CHAPTER VII

MARGARET ISABELLE KENNEDY

Margaret Isabelle Kennedy, fifth child and fourth daughter of Neal Kennedy and Martha Ann Hicks, was born September 30, 1852 and died February 22, 1916. She married Elbert Fisher Davis on January 18, 1876. He was born May 23, 1850, the son of Arthur M. Davis and Susannah Anthony Hawkins. Elbert died July 1, 1934 and was buried in the Kennedy Cemetery beside his wife.

The following account of his death was from a Birmingham newspaper of July 2, 1934: "E. F. Davis, age 84, died early Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. C. Carver, after a short illness. He is survived by six children. Among them is W. A. Davis, Fairfield. The funeral was held at the Carver home Monday morning, and the body sent to his old home near Lower Peach Tree for burial. Rev.Mr. Roberts, Brandon Memorial Methodist Church, and Rev. H.G. Williams, Calvary Baptist Church, officiated.

The 1880 Clarke County Census, Cane Creek Beat, listed the family as follows:

James G. Davis was not the first child born to Elbert and Margaret Davis. Their first child, Eddie, born in 1877, died before the 1880 Census was taken.

THOMAS EDDIE DAVIS

Thomas Eddie Davis, oldest child of Margaret Isabelle Kennedy and Elbert Fisher Davis was born January 4, 1877. He was deceased by the time of the 1880 Census. Buried in the Kennedy Cemetery, Chance, AL.

JAMES GILBERT DAVIS

James Gilbert Davis, second child of Margaret Isabelle Kennedy and Elbert Fisher Davis, was born December 26, 1879. He died June 29, 1948 and is buried in the Kennedy Cemetery. Jimmy never married.

MATTIE ANN DAVIS

Mattie Ann Davis, third child of Margaret Isabelle Kennedy and Elbert Fisher Davis, was born December 15, 1880. Married Enoch H. Bradford on December 26, 1901. He was the son of Harriet Elizabeth "Dump" Smith and Marion DeCalb litapil Bradford.

"Dump" and "Tap" had another son, Thomas Marian Bradford, who married Martha Alma Wilson. Martha Ann's mother was Mary Elizabeth Kennedy Wilson, sister of Margaret Isabelle Kennedy.

Mattie died August 6, 1912, when her little baby girl was only seven months old.

1. Lucille Bradford, born January 14, 1912. Married Lester Worthen Berry, Jr. on February 8, 1931. They had two sons. Lucille lives in Groton, MA.

WALTER EUGENE DAVIS

Walter Eugene Davis, fourth child of Margaret Kennedy and Elbert Fisher Davis, was born June 26, 1883 and died June 3, 1965. Buried in the Kennedy Cemetery. Never married.

LUCILLE ALMA DAVIS

Lucille "Lucy" Alma Davis, fifth child of Margaret Isabelle Kennedy and Elbert Fisher Davis, was born August 26, 1885. Married Joseph Lester Carver on October 4, 1911. He was born September 20, 1879 and died June 21, 1943. Lucy died June 13, 1960, and they are both buried in Tuscaloosa.

Lucy and Lester had two children:

1. Joseph Lester Carver, Jr.,, born August 18, 1912. Married on September 14, 1935, Daisy Hinson, born September 15, 1915. Daisy's parents were Jud Hinson and Fannie Atchison.

Four sons, all born in Tuscaloosa:

A. Joseph Kenneth Carver, born July 25, 1936. Married first, Shelby Hughes, June 15, 1958; they had three sons. Married second, Sandra Shaffer on August 19, 1989; no issue. Kenneth is a dentist in Johnson City Tennessee.

a. Steven Kenneth Carver, born in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia on October 20, 1960.

b. Roger Scott Carver, born in Kingsport Sullivan Co. TN on June 12, 1962. Married on May 20, 1989 in Dallas, TX to Janice Carol Robertson, the daughter of James Grady Robertson, Jr. and Virginia Corinne Smith.

(1) Jessica Renee Carver, born in Dallas, Texas on April 1, 1991.

c. Mark Edward Carver, born in Kingsport also, January 30 , 1 9 64 .

B. Harry Henson Carver, born December 8, 1937. Married on December 30, 1965, Sandra Paulette "Polly" Lindsey, born December 13, 1944, the daughter of Henry Richard Lindsey and Mary Brazeal. Two children:

a. Catherine Holly Carver, born in Tuscaloosa January 27, 1967. Married William J. Miller on March 24, 1990.

b. Harry Henson Carver, Jr., born in Birmingham on December 13, 1969.

C. Charles Elbert Carver, born March 3, 1939. Married on June 29, 1958 to Johnnie Todd.

Carolyn's brother Frank Donald Echols, married Martha Helen Kennedy, daughter of Strother Edd Kennedy and granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson Kennedy and Lula Octavia Davis.

Cecil and Carolyn have three daughters:

A. Carolyn Lee Carver, born March 7, 1941. Married William Goodloe, Jr. on December 18, 1964. Three children:

a. Carolyn Marie Goodloe, born April 23, 1968

b. James William Goodloe, III, born on October 8, 1971.

c. Lee Carver Goodloe, born August 31, 1975.

B. June Lester Carver, born September 30, 1947. She married Richard L. Brehm on September 10, 1972; divorced. one child:

a. Richard Lewis Brehm, born October 3, 1977.

WILLIE ARTHUR DAVIS

Willie Arthur Davis, sixth child of Margaret Isabelle Kennedy and Elbert Fisher Davis, was born February 10, 1889 and died October 14, 1950. He is buried in the Kennedy Cemetery at Chance.

Willie married Rosa Lee Miller on February 10, 1912. She was born November 4, 1882 and died October 19, 1982. Rosa was buried at Pleasant Grove, Alabama.

1. Margaret Elizabeth Davis, born December 3, 1914. Married on February 20, 1953, Robert Cretney, born May 24, 1914; died September 8, 1965. No issue. Margaret lives in Pleasant Grove.

2. Infant son, born April 7, 1919. Died at birth.

3. Infant son, born June 21, 1920. Died at birth.

4. Elbert Joe Davis, born June 14, 1922 and died on August 20, 1922.

5. Frances Davis, born April 5, 1926. Married on May 2,1948. Haymond Barton White, born May 21, 1924; died July 31, 1984. He was buried at Pleasant Grove.

A. Michael Alan White, born April 4, 1949. Mike married Linda Marie Farris on September 22, 1973. She was born July 18, 1953.

a. Rebecca Marie White, born July 6, 1978.

B. Susan Cochran White, born June 18, 1953. Married on April 26, 1974, Clarence Wesley Brannon, born November 28, 1953.

GERTRUDE MADORA DAVIS

Gertrude Madora Davis, seventh child of Margaret Isabelle Kennedy and Elbert Fisher Davis, was born March 17, 1892; died July 3, 1984. She married on February 10, 1912 to Claude Charles Henderson, born July 1880; died September 19, 1959. Eight children:

1. Julien Henderson, born in Chance February 18, 1913; died June 6, 1967. Never married.

2. Marie Henderson, born March 23, 1914, Chance. Married Miles Penton on April 4, 1942. Miles, the son of Mack Penton and Emma Talley, was born November 2, 1909. He died December 15, 1977 and is buried in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park, Tuscaloosa, AL. One child:

A. Thomas Miles Penton, born in Tuscaloosa on February 6, 1948. Married Katherine Madison on December 29, 1969. Two children:

a. Thomas Madison Penton, born in Opelika, Lee Co. AL on June 13, 1974.

b. Katherine Miles Penton, born in Corsicana,Texas on January 2, 1977.

3. Marguerite Henderson, born at Chance December 10, 1915. Married William Dempsey. Divorced.

4. Claudia Augusta Henderson, born at Chance May 12, 1919. Married on October 15, 1943, Victor Edward Hilburn, born June 20, 1918, son of Glennie Victor Hilburn and Sadie Chambers. Two children, both born in Tuscaloosa.

B. James Sidney Hilburn, born December 16, 1952. married his cousin Margaret Cecile Carver November 6, 1976. Cecile is the daughter of Elbert Cecil Carver and Carolyn Echols.

5. William Hayes Henderson, born at Grove Hill on August 21, 1923. Married Gene Rebecca Koster on December 18, 1944. She was born July 13, 1925, the daughter of Thomas William Koster and Margaret Louise Shirley. Bill and Gene are retired teachers. They have four children, all born in Tuscaloosa.

A. Margaret Gene Henderson, born November 2, 1946. She married Earl Calhoun Wilson on June 6, 1969.

Margaret and her husband have two children, both born in Tuscaloosa.

b. William Calhoun Wilson, born May 20, 1977.

B. Janet Dorees Henderson, born October 2, 1948. Married Ernest Eugene Bishop on November 25, 1971; divorced on July 4, 1981. Married second Tommy Ellis Staggs on December 21, 1984. No children by either marriage.

C. Rebecca Koster Henderson, born April 7, 1953. Married Kenneth Preston Strickland on April 3, 1982. Two children:

a. Kendal Hayes Strickland, born December 12, 1983 in Tuscaloosa.

b. Katherine Koster Strickland, born March 4, 1987 in Northport, AL.

D. William Thomas Henderson, born April 10, 1955. He married Paula Diann Nordmeyer September 4, 1977.

a. William Philip Henderson, born in Birmingham on April 3, 1978.

b. Margaret Koster Henderson, born in Brewton, AL January 26, 1982.

6. James Howard Henderson, son of Gertrude Madora Davis and Claude Charles Henderson, was born in Grove Hill, AL on May 11, 1925. He married in October of 1951, Edna Ficquette, born November 27, 1927 in Elmore County, the daughter of James Marshall Ficquette and Dera Edna Gilliland.

James is a retired school principal and Edna teaches school. They have two daughters:

a. Connie Sue Henderson, born March 20, 1953, Camp Pickett, Dinwittie County, Virginia. Married in June 1977 Donald Hinton.

b. Joy Dee Henderson, born June 15, 1958, Tuscaloosa.

7. Merrill Henderson, daughter of Gertrude Madora Davis and Claude Charles Henderson, was born at Grove Hill, Al June 21, 1927. Married on July 17, 1948, Charles Lee Clark, born November 2, 1924, the son of James Gordon Clark, Sr. and Ettie Lee Clark.

Merrill and Charles have two children:

A. Charles Lee Clark, Jr., born December 13, 1951, in Tuscaloosa. He married Mary Patricia Klein on February 4, 1983. She was born November 11, 1952.

a. Lauren Elizabeth Clark, born September 21, 1985, Pensacola, FL.

b. Lindsey Patricia Clark, born November 26, 1988, Pensacola, Fl.

8. Catherine Henderson, daughter of Gertrude Madora Davis and Claude Charles Henderson, was born in Grove Hill, AL on October 25, 1928. She married on March 18, 1948 in Hamilton, AL, Robert Walters, born April 2, 1923 in Fayette, AL, the son of Urban Walters and Caroline Hankins. Robert, a Methodist minister, died January 19, 1987 in Ramseur, NC, where he is buried.

Catherine and Robert had three children.

A. Robert W. Walters, Jr., born in Hendersonville, NC on November 27, 1951. He married Susan Wilder on April 13, 1986.

CHAPTER VIII

FABIUS NEAL KENNEDY

Fabius Neal Kennedy, sixth child of Martha Ann Hicks and Neal Kennedy, was born June 28, 1854, Clarke County, AL. His first marriage was to Laura Mae Barr (see attached copy of their Marriage Certificate), born March 5, 1856. Neal and Laura were married December 2, 1876, according to the Wilcox County Marriage Records and their only daughter, Clara B. Kennedy was born in September of 1877. Clara was only two and one-half years old when her mother died March 5, 1879.

Neal Kennedy's second marriage took place at his father's home on December 29, 1879, according to Family Bible Records of this family. However, the attached copy of the Marriage Record of Clarke County, AL shows that the wedding took place on December 28, 1879. The officiant was J. H. Fendley.

Neal's bride was Susan Ellen Barr, sister to his deceased wife. Susan was born on March 22, 1854, the daughter of Bartlett S. and Martha Ann Barr. This information was given to me by Carolyn Estelle Kennedy, the granddaughter of Fabius Neal Kennedy and Susan Ellen Barr.

The Barr family was listed in the 1860 Wilcox County Census, Prairie Bluff Precinct, Household No. 593:

Fabius Neal Kennedy and Susan Ellen Barr had five sons. Sometime before 1912, Neal moved his family to Mississippi, settling near Meridian. Susan died May 11, 1912, and was buried in Kemper County, MS in Bethel Cemetery.

Note the attached letter from Fabius Neal Kennedy to his son Bobby Kennedy in Baleshed, MS. This place is no longer on the map - may have been near Meridian, as this is where the "Kennedy Boys" resided. The letter is dated April 24, 1917.

Neal was apparently back in Clarke County, AL visiting his daughter, Clara Kennedy Sherman, as Clara enclosed a letter to her brother, Bobby. Neal stated he was not well, suffering from a backache. He died in another month, and was buried at Old Salem Cemetery. His tombstone reads:

Born June 28, 1860; died May 27, 1917. I had wondered why he was not buried in Mississippi, and this letter explains it. The six children of Fabius Neal Kennedy are as follows:

CLARA BELL KENNEDY

Clara Bell Kennedy, only child of Laura Mae Barr and Fabius Neal Kennedy, was born on September 24, 1877. Clara married John A. Sherman on September 11, 1904, according to family records.

Clara and John Sherman lived in Dickinson, where he ran a store. They had only two children, both stillborn. After the death of her husband, Clara moved to Meridian, MS to live with her brother, Julius. Kennedy.

It has always been quite interesting to me how various families in and around Dickinson are related by intermarriages. John Sherman was a,. brother to Louise Sherman who was married to Walter Ross Wilson. Walter had two brothers who married Kennedy sisters: Thomas R. Wilson married Martha Jane and John@Winfielld,,married Mary Elizabeth.

Two of the Wilson daughters, Eliza' E. and Lucy Ann, married Cyrus Larrimore and his brother,E. P. Larrimore, respectively. Cyrus and E. P.'s brother, John L. Larrimore, was married to Catherine Angeline Kennedy, sister to the above mentioned Kennedy girls!

Still another Wilson daughter, Corrine, was married to Pugh McLeod; their son, Bob Thomas McLeod, was married to Susan Viola Kennedy, a niece of the Kennedy sisters.

JULIUS JOHNSON KENNEDY

Julius Johnson Kennedy, oldest son of Fabius Neal Kennedy and and his second wife, Susan Ellen Barr, was born on May 14, 1881. He was a policeman in Meridian Mississippi. Julius married Lillian McGee July 22, 1913 and they had one son. Lillian died April 9, 1933 and Julius died May 26, 1959.

1. Julian Johnson Kennedy, only child of Julius Kennedy and Lillian McGee, was born June 23, 11916. He lives somewhere in Oklahoma and is a physician.

WILLIAM FRANKLIN KENNEDY

William Franklin "Frank" Kennedy, third child of Fabius Neal Kennedy, but second son by Susan Ellen Barr, was born August 25, 1883. He married Lola Horne on May 30, 1912, and they had five children. Lola died in March of April of 1937 and Frank died November 6, 1968.

1. William Franklin Kennedy, Jr. was born March 17, 1914. He died in the 1970's.

2. Robert M. Kennedy was born May 13, 1919. He married Hazel Hutchinson and lives in Texas. No issue.

3. Bessie Ruth Kennedy was born on November 9, 1921. She married Joe Long and they lived in Brandon, Mississippi. One daughter:

A. Shirley Long; lived in Birmingham at one time, and may have been married to a Brown.

4. Earl Clayton Kennedy, born November 2, 1923. He and his wife, Carolyn Lingle, had one son. Earl died about 1970.

5. J. Harold Kennedy, the last child of Frank and Lola Kennedy, lives in Jackson, MS. I contacted him and requested that he complete a Family Group Sheet but he declined, stating that his knowledge about the family was very limited. He explained that he was separated from them when he was young, due to the early death of his mother.

ROBERT ALLEN KENNEDY

Robert Allen Kennedy, fourth child of Neal Kennedy but third son of Neal and his second wife, Susan Ellen Barr, was born July 29, 1886. He married Ella Estelle Boyd on November 26, 1917.

You will see by the attached letters to his wife that Bob served in World War I. There is also a photo of him in his uniform. The letter to Estelle was dated January 9, 1919, and the post card March 21, 1919.

Bob must have returned home from the war in the fall of 1919, because their only child, Robert Allen Kennedy, Jr. was born in July of 1920.

Bob (my father called him "Bobby") died March 27, 1941 and Estelle died February 25, 1954.

1. Robert Allen Kennedy, Jr., born in Birmingham July 19, 1920. Married Virginia Greer Pearson on March 11 1948 in Whistler, AL. Virginia was born on April 17 1922 in Clanton, AL, the daughter of David Magruder Pearson, Sr. and Elizabeth "Bess" Young. Robert and Virginia live in Jacksonville, FL.

Robert and Virginia have two children.

A. Carolyn Elizabeth "Beth" Kennedy, born November 2, 1950, Monroeville, Monroe County, AL. She married George Wynns on June 2, 1973. They have two children and live in Gainesville, FL.

a. Melissa Greer Wynns, born March 32, 1976.

b. Robert "Bobby" Clifford Wynns, born August 14, 1981.

B. Robert Allen Kennedy, III, born August 23, 1952. He married Nancy Oatman July 15, 1977. They live in Arnold, Maryland and have three daughters:

a. Megan Gail Kennedy, born August 17, 1981.

b. Virginia Claire Kennedy, born on June 1, 1985.

c. Suzanne Patricia Kennedy, born on February 6, 1989.

CHARLES MARVIN KENNEDY

Charles Lamar Kennedy, fifth child of Fabius Neal Kennedy, but fourth son of Neal by his second wife, Susan Ellen Barr, was born August 15, 1889; died August 1, 1979.

Charlie worked for the railroad. He married Bertha G. Maxey on May 15, 1923. No issue. Bertha resides in Memphis, Tennessee.

GRADY LAMAR KENNEDY

Grady Lamar Kennedy, last child of Neal Kennedy and his second wife, Susan Ellen Barr, was born September 14, 1892; died February 10, 1965. Grady married Carrie Litt Boyd on December 10, 1917, eight months after the United States declared war on Germany. He served his country during World War I (see photo of him in his uniform).

Carrie Litt Boyd was a sister of Ella Estelle Boyd who married Robert Allen Kennedy, brother of Grady. She and Grady had only one child. Carrie died February 25, 1954 and Grady died February 10, 1965.

1. Carolyn Estelle Kennedy, only child of Grady and Carrie Kennedy, was born in Hattisburg, Mississippi October 3, 1918. She is unmarried and lives part of the time in Hattisburg and part of the time in Meridian. She is retired from South Central Bell.

CHAPTER IX

MARTHA JANE KENNEDY

Martha Jane Kennedy, daughter of Neal Kennedy and Martha Ann Hicks, was born May 4, 1856. She married Thomas R. Wilson on December 28, 1879, at her father's home(see attached copy of Marriage Certificate). Thomas was born March 25, 1855, the son of Robert Thomas Wilson and Rebecca Primm. Thomas died December 18, 1886, at the young age of 31. Martha died June 12, 1910 (see attached copy of her Obituary). They are buried in Old Salem Cemetery, Scyrene.

Martha Jane's brother, Fabius Neal Kennedy, was married to Susan Ellen Barr (his second wife) on the same date as Martha Jane and Thomas Wilson, also at the home of Neil Kennedy. They must have had a double wedding.

Martha Jane and Thomas Wilson had two daughters and one son.

1. Lola Edna Wilson, born in Dickinson October 29, 1880. Edna never married and devoted forty-four years to the teaching profession (see attached copy of tribute to her). After her retirement, Edna returned to Dickinson, where she died on November 20, 1957 (see attached copy of her Obituary).

2. Lillie Elona Wilson, born in Chance September 19, 1882. She married John Howard Davis in Chance in 1910. Johnny was born April 23, 1870, the son of Howard Covington Davis and Sarah Agnes Pine (see Chapter on Enoch Davis, Jr. in the Davis Section of this book).

Lillie and Johnny had one son.

A. Howard Wilson Davis, born in Dickinson on January 18, 1911. He married Dorothy Virginia Carlson on May 6, 1939. Dorothy was born on August 8, 1920, the daughter of Carl Wilhelm Carlson and Eleanor Verta Lindsey. Howard died in Leesburg, Florida and is buried in Grove Hill, Alabama. Dorothy lives in Florida, as do her two sons.

a. Howard Wilson Davis, Jr., born in Mobile November 13, 1947. Married first on September 19, 1970, Mary Lou Tharpe. He married second, Cheryl Ann Reindehl, born April 14, 1955 in Mansfield, Ohio, the daughter of Frank William Reindehl and Adeline Georgene Gabor.

Howard and Cheryl have two sons,both born in Leesburg, Lake County, Florida.

(1) Howard Wilson "Rocky" Wilson, III, born on July 11, 1981.

(2) Roger William Davis, born October 1, 1983.

b. William Carlson Davis, born in Fitzgerald, Ben Hill County, Georgia on December 16, 1955. He married Debra L. Davis on July 23, 1983.

(1) Benjamin William Davis, born in Eustis, FL on May 4, 1989.

(2) Nicholas Carl Davis, born November 19, 1990.

3. Thomas Gross Wilson, only son of Martha Jane Kennedy and Thomas R. Wilson, was born March 14, 1886. He died and is buried in Grove Hill. He married Minnie Strother Walker, born March 16, 1898 and died November 12, 1978. Minnie is buried in New Live Oak Cemetery, Selma, AL. Gross and Minnie had four children.

A. Thomas Gross Wilson, Jr., born May 21, 1920; died February 22, 1977; buried in New Live Oak Cemetery, Selma. He married on October 26, 1944, Audrey Lee Lanier, born July 31, 1926, the daughter of William Homer Lanier and Zelma Proctor. Gross and Audrey had two sons.

a. Thomas Gross Wilson, III, born in Selma June 19, 1946. Married first to Diana Winters, by whom he had one child. He married second, Kathleen Frye.

the daughter of Roland Oliver Ellison and Bettye Marilyn Mims.

Gary and Elaine had two sons, both born in Selma.

B. Willis Walker Wilson, born April 9, 1922; died June 22, 1924.

C. Martha Jane Wilson, only daughter of Gross and Minnie, was born August 23, 1924. She married first Wiley Powell, by whom she had a son and a daughter. Married second, Stanley Barber, who died in 1979. Martha died May 13, 1983.

a. Martha Sue Powell; married first to Don Siggers; no issue. Divorced. Married second to William Ray Brantley.

b. John Walter Powell; married Pamela, last name unknown; divorced.

D. Dean Strother Wilson, born at Scott's Station, AL on August 11, 1928. He married Carolyn Harper West, born September 11, 1931, the daughter of Raymond Lee West and Thelma Fitts. Dean owns and operates a printing and office supply company. He and Carolyn have six children and live in Selma, where all the children were born.

a. Dean Strother Wilson, Jr., born May 16, 1949. He married Carolyn Virginia Weissinger and they have two children.

(2) Sharon Deane Wilson, born June 6, 1970. Married December 17, 1988, Willard Oliver Powe, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Oliver Powe, Sr. of Pine Hill, Alabama.

Funeral Rites Held

For T. G. Wilson

Funeral services for Thomas Gross Wilson were held Sunday, January 6, 1963, at the Dickinson Baptist ChurCh.The Rev. Johnny Woodall and the Rev. J. Bennett Murphy officiated at the final rites.

Mr. Wilson, whose home was in Dickinson, died Friday, January 4, 1963, in, the Veterans Hospital at Montgomery.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas G. Wilson, Jr., Selma, and Dean S. Wilson, Browns, Ala.; one daughter, Mrs. Wiley W. Parnell, Montgomery; one sister, Mrs. J. H. Davis, Fitzgerald, Ga., and eight grandchildren.

The deceased was born in Clarke County on March 14, 1886, and was the son of Thomas A. and Martha Jane Kennedy Wilson.

Formerly employed in the post office, he was a veteran of World War 1.

Pall bearers were Chester Andrews, Pratt Patton, Jr., Lamar Rotch, Edward Kennedy, Jr., Hannis Kennedy, and J. C. Haskew. Honorary pallbearers were C. W. Carlson, W. P. Patton, Sr., Dr. Jack Dozier, F. M. Thigpen, Billy Spinks and Phil Davidson.

Interment was in the Grove Hill Cemetery with Holliman-Brown Service Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
