Bessie A. Harr
According to family tradition, John and Bessie had no children. However, according to the 1910 census, Bessie had one child with none living, so evidently there was one child that died at birth or as an infant.
The death date was found in hand written notes in possession of Edward Hunter Foster, source believed to be his mother Louise Harr.

David Harr was born on 16 June 1820 in Washington Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4 He married first Mary Jane Leonard, daughter of Gasper Leonard and Mary ?, say 1841 probably in Washington Co., Virginia. David married second Mary Ann Leonard on 9 April 1866 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.5 David died between 1887 and 1900 in Lyon Co., Kansas.
David Harr (Jr.) as well as his brothers Adam and Elkanah served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
According to combined Confederate Civil War records located at the National Archives in Washington, D. C., David Harr was enlisted on Sept. 25, 1862, by Maj. J. A. Rhea, in G Company of Crawford's Regiment of the 60th Mounted Infantry for a period of three years. He was listed on company muster rolls Sept. 25, 1862; Nov. 7, 1862; Jan. & Feb. 1963; Mar. & Apr. 1863; and from May 1, 1863, to Apr. 30, 1864 (dated Sept. 10, 1864). He was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, and paroled on July 8, 1863, according to the terms of capitulation entered into by the commanding Generals of the United States and Confederate forces. Under the release condition that David Harr signed, he was "not to take up arms against the United States, nor serve in any military police or constabulary force in any Fort, garrison, or field work held by the Confederate States of America, nor as guard of prisons, depots or stores, nor discharge any duties usually performed by Officers or soldiers, against the United States of America, until duly exchanged by the proper authorities."
He next appeared on a roll dated Aug. 18, 1864, at Zollicoffer, Tennessee, of officers and men who were paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 4, 1863, and who have reported at Zollicoffer, Tennessee, prior to Aug. 15, 1864.
Next David appeared on prisoner of war records at Knoxville, Tennessee, stating that he was captured Dec. 14, 1864, at Sullivan County, Tennessee, and sent to Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dec. 25, 1864. The following prisoner of war records indicate that his capture was at Bristol, Tennessee and follow his captivity through the end of the war: a roll dated Jan. 8, 1865, Nashville, Tennessee, indicated that he was being forwarded to Louisville, Tennessee (believe they meant Kentucky); arrival at Louisville, Kentucky, Jan. 11, 1865; sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, Jan. 14, 1865; paroled at Camp Chase, Ohio and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, Feb. 17, 1865, for exchange; and finally appears on a Hospital Muster Roll (not dated, but with an indication that he was paid March 6, 1865 and that he had last been paid May 1, 1864) at the 5th Division, General Hospital Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia.6
His first wife, Mary Jane, died July 27, 1865, evidently either before he returned home or shortly thereafter. The marriage record for his first marriage has never been found. He married his second wife, Mary Ann Leonard, on Apr. 9, 1866, in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Mary Ann, maiden name unknown, evidently had been married to a Leonard and had a small child named Able whom she brought into the marriage to David.
David Harr and family moved to Jackson Township, Lyon Co., Kansas, in about 1871. In August of 1871, his son Raleigh and step-son Able drowned in the Neosho River. His son Edward Hunter married in Emporia, Kansas in 1874.
David eventually became a merchant in Neosho Rapids, Kansas. The following appeared in the Neosho Valley Press, Jan. 20, 1887 - Uncle David Harr has just received several tons of Topeka flour and can supply you with the best the market affords at from $1.10 to $1.50 per sack. He endeavors to keep at all times a full supply of beef, pork, lard, sausage, butter and everything usually found in a well regulated meat market and at prices to suit the times. Give him your trade in the above articles.
In the Township Clerk's book, Jackson Township, Lyon County, Kansas, David was granted a license to run a pool table on Lot (12) Block (33) in the town of Neosho Rapids for a term of one year, for payment of $50, on 14th day of May 1886. The license was again granted for a term of one year from June 1, 1887, upon payment of the sum of fifty dollars.
From the above it would appear that David died sometime between 1887 and 1900. On the 1900 U. S. Census for Lyon Co., Kansas, his wife Mary was listed as a widow. His youngest child also was born in 1887.
In the Census of 1850, enumerated 30 September 1850, David Harr was listed as a head of household in Washington Co., Virginia. He was listed at age 28, occupation as a farmer with property value of $400, born in Virginia.. Also enumerated in the household: Mary Jane Harr, Robert D. Harr, William Harr and Edward Hunter Harr.2
In the Census of 1860, enumerated 13 July 1860, David Harr was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 37, occupation as a carpenter, with real estate value of $1000 and personal property value of $400, born in Virginia.. Also enumerated in the household: Mary Jane Harr, Robert D. Harr, William Harr, Edward Hunter Harr, Elizabeth A. Harr, David E. Harr, John Ensor Harr and Raleigh W. Harr.4
In the Census of 1870, enumerated 14 June 1870, David Harr was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 50, occupation as a farmer, with real estate value of $1200 and personal property value of $800, born in Virginia.. Also enumerated in the household: Mary Ann Harr, William Harr, Edward Hunter Harr, Elizabeth A. Harr, John Ensor Harr, Raleigh W. Harr, Able J. Leonard, Virginia E. Harr and Martha A. Harr.3 David was a farmer in 1870 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.
In the Census of 1880, enumerated 11 June 1880, David Harr was listed as head of household in Jackson, Lyon Co., Kansas. He was listed at age 59, occupation as a farmer, born in Virginia. Also enumerated in the household: Mary Ann Harr, Virginia E. Harr, Martha A. Harr, Charles Harr, George F. Harr and Adda B. Harr.7 In 1880 David was a farmer in Lyon Co., Kansas. David was a merchant in Lyon Co., Kansas, circa 1887.

Carothers-Harr-Wilson House
David was a son of Simon by his second wife, Eve Printzler (maiden name Beard or Bare). He may have been the youngest son of Simon. Being born in 1777 he would have been about age 19 or 20 when Simon died in 1797.
The first record of David in Shenandoah can be found in May of 1799 when Frederick, John, and David dispose of the property of their father Simon who died intestate.6 On 9 June of 1799, David used two lots in the town of Woodstock, known as nos. 43 and 86, conveyed to him by Frederick Heiskill and Catherine his wife by deed on 6th April 1799 (have not found that deed) to secure payment of 38 pounds 2 shillings and eight pence owed to Abraham Brubaker, Sen., in consideration of one dollar.6
On 31 December 1800, it was recorded that David "hath fairly and honestly paid unto said Abraham Brubaker, Senr. the sum of 38 pounds 2 shillings and eight pence with lawful interest thereon" and Abraham Brubaker junr. [sic] "hath released and forever quit claim the aforesaid moiety of two inn lots of land", witnessed by Dan Lee, Adam Derting, and John Effinger.6 Also on that date, 31 December 1800, David used those two lots, nos. 43 and 86 in the town of Woodstock, to secure payment of 110 pounds, eleven shillings which he justly owed to Nicholas Keffer of the town of Woodstock, also witnessed by Dan Lee, John Effinger, and Adam Derting.6
On 18 February 1801, David Harr of the County of Shenandoah, sold to David Rodeheffer Junior and John Rodeheffer, sadler of same county, for consideration of 210 pounds, two lots in the town of Woodstock, known as nos. 43 and 86, containing one half acre of land, being the same lots conveyed to David Harr the 26th of April 1799 by Frederick Heiskill and Catherine his wife, witnessed by George Lind, William Gilham, Alexander Pollock, George Hoffman, and John Lee.6 Evidently David had clear the debt owed to Nicholas Keffer before this sale or used the proceeds of this sale to do so.
On 8 January 1803, Nicholas Keffer and Polly his wife of the town of Woodstock, County of Shenandoah sold to David Harr of same place, in consideration of 160 pounds, two certain lots of land lying and being in the town of Woodstock containing an estimation half acre of land each and known as nos. 104 and 153, on the Main Street of the said town, adjoining the lots of George Swartz and Jacob Longanacre being the same lots conveyed to Nicholas Keffer on the (unreadable) day of April 1802, witnessed by Jacob Ott, Henry Bline, and John Lee.6 Later that year, 14 October 1803, David sold these two lots, nos. 104 and 153 in the town of Woodstock, to John Rodefeffer for the consideration of 200 pounds, witnessed by Ulrick Miller, Mar Hupp, and Joseph Miller.6
On 28 November 1803, David Harr of the County of Shenandoah sold to Nicholas Keffer of the same County, for the consideration of 28 pounds, one moiety (half) of a certain lot in the town of Woodstock known by number 43, it being the moiety of the said lot which was conveyed to said David Harr by Frederick Heiskill and Catharine his wife by their deed the 26th of April 1799, witnessed by Jacob Ott, John Effinger, and George Hoffman.6 This same lot had been sold by David to David and John Rodeheffer on 18 February 1801. Evidently he had only sold half of lot 43 to David and John Rodeheffer.
On 8 April 1805, the following was recorded: Between Samuel Bear of County of Shenandoah to John Rodeheffer of the same county, whereas by certain indenture the 11 October 1803 between David Harr and Samuel Bear as trustee for said David Harr and James Anderson said David Harr did grant unto me one certain lot in the town of Woodstock known by the number 154 and two lots in absolute fee to said John Rodeheffer and I do declare that my name was used in the first above mentioned, This Indenture Witnesseth that I Samuel Bear discharge the trust at the request of John Rodeheffer.7 This appears to be the last mention of David Harr in the County of Shenandoah.
David along with his half brother, John, moved from Shenandoah Co., VA to Sullivan County, Tennessee, probably in 1806-1808 settling in the area northwest of Blountville, TN, in the vincinity of Immanual Lutheran Church on the Old Reedy Creek Road, presently near the intersection of road #37 and U. S. Highway 11-W.
David may initially lived in Washington County, Virginia when he moved to the area. He was unmarried at the time and later married Mary Ann Leonard, daughter of Frederick Leonard of Washington County. In Washington County records there are records of a Henry Briscoe defending against all claims land with the appurtenances thereunto belonging to Susan Hickman in June 1843. Susan Hickman, the widow of Peter Hickman, Jr., was the daughter of Daniel Troxell. The records mentioned that this 8 1/2 acres was formally sold by David Harr to Daniel Troxell on June 21, 1825.8 Also, David was listed as a member of the Washington County Militia in Capt. Goodson's Company, 2nd Battalion, 105th Regiment in 1807, and in Capt. Goff's Company in 1809 and 1812.9
David's middle initial of H. is based on a listing on the Sullivan County, Tennessee 1837 tax list for District No. 5, Blountville and Surrounding Community. He was listed as David H. Harr with 116 acres having a value of $406.3
This land was purchased from Robert Rhea in 1836. The tract included a house originally build by John Carothers in the late 1700s. In 1847, David Harr sold the house he had lived in near the big spring (not the Carothers house) to his son Adam, for a "valuable consideration" which was that Adam would maintain David and his wife, Mary, as long as they lived. In addition, Adam was to pay James Harr "when he is twenty-one years of age a good young horse beast saddle & briddle worth sixty dollars." David sold the Carothers House and 66 acres to his son Elkanah Harr the same day of the sale to Adam.
Elkanah sold 163 acres with the house to Robert E. Wolfe in 1898. In 1902, Wolfe sold the house and 25 acres to Nannie V. Rhea (wife of J. E. Rhea). Two years later she sold to Dr. W. A. Miller who sold to M. B. Wilson within a year. M. B. Wilson added to the property through the purchase of Martha A. Harr's interest in the estate of her father, Adam Harr.
Wilson died in 1907 from Pneumonia and in 1917, when the Wilson estate was partitioned by the court, it consisted of a little more than 116 acres. The partioning gave Mrs. Wilson the homestead tract of two acres and 136 poles and a 30-acre dower tract. She also received from Adam Harr's estate a 12-acre tract that joined the dower and homestead tracts. Henry Wilson received 26½ acres just east of the dower tract whild the land east of Henry's was subdivided in 28¾ acres each for Laurie Wilson Snapp and Dolly Wilson Anderson.
Henry was the son of M. B. Wilson and Annie Catherine Harr Wilson and the grandson of Adam Harr. Later, Henry bought the interests of Laurie and Dolly in the dower and homestead tract. When Henry married Bessie Christina Snodgrass, he and his wife continue to live with Mrs. Wilson until her death in 1951. On October 20, 1922, Annie Catherine and Henry Wilson sold "a piece of ground twenty-five feet square around what is known as the 'Old Harr Spring'" to Sullivan County. It was from this spring and the nearby C. V. Stoat spring that water was first piped to the town of Blountville. The house is located on Highway 37, just north of I-81.3
Three of David Harr's sons, David, Elkanah, and Adam served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. It is suspected that David and Mary may have died during the early 1860s while their sons David, Elkanah, and Adam were away at war and that they may have been buried in unmarked graves on the Harr property.
David was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Enumerated were:
1 white male under 5, probably Adam P. Harr
2 white males 5 to 10, probably Elkanah Dulaney Harr and David Harr

Edward Hunter Harr
Edward Hunter Harr married Columbia (Lummie) Byerly in Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas, at the residence of R. L. Dishner. Robert L. Dishner's wife, Elizabeth, was a sister of Lummie. Edward's father, David, had moved his family to Kansas in 1871. Columbia's father, John Byerly, also moved from Tennessee to Kansas but not until 1880 according to John's obituary. Columbia may have been in Kansas visiting some relatives when she married Edward or may have come to Kansas for the specific purpose of marrying Edward. Edward and Columbia may have known each other before Edward's family moved to Kansas since the Harr and Byerly families had lived in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, during the same time period.
Edward returned to Tennessee moving to Washington Co. prior to 1880. On the U. S. Census of 1880 Edward's brothers John and William are listed in his household. Edward Harr served as Worshipful Master for the Masonic Lodge in Johnson City, Tennessee. His picture hangs on the Wall of former Masters.
Edward Hunter Harr apparently died from typhoid fever shortly after being elected sheriff in 1884. Family tradition has that, as a widow, Lummie supported herself and her children after Edward's death by taking in sewing.
Edward Hunter Harr was listed at age 2, born in Virginia, as a member of the household of David Harr in Washington Co., Virginia, in the Census of 1850, enumerated 30 September 1850.2
Edward Hunter Harr was listed at age 12, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of David Harr in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1860, enumerated 13 July 1860.3
Edward Hunter Harr was listed at age 22, born in Virginia, as a member of the household of David Harr in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1870, enumerated 14 June 1870.4
In the Census of 1880, enumerated 1 June 1880, Edward Hunter Harr was listed as head of household in Washington Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 32, occupation as a merchant, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Columbia Caroline Harr, Robert Hunter Harr, William Harr, John Ensor Harr and Adelia N. J. Byerly.5
The following is a transcription from the Johnson City, Tennessee Comet.
Sheriff elect, Ed. H. Harr, is very low with typhoid fever. A host of friends are shuddering to see this exceptionally good man so near unto death. There is hope that he may be spared to raise his precious children and to still bless the community with his noble deeds and pure life.9
Edward Hunter Harr died on that date according to the tombstone inscription. Two other related articles appeared in the Johnson City Comet.
The first: The county court will elect sheriff to fill vacancy caused by death of Mr. Ed. Harr.
The second: John Eakin for the Masonic Lodge at this place made arrangements with the railroad authorities for the midnight train to stop Sunday night at Union and take on the men who went from this place to the burying of Mr. Harr in Sullivan County. Twenty three of the number waited until 2 a. m. for the train. The train came and went rushing by leaving the men to wait for the morning train.10

Elkanah Dulaney Harr was born on 2 November 1823 in Washington Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 He married first Louisa Smith on 3 June 1847 in Washington Co., Virginia.9 He married second Nancy Ann Martha Humphreys on 15 August 1900 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.10 Elkanah died on 15 March 1907 in Blountville, Sullivan Co., Tennessee, at age 83.2 He was interred circa March 1907 in Harr/Wilson Cemetery in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.2
Elkanah and Louisa were married by Rev. William Hancher. Elkanah and Mattie were married by Rev. W. G. Wolford.
Elkanah's father David purchased 116 acres of land from Robert Rhea in 1836. David sold the Carothers House and 66 acres to his son Elkanah Harr the same day of the sale to Adam. The house is located on Highway 37, just north of I-81.1
Elkanah, as well as his brothers David (Jr.) and Adam, served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
The combined Confederate Civil War records at the National Archives, Washington, D. C., indicate that E. D. Harr was enlisted by Capt. Millard in Co. F of the 63rd Regiment Tennessee Infantry, for three years on Feb. 23, 1863. He appears on muster rolls for Mar. and Apr. 1863, May and June 1863, July and Aug. 1863, and Sept. and Oct. 1863. On the muster roll for Nov. & Dec. 1863 it is indicated that he is absent and sick in the hospital at Kingston, Georgia having been sent there by order of the regiment surgeon on Oct. 10, 1863. On the muster of Jan. and Feb. 1864, it is indicated that he is at home upon the surgeon's certificate of disability.11
He apparently returns and appears on a muster roll dated Apr. 6, 1864. On the muster roll for May and June 1864, it is indicated that E. D. Harr was captured at Drury's Bluff on May 16, 1864. He then appears absent on rolls for July and Aug. 1864, Sept. and Oct. 1864, and Nov. and Dec. 1864.
Prisoner of War records show that he was turned over to the Assistant Provost Marshal at Ft. Monroe, Virginia, on May 17, 1864. He was then forwarded to Point Lookout, Maryland on May 18, 1864, and subsequently exchanged on Nov. 1, 1864.
It apppears that Elkanah was enumerated twice in the U. S. Census of 1900, first in the household of his son John B. Harr and nine days later in the household of his son William Deery Harr.
In the Census of 1850, enumerated 30 August 1850, Elkanah Dulaney Harr was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 26, occupation as a carpenter with property value of $300, born in Virginia.. Also enumerated in the household: Louisa Harr.4

Elkanah and Louisa were married by Rev. William Hancher. Elkanah and Mattie were married by Rev. W. G. Wolford.
Elkanah's father David purchased 116 acres of land from Robert Rhea in 1836. David sold the Carothers House and 66 acres to his son Elkanah Harr the same day of the sale to Adam.

Frederick Harr was born on 4 April 1760 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia, on Good Friday morning at 10 o'clock.1,2 He married Frances Funk on 22 January 1786 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia.3,4 Frederick died circa 1820 in Augusta Co., Virginia.1 He was interred circa 1820 in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Augusta Co., Virginia.1
It has commonly been believed that Frederick Harr and his wife moved to the Fairmont area of Marion County, Virginia/West Virginia. A son Henry, was born March 26, 1793, who had a son David Porter Harr. Henry moved to Pennsylvania and thereafter David and other descendants lived in Pennsylvania.5 However, when Simon's property was sold after his death by his sons Frederick, John, and David, Frederick is listed as being in Augusta County, Virginia. A cemetery record in the Riverheads District of southern Augusta County, Virginia, contains tombstone inscriptions with the born-died information for a Frederick and Frances Harr. This is probably the same Frederick Harr and his wife Ferney Funk. Perhaps, after going to Marion County, they moved to Augusta County. However, the birth date from the tombstone differs from the date of 1765 in Alfred Droke's report but is close enough that this could be the same Frederick Harr. The source of the birth date given by Alfred Droke is not known.
Also, buried beside Frederick and Frances, is a William Harr, d. Aug. 1, 1819, at age 6 years, 6 months, and 10 days. This is probably another son of Frederick and Franey.
