resided BEF 1818 in Stewart County, Tennessee

emigrated 1818 to Jackson, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana

Information furnished by Joyce Bradford, husband of George Bradford, son of Willie, son of Benjamin, son of David, son of Green Hill

From Hiram:  "Major Green H. Bradford was of a daring spirit and fond of adventure, not satisfied with confronting the Indians who were very savage, around about us, in those days--he prevailed on my father to let him go South with a friend soon after settling on Cumberland, and was absent about seven years in what was in those times parts almost unknown, then West Florida, now State of Lousiana.

He returned -- - -(four words illegible), with a wife and child, having married Betsey Robinson on (parrish illegible), about 30 miles of Madison on Lake Penchartrain.  He made frequent trading trips afterwards to that region of country and afterward, in company with myself, finally moved there, lived in the Parish of East Feliciana, finally settled in St. Mollena and died there about the year 1840.  His sons were Thomas Benjamin, who died when nearly grown.  Also, James, Hiram and David.  His daughters were Matilda, Roena and Carolina.  These are all I know of. His widow married and went to Red River, and I suppose the children followed."

Also attended University of North Carolina.  Began spelling Siler, SYLER while at University of NC. Persuaded his brothers to do likewise.  His father never consented and refused mail sent to him if spelled with a Y. From 1878 to 1886 he was Franklin County Surveyor.  His home still stands on Hwy 50 (Lynchburg/Winchester highway).  It is a red brick, two story colonial home, the last house on the right coming out of Winchester toward Lynchburg before you cross the TVA bridge build over the Tims Ford Lake.

The Turner Cemetery, where both of his wives and a young daughter were buried,  is near the same bridge.

When his 2nd wife, Susan Mann (sister to his 1st wife) died, he and his two young sons, Walter Scott and Mathew Mann went to Texas and taught school in Hayes and Travis counties.

[GOODSPEED'S BIOGRAPHICAL APPENDIX - FRANKLIN COUNTY]

JOHN W. SYLER, the surveyor of Franklin County, was born April 23, 1825, in this county, being a son of Jacob and Jane (Thompson) Syler, natives of Franklin County, Tenn., and North Carolina, respectively. The grandfather was John Syler, who came from Rockbridge County, VA, in 1812, and settled in the west part of this county. Here he reared his family, all the Sylers of the county being descendants of his. Jacob Syler, like his father, was a farmer, a man of ordinary means. The mother came from her native State to this county when young and lived all her remaining life in Franklin County. John W. Syler, the subject of this sketch, was reared on a farm. He attended and graduated from the Davidson College, of North Carolina, and then entered the profession of teaching. For about ten years he was professor of mathematics, languages and science in the Robert Donald College, at Winchester, Tenn. He then taught the Carrick Academy, of Winchester, for many years, being engaged in the profession of teaching altogether about twenty years. He has also carried on farming all the time since he was a young man. He now owns about 10,000 acres of wild land. He has been superintendent of public instruction in this county for many years. In 1878 he was elected county surveyor of Franklin County, and now holds that office. From 1869 to 1872 he was engaged in merchandising. He was married, in 1853, to Miss E. V. Mann, the fruits of this union being ten children, eight of whom are now living, and six of whom are grown, viz.: Mollie L. (wife of Peter Weir, of Texas), J. F., Annie V. (wife of Fred Heep, of Texas), Bettie J. (wife of J. C. Arledge), John T., Emma, Walter S. and M. R. Mr. Syler is a Blue Lodge Mason.  Politically he is a firm Democrat.

Notes for Robert William Syler:

[Syler.FTW]

ENLISTED IN CO. F OF THE 1ST REG. OF TENN. VOL. ON THE 24TH DAY OF APRIL 1861. HE WAS 34 YEARS OLD, 5'10", FAIR COMPLECTION, GREY EYES, LIGHT HAIR. DISCHARGED FEB 12, 1862 FOR DISABILITY. Robert William, son of Jacob & Jane Thompson Siler, was born in Franklin county.  Married Elizabeth Ann Pearson, in Franklin County, TN by Justice of the Peace, G. W. Bowling.  It was in the town of Salem, or possibly a few miles from there in the area of Lexie Crossroads, where the Siler homestead was located, that they were married and lived.  The Federal census records list them at Salem, also, Ann's family, her mother Darcus Pearson, who's family descended from the Quaker immigrants, Bartholomew Stovall and Ann Burton Stovall.  Their son John Stovall and Dorcas, his wife, their son George Stovall and Elizabeth Staples, who were the mother and father of Darcus Pearson. Darcus Pearson was 50 years of age in 1870 census and Ann's brother, Kindred was 18.  The 1860 census lists Robert and Ann as age 34 & 24 and two of their three children, Martha, age 5 and Mary age 1.  Robert,Sr's father, Jacob Siler, died prior to 1852, when the oldest son, John Wesley Syler, was appointed guardian of their younger brothers and sisters, at the December Term of County Court in 1852. Alfred Henderson and Arthur St. Clair Colyar were his securities.  Colyar was quite a politician and several times ran for governor of the state of Tennessee, loosing each time. Apparently Jacob's second wife, Louise, did not want the responsibility of rearing the children of Jacob Siler, and in the January Term of Court in 1853, she petitioned for her dower, which was laid off.

There were a few years of happiness for the young couple, another child, Robert William, was born on Nov 20, 1860.  Already there were rumbeling of the impending conflicts to come.  It was the election of Lincoln which immediately posed the question of "Union or Confederate, "in every village of the state.  Though Tennessee was at first basically pro-union, Franlin County took action late in 1860 to show which way she leaned, regardless of the state.  At a great "Mass Meeting" at Winchester, speeches were delivered by such leaders as Miller Turney, A. S. Colyar, H. T. Carr, Dr. B.W. Childs and others.  H. T. Carr submitted the following resolution which expressed a sentiment rapidly growing in the state, although no action was taken:  "Be it resolved: that it is the sense of this meeting that in the event that any one of the Southern States, or more, should, under the grievous wrong now pressed upon them by the Sectional States of the North, secede from the union, we hold it to be our duty to sympathise with, aid and assist our Southern brethern, if an attempt is made to coerce them into submission."

(McKellar, Chuwalee P 117).

Notes for Thomas Jefferson Syler:

[Syler.FTW]

His parents died when he was small and he lived with his Grandmother. After finishing High School, rather than go to college as his brother JOHN WESLEY SYLER intended, he ran away at the age of 19, and went to Winchester, TX.  It is not known how long it took him to make the trip. He wagoned and worked on farms and with cattle.  He met and married Caroline Chandler of Jefferson County Missouri, Mar 26, 1861 in Fayette County Texas.  When the war was declared, he went.  His company is not known as all the records were destroyed by fire when the old Syler home burned in 1906.  At the close of the war, he was stationed on the Rio Grande near Brownsville, TX and he went into Mexico and worked several months before returning home, as the government was unable to pay the soldiers, and he had a wife and two children at home to support. After coming home with several hundred dollars, because they paid well in Mexico, he bought 500 acres of land on Pinoak Creek near the old Blackwell's Gin, called at that time Bethany Post Office.  He built a house of logs, a story and half high, with shed rooms and a long front porch.  They planted an orchard, farmed and raised cattle, sheep and horses, and made a comfortable living. They took an interest in all community affairs.  He served as school trustee a number of times.  He spent his entire life in Fayette County after coming to TX and never moved after they settled at the close of the war.  He was the father of ten children, three died in infancy, and the eldest son John Wesley died in OK in 1914, where the family still resided in 1926.

Florence, the youngest child wrote years later that her mother and father were great home lovers.  They had a splendid orchard with lots of fruit and a beautiful flower garden.  She said she was told by several old friends after her mother's death that the Syler yard was the most beautiful there was in the whole county.  Most every kind of shrub and flower was in the yard.  Florence was eight years old at the time of her mother's death, but she could still remember years later how they would spend days cutting peaches to dry and preserve, and they never grew away from the customary ways of doing things.

The old home place was still in the family in 1926, belonging to Clem A. Syler. While Mrs. Syler still lived they held an old Hard Shell Baptist Association meeting at the home with a large crowd in attendance.  Mr. & Mrs. Syler were Methodists but took part in all religious affairs.

Notes for George Washington Syler:

[Syler.FTW]

Son of JACOB SILER, Was 2 months old when his mother died and 12 years old when his father died. No information on who he lived with.  One of his older brothers, THOMAS JEFFERSON SYLER, was living with his grandmother. JOHN W. SYLER was appointed guardian to the younger children of his stepmother and Dad and were listed in the December 1852 Term of County Court, Franklin County Court Records. ALFRED HENDERSON and ARTHUR St. CLAIR COLYAR were his securities. COLYAR was quite a politician and several times ran for governor of the state of Tennessee, losing each time. Apparently JACOB' s second wife, LOUISE, did not want the responsibility of rearing the children of JACOB SILER and in the January term of Court in 1853 , she petitioned for her dower, which was laid off. In 1860 there were rumbleings of the impending conflicts to come. It was the election of Lincoln which immediately posed the question of "Union or Confederate," in every village of the state.  Though Tennessee was at first basically pro-union, Franklin county took action late in 1860 to show which way she leaned regardless of the state. At a great "Mass Meeting" at Winchester, speaches were delivered  by such leaders as MILLER TURNEY, A.S. COLYAR, H.T. CARR, Dr. B.W. CHILDS and others. H.T. CARR submitted the following resolution which expressed a sentiment rapidly growing in the State, athough no action was actually taken: "Be it resolved: That it is the sense of this meeting that in the event that any one of the southern states, or more, should, under the grievous wrong now pressed upon them by the secitonal states of the north, secede from the Union, We hold it to be our duty to  sympathize with, aid and assist our southern brethern, if an attempt is made to coerce them into submission." (MCKELLAR, CHUWALEE P 117)

On Dec. 6, 1860, ISOM G. HARRIS called for a special session of the legislature to be held Januaryu 7, 1861, to consider the present condition  of the country. It was determined that the calling of a convention would be submitted to the people in the form of a Referendum, since Harris felt that those people now serving in the legislature were not elected with the  power to act on such broad concerns. On February 9th a vote was held for delegates for the convention "To consider the Existing Relations of the State of Tennessee."  PETER TURNEY was the county's choice for delegate, and though the convention was never held, a far more important meeting was held on Winchester's own courthouse lawn, on February 24th. At this meeting principally engineered by PETER TURNEY, Col. THOMAS FINCH was called to act as chairman, Circuit Court Clerk NATHAN FRIZZELL and a prominent cotton planter, JOSEPH FRANKIN SYLER were chosen to act as secretaries.

      J. F. SYLER was a brother of ROBERT W., GEORGE WASHINGTON, and JOHN WESLEY SYLER.  A large and respectable portion of the Citizens of Franklin County consisting of several hundred people, heard PETER TURNEY, Esq's able and forceful speech in favor of immediate secession, in his usual stong and forceful  manner, where he offered the resloutions asking for secession from the state of Tennessee and be annexed to the state of Alabama who had already seceded from the United States. The resolution being adopted without a dissenting voice and after the reading of each, the courthouse rang with loud and protracted applause and cheers. At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. A. JOURDAN sang a Southern Marsailles which was highly appreciated by all, and for which all joined in Hurras and loud and prottacted applause for Mr. JOURDAN

Once again Franklin County refused to lag. Immediately following the meeting of February 24th, Turney had raised four companies from neighboring communities and had offered the troops to the Confederate Governmdent, and by the end of March he received an invitation from the Confederate War Department to raise a regiment. During the first Week in April, 1861, men from Franklin, Lincoln, Coffee, and Grundy Counties were organized into ten companies, and on 9 April, Turney received another letter from J.J. Hooper, Private Secretary to L.P. Walker, Confederate Secretary of War, asking him to hold his regiment " in instant rediness to move at the call of this government".

The fervor with which these men volunteered was remarkable, since this was still a week before the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter, on 14 April. Five days after Lincoln's call for 75,000 troops of 19 April, VA seceded. The following day, 25 April, saw the ten companies assemble at Winchester with spirits soaring and trigger-fingers itching. The day before ROBERT SYLER, brother of GEORGE WASHINGTON SYLER, had enlisted in Captain Clement Arledge's Company at Salem, and he was among these assembled at the Courthouse. PETER TURNEY was elected their colonel on April 27th and the remaining three days of encampment before their departure were filled with parades, singing, dancing, and gay paarties. On the last day of April the troops gathered on the grassy lawn of Mary Sharp College, just east of the court house and the three hundred girls enroled there assembled to bid a touching farewell to Turney's Regiment. The scene could easily have been staged by Margaret Mitchell,  for the dainty young "belles" wept with joy and pride for the gallant "Ashleys" riding off to defend their "Glorious Cause".   A student's eye witness account follows: "The whole school assembled in front of the college to hear Col. Turney's farewell speech before he went to the front. He had been President of the Board of Trustees for many years. He was a man of magnificient physique, and as he rode into the ground on a beautiful horse, each throbbing heart in that group of southern girls felt sure that he would lead his troops to Glorious Victory.  Dr. Graves (President of the College) made a ringing speech, which was cheered to the echo by the soldiers. Then Col Turney, his heart evidently stirred to its utmost depths and his face all aglo with the fire of love for the south, dismounted from his horse, and in a voice trembling with emotion asured Dr. Graves that his elequent burning words and the half-smiling, half-tearful faces of the girls would be an inspiration to him and his brave men in the new experiences awaiting them, that the  memory of this hallowed scene would be with them in the lonely hours of camp life, and nerve their arms in the hour of battle. As he mounted his horse and rode away followed by his gallent soldiers, some of the girls sobbed quietly, but all felt in their hearts that such men and such a leader could never know defeat." THE NASHVILLE DAILY GAZETTE OF FRIDAY MAY 3, 1861, PAGE 2, REPORTED THE DEPARTURE OF THE FRANKLIN COUNTY REGIMENT: "On Wednesday evening last, PETER TRUNEY's Regiment of Franklin County Troops, 1200 strong, took their departure from Winchester for Lynchburg, VA. The scene of their leaving is said to have been of the most solem and impressive character. As the troops marched out of town, their path was literally strewn with flowers from the hands of ladies and children, who, while they wept biterly at the necessity of parting with their brave friends and kinsmen, prounced in their every action a hearty "God Bless You."

The following day the troops marched to Decherd and boarded a train for the trip to Virginia--still having no orders from the Confederate Government to do so. Soon after their departure the train was side-tracked to allow another train from Knoxville to pass. The passengers aboard each train jerred and taunted those aboard the other: for the other train carried Union sympathizers headed for Nashville to protest to Governor Harris the upcoming referendum for secession, which would this time prove successful. And so with the arrival of their troops in Virginia, Franklin County proved undeniably that she had, in a sence, "seceded" from Tennessee, although Alabama never acted on the resolution to admit Franklin County to that state, and Franklin County automatically became part of Tennessee again when the state finally did seceeed.

After the organization of the Regiment at Winchester they moved on toward the seat of war in Virginia. The cars were not Pullman Palace Sleepers, but simply box cars such as used in hauling sheep, hogs cattle, and horses. By dawn they had gone all the way to Chattanooga, and passed leaisurely through East Tennessee, made a long stop at Morristown. Looking down a street three hundred yards away, they could see a large crowd assembled there where Andrew Johnson was to make a speech. Some of the boys suggested that they take him off the stump and carry him with them, but sober counsel prevailed, however, and Andy was left unmolested. The regiment was evidently the first soldiers who had passed that way, for a good crowd assembled to gaze at them, and presently calls were made for speeches. Several prominent citizens responded, and their speeches were favorable to the South. The calls for our regiment officers and Colonel Turney made again his famous speech, telling how we would fight yankies "Whenever, Wherever, and However".

Leisurely they passed along, reaching Lynchburg, VA. at daybreak, on the first day of May, where they marched to the Fair Grounds. There they found that the stalls for horses had been converted into barracks for them, four men to sleep on the lower floor, four on the upper, making eight for each stall. Many incidents occurred here of more or less interest, one of which was the sharp contest between Majors Anderson and Holman. It was learned that Confederate War Departments regulations required only one Major to the Regiment, but two had been elected, following Federal Regulations. Another very warm election was held and Holman was elected Major of the Regiment. Afterward they were sworn into service of the Confederate States, being drawn up into line, close column by division and it is believed a Confederate Officer, C.C. CLAY, stood upon a rostum and commanded to raise right hands, and take upon themselves the solomn oath to stand true to President Davis and the Confederate Cause....  After a stay of two or three weeks at Lynchburg, the unit was transported to Richmond, where tents had been prepared. Cooking and eating their rations, and learning how to step to the air of Martial Music was an everyday occurance. After a few days smooth-bore muskets were issued to the men, when they had been promised they would be armed with rifles by Colonel Turney. andemonium reigned, and in vain Colonel Turney said that it was the best that could be done, that the Confederacy had no rifles. Fortunately President Davis and his Cabinet arrived in Richmond, and Mr. Davis came into camp, and standing upon a box, delivered a very elequent speech. Companies were marched back to their quarters, and every man took his gun, with which they did effective work, and after they began to get into battle each one soon had a good rifle.

The next move was to Winchester, VA. where they stayed about a week, drilling and learning how to maneuver upon the field and doing the manual of arms. From there they were sent to Harper's Ferry, remaining there about a week. They saw where old John Brown was captured. While there the regiment was allowed to vote, along with the rest of the state of Tennessee, on whether or not they favored the Ordiances of Secession from the Federal Government. Strangely enough, some of the troops voted against secession, but overwhelmingly the regiment favored it. They were also issued their first Confederate uniforms, and were then marched back to Winchester, VA. Some who had been issued new shoes had very sore feet. They passed through Charleston, and arriving back to a place called Darksville to meet the yankees under General Patterson. In a skirmish fourteen yankees were captured, and  was the first prisoners they ever saw. Back again to Winchester, they took up the regular routine of Camp life. How proudly did they step when the band struck up "The Girl I Left Behind Me!"  With guns shining bright and bayonets gleaming high in the air, they stepped and thought of the loved ones at home and the girls that had been left behind.

GEORGE MARRIED SAMANTHA JENNINGS, THE DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM C. AND MALISSA ARNOLD JENNINGS and a sister to CHARLOTTE JENNINGS, wife of ISAAC NEWTON SYLER.

GEORGE WASHINGTON SYLER joined the Confederate Army on 16 Nov 1861, at the age of 22. He was 1 Sgt. Company G, 41 Tenn. Inf. Camp 114, 11/26/1861 to 5/16/1865.  He was captured at the fall of Ft. Donalson, escaped Oct. 16, 1862. Received pay at Camp Trousdale, was in the Battle of Richmond, VA.

He raised his grandson, ROY LEE SYLER and his sister, ANNIE after their mother died. Dad related stories that his Grandfather told about a battle on Lookout Mountain being the one where his company was on top of the mountain and the yankees were coming up the side of the mountain. He was considered the best "Marksman" in his unit. His fellow soldiers kept saying "Shoot Him George." He said the person rolled down the side of the mountain, as he described, like a squirrel. He was captured again, it is not known where, but according to the Confederate Muster Roll Records, He was paroled in Tallageda, AL. May 16, 1865. Dad said he would ask every minister he met if he would be forgiven for shooting the man on Look Out Mountain. He lost his mind before he died worrying over it.

He took his grandchildren, ROY LEE, ANNIE and GEORGE WASHINGTON to raise after their mother died and their dad was going to put them up for adoption. He owned a farm near Elk River and Shilo Bridge, Champ, TN. Grandmother SAMANTHA lived there until her death.  Her son HUBERT lived with her until he married his 2nd wife ZORA SULLENGER.  The property was owned by AARON JENNINGS in the 1950's when I lived in Sullenger Bend. This information was received from SALLY SYLER RICHEY. The book "SMITHLAND" by Reuben Crawford, has pictures of Granny Syler (Samantha) and a write up about Hubert Syler, their son. In Elaine Owens Dickey's book of LINCOLN COUNTY speaks of a place called GEORGE'S STORE in Smithland. It was Incorporated in 1880 and renamed "SMITHLAND" in 1885. It is thought this probably was GEORGE WASHINGTON SYLER'S store.  AGE 79 YRS 5 MOS 9 DAYS

1838:  George A. Pattillo emigrated to Texas in 1830.  Report # 1, No. 11; 1 labor in Jefferson County.

[The Handbook of Texas Online]

George A. Pattillo, early Texas settler and political leader, was born in Georgia about 1796. He moved to Louisiana in 1819. He served as a member of the Republic of Texas General Council from January 13 to March 11, 1836. He volunteered for military duty and was en route to San Jacinto when the famous battle there was fought.

Gerorge held a number of public offices in Austin and in Southeast Texas.  He served as associate justice of Jefferson County in 1837 before holding the position of justice of the peace in 1838.  Although defeated in the 1840 House race, he represented Jefferson County in the House of Representatives of the Sixth Congress (1841-42) and was senator from Jefferson and Jasper counties in the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth congresses of the republic.  During this period he was chairman of the Committee on Enrolled Bills and led a successful fight against the repeal of the tariff.  He was also noted as an ardent annexationist.  In February 1844, Pattillo urged President Sam Houston to appoint an additional annexation negotiator in Washington.  In 1845 Texas was admitted into the Union.

After the annexation of Texas, George became the first chief justice of Orange County, in 1852-53.  In 1861 he served as justice of the peace for that county.  Tax rolls of 1840 show that he had title to more than 3,800 acres of land in Jefferson County and owned five horses and five cattle. Jefferson, the former county seat on Cow Bayou, was actually a settlement, or scattering of farmhouses, and was never platted as a townsite.  By 1845, it had vanished as a community.  The new post office was established at Pattillo's Station, George Pattillo's home on upper Cow Bayou, midway between Beaumont and Orange.  Toward the end of his life George settled at Bunn's Bluff, on the Neches River north of Beaumont, where he remained until his death in 1871.

Notes for Thomas Bradford:

[The Bradfords of Charles City County, Virginia and Some of Their Descendants, 1653-1993, by David Thomas Bradford]

John's oldest brother, Thomas, also left plenty of footprints between his birth in 1731 and his death in 1785. He and his wife Mary had nine children: Elizabeth (who married John Prewitt in 1769); Mary (who married a Mr. Lovet); Philemon (who married Susan Clopton on March 25, 1779); David (who married Mary Keraney, or perhaps Kearny, on August 2, 1784, and who is referred to as David Bradford Jr. in Granville County records); Thomas Jr. (who married in Polly Hargraves on August 12, 1782, and is believed to have married a second wife, Martha Garrison, on February 13, 1804); Ephriam; Benjamin (who married Polly Smith in 1783, before moving to Tennessee and, later, Louisiana); Sarah (who married James Fuller in 1786); and Sealy (who married Coleman Reed White in 1786).  Thomas, the oldest of Philemon's children, like his father, actively snapped up available land in Granville County. Hence, Thomas was granted 640 acres on the Lick Creek branch of Flatt River on March 25, 1752. He was granted 412 acres on the north side of Fishing Creek on March 10, 1761. Finally, also on March 10, 1761, he was granted 430 acres on both sides of Fort Creek "joining Philemon Bradford's line." Thomas sold that last tract to his father for ten pounds on November 11, 1961. Eight years later, as mentioned earlier, Philemon passed that land to his son John Bradford I -- my great, great, great, great, great grandfather. Thomas also served in the Granville County militia. Hence, Thomas appeared at that militia's general musters on October 8, 1754 and September 6, 1755.  Thomas died in Granville County in 1786. His will, dated March 22, 1785, was proved in the Granville County court in May 1786.  James Heflin delivered the sermon at Thomas's funeral.  Thomas, like his brother Philemon Jr., has a number of descendants who have actively traced his branch of the Bradford family tree.  Notably, two of Thomas's sons (Philemon, ca.1755-1824, and Thomas Jr., ca.1750-ca.1835) reportedly moved to Greenville County, South Carolina, in 1797. Thereafter, in 1814, the descendants of those two sons reportedly all moved from South Carolina to Alabama.  Indeed, a wealth of information on the descendants of Philemon's descendants can be found in the Asheville Library and Archives in St. Clair County, Alabama. Most informative is a large descendancy chart, going all the way back to the first Philemon Bradford, which lists over a hundred Bradford descendants.  That chart, created by Earl Massey of Trussville, Alabama, has information on a host of descendants of Philemon who moved to Alabama, including, most tantalizingly, the Presley family (i.e., a Mary Bradford married William R. Presley in Alabama in about 1840) -- whether or not that makes the Bradfords related the "King of Rock and Roll" Elvis Aaron Presley (who was born in nearby Tupelo, Mississippi ninety-five years later), I do not know. I leave that to another researcher to discover.

[Patillo, Pattillo, Patullo and Pittillo Families, compiled by Melba C. Crosse]

Rev. Samuel Pattillo, b. 25 Jan. 1771, Charlotte Co., Va.; d. 4 June 1841 and was buried in West View Cemetery, Covington, Newton Co., GA. He m. (1) Francis Hall in Green Co., GA, 14 Apr. 1795; she was b. 19 Feb. 1771. He m. (2) 16 July 1815, Martha Bailey who was b. 17 Aug. 1790, Madison, Morgan Co., GA; d. 14 Sept. 1842 and was buried in West View Cemetery, Covington, GA.

Samuel Pattillo was taxed in McKeever's Mulberry Fork District in Jackson Co., GA, 1803-1805. He was a fortunate drawer in the 1805 and 1821 Land Lotteries in GA. Drawing land first in Jackson Co. and second in Lee Co. He is, also, listed in the 1832-1833 "Gold and Land Lottery". He was enumerated in the 1820 census of Morgan Co., GA, later moving to Walton Co., GA (1830 census) and then to Newton Co., GA (1840 census) where he was living at the time of his death.

As stated before, he was one of the witnesses of David's, his brother, will in Morgan Co., GA. The Last Will and Testament of David Pattillo, dec'd., was proven in open court 6 Mar. 1815, Morgan Co., by the oaths of William Johnston, Samuel Pattillo and Robert Sessions.

Rev. Samuel and others purchased a piece of land in Newton Co., GA, to build a house of worship for the Methodist Episcopal Church from Julian and Qoe Bailey, 9 Mar. 1~30. This same year, Samuel Pattillo of Walton Co. purchased land in Covington, Newton Co., GA, for himself. (Film No. 42492, pt. 5, SLC)

Some descendants of Rev. Samuel Pattillo have stated that he was buried behind the pulpit of the Pattillo Memorial Methodist Church, Covington, GA. Yet, in the old part of West View Cemetery, Covington, GA, there is a head stone bearing the inscription of Rev. Samuel Pattillo June 25, 1771;d. Sept. 14, 1841. The headstone for his second wife, Martha Bailey, reads "Martha Patillo -- Aug. 7, 1790 - Sept. 14, 1842. The announcement of Mrs. Pattillo's death appeared in the Southern Christian Advocate, 21 Oct. 1842. It stated that "Mrs. Martha Patillo, widow of Rev, Samuel Patillo, died Sept. 15, 1842. Her husband died recently at Covington, Newton Co., GA beyond his three score and ten years." (Ga. Mag., F. Huxton, 1961-62, p. 70)

(Patillo, Pattillo, Patullo and Pittillo Families, compiled by Melba C. Crosse)

"Mrs. Mattie Janet Miller, youngest daughter of Rev. Samuel Pattillo, son of George, wrote a history of the Pattillo family. In this she states the following: "The following facts are from my father, Samuel Pattillo. 'My father, George Pattillo, aged about 20, and his brother Henry Pattillo, about 18 years old, came to America in the year 1740. My father had not been in America a great while before he was married to Martha Varner of Penn, He afterwards settled in Charlotte Co., Va., where he reared the most of his family, five sons and three daughters their names as follows: James, William, David, John and Samuel, Sarah, Mary and Jane.  My father's brother, Henrv Pattillo, settled in North Carolina, and in time became an eminent Presbyterian minister. He married and reared several children. All of the Pattillos in America are descendants of these two brothers, the most of them being those from George Pattillo, my father who was a devout, holy nan, a Wesleyan Methodist, my mother of the same faith.  My father, Samuel Pattilio was a Methodist preacher more than forty years before he was called to his reward in 1844. He was twice married; first to Frances Hall, by whom there were nine children. Their names: George Alexander, Leroy, Martha Reid, Wesley, Simeon, James, Elizabeth, Urban and Fannie. His second wife was Martha Bailey, by whom there were eight children, (three died in infancy), their names: Samuel Henry, Mary Louise, Robert Fletcher, Benjamin ;Upheus and h·fatde Janet."

Notes for LeRoy Pattillo:

[Pattillo.FTW]

Leroy Pattillo was enumerated on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses of Walton Co., GA.  Emaline (Evelina?) Pattillo was enumerated on the 1860 census of Walton Co., Ga. (p. 558) and gave her age as 45.  If this was Evelina, instead of an Emaline, and it probably was, she was shy ten years on her age.  Her age on the 1850 census was 44 which was probably correct.  It has never been unusual for a woman to subtract a few years from her age as she grew older.

Leroy Pattillo drew land in the 1827 GA. Land Lottery (No. 193, dt. 5, sec. Coweta) and again in the Gold Lottery of 1832 in Cobb Co., GA. Since Leroy's residence continued in Walton Co. until his death, it is possible that some of his children "took up" the land he drew before 1845.  He was appointed postmaster of Monroe, 4 Dec. 1832; listed as a surveyor in 1854 and as a merchant in 1850.  He, with a number of others, contributed in 1849 toward the purchase of 62 acs. near Monroe for a Methodist camp ground. Notes for Johann Phillipp Siler:

[Syler.FTW]

Settled in Rockbridge county Va. about 1781. He is believed to be named for his uncle and grandfather Harless. It is reported he moved to Tennesse to be with his sons in later years. There are records showing he sold property in Rockbridge county in 1785. In December 1789 he deeded his interest in his father's estate (he now was deceased) to brother-in-law Anthony Mustoe. In Jacob, Sr's Will he was to receive five pounds sterling in leiu of his estate. In addition to 1/10th of the Siler estate. The records of a younger cousin Philip Siler, Jr. (1764-1852) are sometimes confused, as well as those pertaining to his uncle Philip Siler, Sr.

PHILIP SILER was born in Augusta County Va. circa 1755,  married to ESTER about 1776-1778. He was known to be living in Rockbridge County Va in 1789. It is believed PHILLIP is the ancester of the line of SYLER's in Arkansas, and if so he would have married by 1780 when his son JOHN was born in Franklin County, TN. leaving children whose descendants spread into Arkansas, TX and Missouri. If ANNA CATHERINA was born on the boat to America, PHILIP would have been born in Germany.

[pattillo.FTW]

George Alexander Pattillo, b. ca. 1720 in Scotland; d. 9 June 1798, Charlotte Co., Va. Married Martha Varner (Varnor, Vernon) of Penn. in VA, 1 July 1757. She was b. 1 Feb. 1735.

Came from Dundee, Angus County, Scotland to America with his brother, Henry Pattillo in 1740.   George and his younger brother, Henry, had supposedly been in PA before moving to VA. They were closely associated with a large group of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians who had emigrated at an earlier date, by way of PA., to the southern part of Virginia. The group we speak of settled in and around Cub Creek, Charlotte Co., then Lunenburg Co. John CaIdwell seemed to be the leader of this particular group as the area near Cub Creek was known as the "Caldwell Settlement"

William Caldwell executed a deed, 2 Apr. 1751, in Lunenburg Co., VA, for the conveyance of one acre of ground on his land for a burial place to thirty-one men in his neighborhood. Among these men whose families we find closely associated with the Pattillo family were David Logan, James Logan, John Middleton, Isaac Vernon (Varner, Varnon) and Henry Pattillo. (Va. Hist. Mag., Vol. XVIII, pp. 40-41)

The first record we have of George Pattillo is in Lunenburg Co., VA, where he was listed as a tithable in 1752 by \William Caldwell. The surname was spelled Portiilo, The name of John Varnon follows that of George, (Sunlight on the Southside, L. C. Bell, p. 187).

(From Melba C. Crosse book)

George Pattillo gave his daughter Jane the middle name of JOHNSTONE. His brother, Henry, named a son William JOHNSTONE Pattillo. He, too, had a daughter named Jane who was a namesake of his mother. Was Jane, the mother of George and Henry, a JOHNSTONE before her marriage?

George Alexander Pattillo and Martha Varner had the following children whose names and birth dates were taken from the Bible of John Varner Pattillo:

A. James Pattillo, b. 8 Aug. 1759.

B. Sarah Pattillo, b. 1 May 1760.

C. William Henry Pattillo, b. 31 May 1762.
