FITCH, REVEREND (THOMAS4, GEORGE3, ROGER2, THOMAS1) was
born December 24, 1622 in Essex County, England, and died November
19, 1702 in Lebanon. He married (1) ABIGAIL WHITFIELD October 1648
in Guilford, CT, daughter of HENRY WHITFIELD, REVEREND. She died
September 09, 1659 in Saybrook. He married (2) PRISCILLA MASON October
1664, daughter of JOHN MASON, CAPT.. She was born October 1641.

FITCH, REVEREND:
Prepared
for ministry under Reverend Hooker and Reverend Stone of Hartford,
CT. He removed to Norwich in 1660 with a large part of his congregation
and continued there until 1696 when he retired and removed to
Lebanon, where he died. A number of his sermons have been published.
He was a man eminent for his piety and good works. He spent some
years as a missionary to the Indians who thought much of him,
showing their friendship and love to him in many ways. Chief Owanech
granted to him and to Major Mason a tract of land five miles long
and one mile wide, upon which he founded the town of Lebanon,
CT. He gave the town this name because of cedars growing upon
the hillside. He also helped found Saybrook and his wife's father,
the Reverend Whitfield (who was a prominent minister of the Church
of England) helped in the founding of Guiliford, CT. More About
