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.
Carl married Jessie Kidder Harper in 1902. Family tradition says they had a Gretna Green wedding (eloped). Their first child, Carl Jr., was born in 1903. On the 1910 U. S. Census they were living in Nashville at 519 Eleventh Street South and Carl was working as an engraver for a newspaper. Their residence as about a block over from where his parents lived on Twelfth Street.
On the 1920 U. S. Census Carl is listed in the 11th Civil District and no street address is given. The following census pages listed addresses on Eleventh Avenue so it may well be that Carl was still living on Eleventh Avenue also. His occupation is listed as a photo-engraver for a printing company. Jessie, his wife, was listed with an occupation of clerk in a drug store. The ages of Carl's children on the 1920 U. S. Census are all incorrect. Actually the ages are off by one line. If you take Carl Jr. and move him to the top of the list of children as he is the oldest, leaving the ages on the lines recorded and moving all other children down one line then the children and ages match.
Sometime between September 1921 and March 1924, Carl moved the family to Cobb County, Georgia. His son Paul Haywood was born in Nashville on 23 September 1921 and their youngest son and last child was born on 10 March 1924 in Smyrna, Cobb Co., Georgia.
By 1930, the family had moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where they are listed on the census at 115 61st Street. His occupation is listed as an engraver-photograph. It's my understanding that he work for a newspaper but later ran his own photo-engraving company. I believe this is the residence where they lived for most of the rest of their lifes and where he was living on my visits as a young child. I can remember dinners there that included several of his children and grandchildren. The adults ate at the dining room table while all of the grandchildren ate in another room supervised by my sister, Jessie Lou Lawrence, who was the oldest of all of the cousins.
Carl's wife, Jessie, died from cancer in 1948. By the time of his death in 1966, Carl was living with his daughter Louise Attison in Trussville, Alabama, and was blind.

Charles Lawrence was probably born in Southampton Co., Virginia, say 1761. He married Elizabeth Daughtrey, daughter of Jesse Daughtrey and Unknown ?, say 1786 probably in North Carolina. The marriage date is based on the analysis of the 1787 North Carolina Census.. Charles died after 8 December 1806 in Sumner Co., Tennessee.1
Charles was probably born in Virginia before his father Charles and mother Amey sold their land in 1770.
Apparently when Charles came to Sumner Co., Tennessee, he did not purchase land but lived with his brother John. Charles first appears on the 1798 Sumner Co. tax list immediately after John Lawrence. He also appears on the 1799 Sumner Co. tax list after John Lawrence. On the 1799 tax list John is listed with 200 acres "on Cumberland River" while Charles is listed with no acres.
Recorded in the January 1801 Term Sumner County Court Minutes: The last will and testament of James Chapman decd. is exhibited in court and proved by the oath of Charlees Lawrence a subscribing witness thereto who also made oath that Thos. Campbell another subscribing witness to the testament subscribed his name in the presence of the said Lawrence ___ at the sametime Martha Chapman & Alexander Chapman Executrix & Executer therein named appeared in court & qualified as executrix & executor to the said will and testament.2
Land to support his family is not purchased until 4 November 1833, when land is purchased per instructions of the will of Charles Lawrence for his heirs by Robert Lawrence, executor of the will of Charles Lawrence. At this time, for the sum of $200, a tract of land containing 50 acres on the waters of Sinking Creek is purchased from Richard Vincent of Warren County. This land is described as the same tract of land Richard Vincent conveyed to Elizabeth Lawrence during her widowhood.3 Evidently the land was conveyed to Elizabeth after Charles' death for her and her childrens use, but was not purchased until 1833.
Later transactions involving this tract of land establishes the children of Charles and Elizabeth that were living at the time of the purchase in 1833. Amah Lawrence (a daughter of Charles) married John Moss in Sumner Co. and had two daughters, Mary Jane born circa 1814 who married Joseph C. Johnson, and Emmaliza (Eliza) born circa 1816 who married Anderson Kirkpatrick. On 12 January 1849, Robert Lawrence (a son of Charles), Anderson Kirkpatrick and his wife Emmaliza, Joseph C. Johnson and his wife Mary Jane sell to Lemuel Lawrence (another son of Charles) the same tract of land mentioned earlier for the sum of $80.3 It would appear at this time that Amah is deceased and her daughters, Mary Jane and Emmaliza, along with Amah's brother Robert, are selling their share of the property to their Lemuel.
On the 17 December 1850, John and William (two more sons of Charles) sell this same aforementioned tract of land to Lemuel for a sum of $80.3 Again, it appears that John and William are selling their share of the property to their brother Lemuel.
From these transactions, we can establish that there were five heirs of Charles alive when the tract of land was purchased in 1833, Amah, Robert, John, William, and Lemuel. Each of these five would have had a $40 inheritance in the land purchased for $200. Each, the heirs of Amah (who evidently had died prior to 1849), Robert, John, and William sell their shares to their brother Lemuel in 1849 and 1850 for their $40 inheritance.
Lemuel sells this tract of land to Mitchell R. Moore on 5 January 1856, for a sum of $500.
Another possible son of Charles and Elizabeth may be a Charles Lawrence who enlisted as a private in Capt. Sarver's regiment from Sumner Co. in the War of 1812. Among his War of 1812 military records is a power of attorney to Abram Trigg for his wages. Abram Trigg also served as bondsman for the marriage of Amah Lawrence and John Moss. This Charles died in 1815.
Charles made a will on 8 December 1806. Last will and testament of Charles Lawrence: Will:
I constitute. I Charles Larence of Sumner County District of Mero and state of Tennessee being by the providence of God in a weak and low condition of body but in sound mind and memory, do in the presence of Almighty God, constitute this my last will and testament in the following manner, viz, first for as much of my personable property such as can be best spared from the use of my family to be sold and purchase made of as much land for the support of my family as my worthy executors may think fit or sufficient for that purpose which land is to continue for the use of the widow until the children is of age, provided she continues to act the part of a mother till then; at which period if the widow should have married, the land is to be sold this Money equally divided between my legatees. Next as much of my property to be sold as will defray my lawful debts and funeral charges the balance to remain for the use of the widow and children for the conducting of which purpose, I do by these present constitute my worthy Brothers Robert Larence and John Larence my Executors with Betsy my wife, this indenture made this 8th day of December in the year of our Lord 1806. Charles Lawrence was born before 1728.1,2 He married Amey Joyner, daughter of Joseph Joyner and Elizabeth Smelly, circa 1760.3 Charles died after 1800.
Charles was under age when his father made his will in 1743. Therefore if he became of age the following year, the earliest he could have been born would be 1723. In the will of Jeremiah, Charles' uncle, Charles is bequeathed land so he was probably of legal age when that will was made in 1755. Therefore, the latest he could have been born would be 1734. He appears in the 1787 Northampton Co., North Carolina census and is probably in the age group of over 60 on that census which would indicated that he probably was born prior to 1728.
Charles witnessed the will of Joseph Joyner, recorded 8 April 1760.3,4 In that will Joseph names daughter, Amey. This may be the Amey that is named as Charles' wife when he sells his property in Southampton County in 1770. If so, since Amey was not listed as Amey Lawrence in Joseph Joyner's will, they probably married after the death of Joseph Joyner.
As stated above, Charles, in the will of his uncle Jeremiah Lawrence dated 30 November 1755, is bequeath land in Southampton Co., Virginia. On 12 July 1770, Charles and wife Amey sold that land to John Lawrence for £50. The land was described as "being in the County of Southampton on the south side of Black Water it being part of a pattein granted to John Lawrence the sixteenth day of December 1714 Bounded as follows: Beginning in the pattein line where George Lawrance's new line begins as bounds him and thence south __East along that new line to the Cattail Branch then along the said Branch to the Pattain line then along the said ____ distance to joyn the said John Lawrances one land and so along Lawrances Land to the Pattain line then along the Pattain on to the begining it is one hundred & fory acres ... as was given the said Charles Lawrance by his uncle Jeremiah Lawrance."5 I believe the John Lawrence to be Charle's uncle, a brother of Jeremiah who originally gave the land to Charles.
Charles Lawrence next appears in Gates County, North Carolina in the period 1782 through 1785. Gates County was formed in 1779 from Chowan, Hertford, and Perquimans Counties. I believe that this is probably the Charles Lawrence that sold his land in Southampton Co., Virginia in 1770. I have found no other mention of a Charles Lawrence in these counties or surrounding area between 1770 and 1782.
In June 1782, Peter Piland sells deeds land to Joshia Jurdon adjoining that of Charles Lawrence.6 In December 1784, Charles Lawrance deeds to Thomas Brickell for 30 pounds, 50 acres on Bennetts Creek, beginning at white oake, a corner tree adjoining Demsey Fulks land, running across pecosin SW to a Spanish oak on south side of shipyard, then straight to creek and up creek to a bushy top pine near causeway of Bennetts Creek Bridge and along road to corner of said Lawrence's orchard and up road to said Brickell's fence and along his line.6 It appears that at this time, Charles Lawrence may have moved to Northampton County, North Carolina. Recorded in Gates Co. 19 February 1794, is the sale on one negro woman named Sarah, one negro girl named Winney, one negro girl named Rozilla, and one negro girl named Venus to William Baker for 77 pounds, 10 shillings by Charles Lawrence of Northampton Co., NC.6
In 1787 Charles Laurance appears as the head of household in the North Carolina state census in Capt. Horn's District with two white males between 21 and 60 years, three white males under 21 and above 60 years, and two white females all ages. I believe that this is probably the Charles Lawrence from Southampton Co., Virginia and Gates Co. and is probably the father of the Charles Lawrence that married Elizabeth Daughtrey, mentioned in the will of Jesse Daughtrey in 1796. No definitive records have been found to prove this relationship and may never be found due to lost and destroyed records. Likewise, no records contradicting this possibility have been found.
If this relationship is true, the probable family members in that 1787 NC census7 are as follows:
wm 21-60 -- the younger Charles that married Elizabeth Daughtrey
wm 21-60 -- one of the younger Charles' brothers as mentioned in his will in Sumner County, Tennessee, made 8 December 1806, probably John
wm under 21, over 60 -- over 60, the elder Charles whose estimated birth date is between 1723 and 1734, which would indicate that his birth date was probably before 1728
wm under 21, over 60 -- under 21, the other brother of the younger Charles, probably Robert
wm under 21, over 20 -- under 21, possibly the first born of the younger Charles, believed to be the Charles Lawrence that served in the War of 1812 under Capt. Geo. Sarver of Sumner Co., Tennessee, and died 20 February 1815
wf -- Amey, wife of the elder Charles
wf -- Elizabeth, wife of the younger Charles
The marriage date of the younger Charles to Elizabeth Daughtrey is not known other than that they were married when Elizabeth's father made his will in 1796. A daughter of the younger Charles, Amah, married John Moss in 1809. Amah was probably was born by 1790 or earlier, therefore the younger Charles and Elizabeth probably were married by at least 1789 or earlier. If the above analysis of the 1787 NC census is accurate, and the Charles of the War of 1812 was their son, they probably were married at least by 1786.
Charles Lawrence appears on the 1800 U. S. Census in Northampton Co., North Carolina with one female over 45, probably his wife Amey, and one female age 10 to 16, identity unknown. No further records for this Charles have been located.
Charles Lawrence was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Northampton Co., North Carolina. He is enumerated with 1 white male 45 or older, i white female 10-16, and 1 white female 45 or older.8

Charles Lawrence was born say 1787. Charles died I am uncertain about this death date that is from Tennesseans in War of 1812. When looking at the original muster rolls it appears the death date may be referring to the person listed above or below Charles. on 20 February 1815.1
The birth date is estimated based on the analysis of the 1787 North Carolina Census for Charles Lawrence, father of the Charles that married Elizabeth Daughtrey who in turn may be the father of this Charles.
Additionally, I have found a power of attorney from Charles Lawrence to Abram Trigg dated 12 August 1815, which is after the supposed death date, for receiving his wages due upon his discharge from service. Additonally, there is a discharge dated 10 April 1815, for Charles Lawrence, again after the supposed death date.2

David 1996
David was also known as Dave. He graduated from Herndon High School in Herndon, Fairfax Co., Virginia, in May 1978.
One year after graduating from Herndon High School in Virginia, David joined the Air Force, 10 July 1979. After six weeks of basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, he was sent to Keesler AFB, Mississippi for technical training as a Radio Relay Communications Technician. Upon completion of his technical school he was sent to the 2042nd Communications Squadron at Plattsburg AFB, New York. At Plattsburg he assisted with the testing of security systems being developed to protect flightlines and weapon storage areas. After New York he went to Bad Kreuznach, Germany. There he was assigned to the 622nc Tactical Control Flight where he learned about the finer points of camping in the snow and driving 2 1/2-ton trucks while he maintained the mobile microwave and teletype systems. He also won the Airman of the Year award for his unit while stationed there. He was then sent back to Keesler AFB for one of two assignments he would have there. During his first assignment he was assigned as a Technical Training Instructor where he taught several microwave communications 5 and 7 level courses. After 6 years he was then transferred to Kwang Ju, Korea where he was assigned to the 4th Combat Communications Squadron as Noncommissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) of Microwave Maintenance maintaining mobile microwave systems again. During this assignment he was part of the first joint American/Korean microwave link ever tested. One year in Korea was more than enough and he went back to Keesler AFB for his second assignment. This time he was assigned to the 1839th Engineering and Installation Group. Here he spent most of his time installing alternate command post shelters that would be used only during wartime situations. During his tour at Keesler, while on temporary duty to Dyess AFB, Texas, he met and later married the former SSGT Joice Linette Johnson. Soon after they married he was transferred again to Germany, this time stationed in the 52nd Communications Squadron at Spangdahlem AB. At this time Joice decided to separate from the Air Force and join him as a dependent. He was assigned as NCOIC of the Wideband shop, which maintained the Technical Control facility. When his shop was later shut down he was then assigned as Unit Deployment Manager were he assisted in the development of USAFE's Wing Initial Communication Program. During his tour at Spangdahlem, his son Dylan was born at Bitburg AB just down the road from Spangdahlem. In May 1996, MSgt Lawrence was assigned to Kelly AFB and the 668th Logistics Squadron. At this, his last duty assignment, he performed duties as Installation Team Chief, Installation Element Chief, and briefly as Chief of Quality Control for Scheme Engineering. He spent most of his last six months acting as Duty First Sergeant while the primary First Sergeant was deployed.
During his service he received the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with five oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.4

Ashton Hall
Probably built by Edmund Lawrence
Probably built by Edmund Lawrence
In 1534, John Brockholes of Claughton said he heard John Lawrence, a blind man, say that Edmund, his great grandfather married Robert's Washington's daughter and heir. He had married Alice daughter of John de Cuerdale. She died in 1353 and it does not appear that there was any issue.2
Edmund's second wife, Agnes, daughter and heiress of Robert de Washington, Lord of the manor of Scotforth, brought him other lands and also, notably, moities of the manors of Carnforth and Carleton. Edmund had no issue by his first wife, Alice, and the marriage terminated in a divorce.4
Edmund was the second Squire of Ashton. In 1338 he held, with his parents, the Stapleton part of the manor of Ashton for life.5
In 1345, he had been commissioned with his uncle William to investigate wastes in the manor of Wyresdale.4 In 1348, John Franceys dismised certain of this lands, etc., to Edmund for life at the rent of a rose for six years and then 100s. Agnes, the daughter of John Franceys married Lambert de Wyresdale and they quit-claimed to Edmund in 1366.2
In 1350 Edmund held burgages in Pennystreet, Lancaster.5
In 1357 he made a feoffment of lands in Lancaster, Skerton, Ellel, Ashton, and Preeshall2 and in 1373 it was found that he held for life three plough-lands of Thomas de Stapleton by a rent of 20 marks.2 In 1358 he was pardoned, after paying 100 shillings, for acquiring a life interest in the Irish Manors of Baliogary, Lough and Casterling without license.5 Also in 1358 he held land in Preesall.2 In 1361 he was pardoned, for service in France, of taking 200 in silver from John Darcy's house.5
He was Knight of the Shire in 1362 when he and Matthew de Rixton being deputies of the sheriff, concealed the election writ and returned themselves as knights of the shire. This return was later quashed.2
In 1363 was receiver of Queen Philippa's monies in Ireland. In 1367 he was attorney in England for the Prior of St. Mary's, Lancaster. In 1368 he was commissioner of Array to choose 100 archers in Lancashire.5
In 1373 he held for life three plough-lands of Thomas de Stapleton by a rent of 20 marks.2 He was the Stapleton tenant as Scotforth as in Ashton in 1793.2 In 1375 he released his life interest in the Irish Manors and in that of Dunmow.5
In 1376, he held for life fisheries and ridings in Ashton together with a fourth part of the manor, of the heirs of Thomas de Thweng, deceased, by rent of 13s. 4d.2
In 1378 he purchased all the rights of Thomas de Molyneux in the marriage of Richard, son of Sir William de Moylneux of Sefton.2
In 1381/2, evidently shortly before Edmund's death, John de Oxcliffe granted an estate in Overton to Edmund. John de Oxcliffe had held the estate as trustee, given him in 1374, from Adam, son of William de Lancaster, that William held in the right of his wife Blanche.2
Edmund held ten burgages, two messuages, 30 acres of land, etc., by a rent of 6s. 8d. of the duke in free burgage at his death in 1381.2 His son Robert was 10 years old. His will names Agnes his wife, Robert his son and heir, and other children. What holding was retained in Ashton is not clear, but in the reigns of Henry IV and Henry VI certain lands, in later times called 'Lawrence lands,' were demised to the family by the Methams.2 The trustees of Edmund granted to his son John, lands in Skerton and Heysham.2
The Manor of Ashton figures in the Doomsday Book of 1086. However, it is three more centuries beore the first physical evidence of its long history is revealed in the shape of the Pele tower that forms the southern flank of the mondern Lancaster Golf Club Clubhouse. The tower certainly dates from the fourteenth century and was possibly build by Edmund Lawrence who died in 1381. He was a descendant of the first recorded owners of the Manor of Ashton, the family of de Lancastre, barons of Kendal. His wife, Agnes is even more interesting.6
Pele towers were fortified dwellings virtually unique to the Border region with Scotland, intended to protect their occupants against raiding parties moving south in search of booty. They were constructed in a manner to deprive their assailants of any easy means of entry. Their windows were of minimal size, small, rectangular apertures. The original Hall was built according to a standard design, one that was popular with wealthy landowners seeking a secure dwelling place in an insecure world. There were three stories. The ground floor is vaulted to provide stability. It was usually windowless and was used for storage purposes and to shelter the animals. The first floor contained the main hall and kitchen, and the top floor the living and sleeping quarters. The battlemented roof was flat in order to provide a stable lookout form which to launch missiles and fire arrows upon attackers. The four turrets were set diagonally to maximise the chances of scoring direct hits.6

Edmund Lawrence was born in 1439.1 Edmund died on 20 January 1485/86.1 Conflicting evidence states that he died on 20 January 1510.1 Conflicting evidence states that he died in 1515.2
Schuyler Lawrence indicates that Edmund died in 1515.2 According to The Victoria History of Lancashire three inquisitions were taken in 1510, 1513, and 1514 all give Edmund's death as 20 Jan. 1 Henry VIII (1509/10) and state that his daugher Joan afterward married Thomas Lathom, bore him a son Thomas and died 10 June 1509. The Victoria History indicates that perhaps the death date should have been 20 Jan. 1 Henry VII (1485/86). At his death he was holding the manor of Yealand Redmayne of the king as duke as of his manor of Warton by the sixth part of a knight's fee. His daughter Joan was his heir and after her death in 1509, the manor was held by Thomas Lathom until his death in 1515.1
Schyler Lawrence's death date of 1515 is probably incorrect and was confused with the death of Thomas Lathom. Also, since Joan was Edmund's heir and she died in 1509, the correct date of death of Edmund is probably 20 January 1485/85 (1 Henry VII not 1 Henry VIII).
