Mrs. Alice Maxwell, wife of William H. Maxwell, who died last week at her home in Orient, on the Mount Hood road, was a pioneer of 1864. She was born in Middleton, Conn., 1847. In April, 1856, her parents moved to Placer County, California, coming west by way of the Isthmus. She was married to Mr. Maxwell in 1864. They lived in Orient until 1869, when they moved to Cleone, Or. Three years afterwards they moved to Orient, where they have lived ever since. She is survived by her husband, one son, of Spokane, and the following daughters: Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Homer Johnson, of Pleasant Home; Mrs. R. I. Anderson, of North Yamhill; Mrs. Spaulding of Portland, and Mrs. Scoville, of Elk City. The funeral was conducted from the Pleasant Home Church by Rev. Mr. Riley, of McMinnville.

M., at the Conservatory Chapel of A. J. Rose & Son, S. E. 6th and Alder. Commitment private, Portland Crematorium.

Mrs. Elnora Scoville 100-year-old resident of Elk City, died Saturday in the New Lincoln Hospital in Toledo.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Scoville was born near Fairview on the Sundial Ranch Feb. 16, 1870, and spent her girlhood in that community. She was married in 1891 to Seymour Scoville and the couple operated a store in Orient prior to moving to Elk City in 1907 where they were ranchers. Mr. Scoville died in 1940.

Mrs. Scoville was a graduate of Monmouth Normal School, now Oregon College of Education, and taught school at Marmot, east of Sandy, prior to her marriage.

She had nine children, eight of whom survive. The survivors are six sons, Justin of Portland, Jack of Elk City, Ellis of Brownsville, Dick of Reno, Nev., Ed and Pete, both of Coos Bay, and two daughters, Mrs. Steven Phinney of Beaverton and Mrs. Sam Brown of Tacoma, Wash.

Also surviving are 17 grand children, 41 great-grandchildren, and eight great great-grandchildren. Last February Mrs. Scoville was selected as Lincoln County's Valentine Sweetheart.

The family requests remembrances be contributions to the New Lincoln Hospital in Toledo.

Funeral services for William H. Maxwell, who died Sunday, April 3, at Pleasant Home, aged 90 years, were held last Wednesday afternoon from the Pleasant Home Methodist church, Rev. A. J. Ware of Oregon City preaching the funeral sermon. Interment was in the Pleasant Home cemetery.

Mr. Maxwell was born at Palmyra, Mo., July 5, 1829, and crossed the plains to California in 1852. He settled in Placer county at that time the mecca for goldseekers, and after residing in that county for 17 years married Miss Alice Buell of Michigan Bluffs, Cal. Soon after their marriage the couple came to Oregon and established residence at Fairview. After three years they moved to Pleasant Home where they lived for 40 years. Mrs. Maxwell died in January, 1910.

Survivors are one son, Wilmer H. Maxwell of Spokane and five daughters, Mrs. Elnora Scoville of Pioneer, Or., Mrs. Alice M. Spaulding of Portland, and Mrs. Louise Nelson, Mrs. Katie Anderson and Mrs. Myrtle Johnson, all of whom live at Pleasant Home.
