SECTION B
JAMES BISHOP HICKS
James Bishop Hicks, eighth child of Willis Bishop Hicks and his first wife, Dorothy B. Nance, was born February 27, 1833 in Georgia.
James married first on January 19, 1854, Sarah E. Presnall, the daughter of John Presnall. The Clarke County Marriage Records show that James and Sarah were married with an affidavit of his father, W. B. Hicks, and with the consent of her father, John Presnall.
The 1860 Census of Clarke County listed the family as follows:
James B. Hicks age 26 B. Clarke CO.AL
Sarah E. Hicks 24 "
John W. 2 "
In the 1860 Census the James B. Hicks family was occupying Household No. 1116. on one side of them was George and Nancy Hicks Vickers in Household No. 1117 and on the other side was the Presnall family in Household No. 1115.
The 1870 Census listed the family the same way, with the addition of another child:
James B. Hicks 37 B. Georgia
Sarah 34
John W. 12
Ambrose 10
James B. Hicks was not born in Alabama, as stated in the 1860 Census - he was born in Georgia, as the 1870 Census stated, as well as the 1900 census, listed below.
The date of Sarah E. Presnall Hicks' death is not known, nor her place of burial. However, on March 27, 1887, J. B. Hicks married Mary Clarke. James and his second wife were listed in the 1900 Clarke County Census, Vol. 11, Sheet 2, Precinct 10, Grove Hill, as follows:
James E. Hicks age 67 B. Feb. 1833 in GA
Mary J. 53 March 1847 in AL
Julia P. Clarke 46 Feb. 1855 in AL
Judy Rutledge Larrimore, descendant of James Bishop Hicks, stated that James and his second wife had no children. She also said that Mary J. Clarke had another sister, Jane Clarke Rutledge, besides Julia P. Clarke listed in the 1900 Census.
563
It is believed that James Bishop Hicks and his first wife had only two children.
1. John Westward Hicks, oldest child of James Bishop Hicks and Sarah E. Presnall, was born in 1857, according to the 1860 Census. There is a tombstone in Old Salem Cemetery with an inscription which fits John and one that is possible for his wife.
John W. Hicks M.E. Hicks
Born October 8, 1857 Born October 30, 1856
Died July 26, 1901 Died November 6, 1934
Judy Rutledge Larrimore said that John W. Hicks married Emma Robertson.
The 1880 Clarke County Census Record, Gates Beat listed the family as follows:
John W. Hicks Age 22 B. GA
Emma Hicks 23 B. AL
John W. Hicks, Jr. 1 "
Lily Ann Wright 5
In the 1900 Clarke County Census, Vol. 11, Sheet 18, Precinct 3, Jackson, John and Emma are listed with eight more children. Their oldest son, John W. Hicks, Jr., was 21 in 1900 and was out of the home.

B. W. Rus (Rux?) Hicks, born in May, 1883. When John W. Hicks' estate was settled in 1905, this second son's name was given as "W. R." and was out of the home.
C. Rivers Hicks, born May 1885. There is a Clarke County Marriage Records for J. Rivers Hicks to Mrs. Susie R. Williamson on May 6, 1922. It is possible that this is Rivers Hicks, son of John Westward Hicks, Sr. and his wife, Emma Robertson. If so, the bride may be Susie Mae Rogers, who was married first to Connie Lee Williamson on October 19, 1913.
When John W. Hicks' estate was settled in 1905, this third son was listed simply as "Rivers Hicks" and was out of the home.
D. Marshall Hicks, born February, 1887. He was listed in the Estate Settlement or Division, as Marshall, under fourteen years old.
E. Haywood Hicks, born in March of 1889. There is a Marriage Record for Haywood H. Hicks to Etta M. Rodgers on December 21, 1910.
When his father's estate was settled, his age was given as "over fourteen", with no middle name.
F. D. M. Hicks, born in April of 1891. Dock was over fourteen when his father's estate was settled in 1905.
G. Annie Hicks, born in Novemer of 1893. She was under the age of fourteen in 1905 when her father's estate was settled.

When his father's estate was settled in 1905 Carlee's age was given as "under fourteen".
I. Hosea Hicks, born in November of 1898. He was listed as "under fourteen" when his father's estate was settled.
The estate settlement paper listed Robert Hicks as a child of J. W. and Emma Hicks, under 21 but over 14 years old, but he was not listed in the 1900 Census with his parents.

2. Ambrose Bryant Hicks, second son of James Bishop Hicks and Sarah E. Presnall, was born in 1860. Judy Rutledge stated he married Mary Eve Gates, and this is proved by Clarke County Marriage Records. They married on November 22, 1881, at the home of James Hicks.
There are tombstones in Old Salem Cemetery which read as follows:

FABIUS HAYWOOD HICKS
Fabius Haywood Hicks was the ninth child and fifth son of Willis Bishop Hicks and his first wife, Dorothy B. Nance. Fabius was born September 5, 1835, as recorded in the Willis Bishop Hicks Bible.
The Hicks Family Bible is in the possession of Mrs. Annie Lee Sellers McHaney, granddaughter of Willis Bishop Hicks, and wife of Grady J. McHaney, Dickinson, Alabama. This Bible was given to Mrs. McHaney by her mother, Emma Delia Hicks Sellers who was the youngest daughter of Willis Bishop Hicks.
According to Rev. T. H. Ball, in his book Clarke County Alabama and Its Surroundings, Willis Bishop Hicks moved his family to Alabama in 1836, when Fabius Haywood Hicks was just a baby.
At the time of the 1860 Census, Clarke County, Fabius was listed as head of his household:
Fabius Hicks age 22 born in Georgia
Julia A. Hicks age 18 born in Clarke County
Allie D. Hicks age 3 born in Clarke County
Samuel G. Hicks age 1 born in Clarke County
Odom has Fabius in the home of Bishop & Susan at time of 1860 Census. Julia A. Hicks, above, is a sister of Fabius and Samuel and Allie are their half-brother and half-sister. Why were they in the home with Fabius at the time of the 1860 Census?
Fabius must have moved to Georgia soon after 1860 as he enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a Private on June 11, 1861. He was listed on the Muster Roll of Co. D, 19th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee. He was promoted to lst Lt on February 10, 1863 and approximately a year later he was made Captain, on January 11, 1864. He was wounded in June of that same year while at Petersburg, VA. He received a gunshot wound in his left leg and also developed typhoid fever.
Fabius was on leave from his military service on December 24 1863, as he married Emma L. Carlton on that date, recorded in Book A, Page 155m Spalding Co. Ga Marriage Records.
The 1870 Census, First District of Coweta County, Georgia, Dwelling #37, lists the family as follows:
Fabius Haywood Hicks age 34 Born in Georgia
Emma L. Hicks age 24
Elbert C, Hicks age 4
575
Willis P. Hicks age ten months
At the time of the 1880 Census, District 534 of Pike County, GA Dwelling 103, Sheet 36, the family is listed as follows:
Fabius Haywood Hicks age 44 Born in Georgia
Emma Hicks age 33
Elbert (Ethelbert) C.Hicks age 14 Born in Georgia
James C. Hicks age 8 Born in Georgia
Alexander Hicks age 6 Born in Georgia
Willis must have died sometime between 1870 and 1880.
Sometime between 1880 and 1900, Fabius moved to Alabama. His wife Emma may have died in Georgia because the 1900 Census of Precinct #3, Hanceville, Blount Co. AL listed a wife with a different name - Surrance C. Hicks. She was Surrance Clementine Carlisle, whom he married on August 27, 1894. She was born October 15, 1843.
Fabius Haywood Hicks, age 63, born Sept.1836 in GA
Surrance C. Hicks age 57, born Oct. 1841 in GA
Alexander B. Hicks age 26, born Mar. 1876 in GA
Mary E. Carlisle, sister-in-law of F. H. Hicks
In nearby Cullman County for the same 1900 Census, was listed Fabius' son, Ethelbert, age 34. James C. Hicks, another son, was listed as age 28.
The 1910 Census, District 23, Sheet 16, Cullman County, AL listed only Fabius and his wife, Surrance C. Hicks. All the children were out of the home by that time. His age was 75 and hers 65.
On April 23, 1896, Fabius applied for a pension because of his service in the CSA. He stated that he was not engaged in any business and that his taxable property consisted of 40 acres of land and a clock. However, on the very next page he stated that he owned 10 acres of land in Cullman County, valued at $100.00, plus a three-room frame house.
on October 28, 1912, Fabius Hicks, Hanceville, Alabama, wrote a letter to Elder R. C. Hicks, Sulphur Springs, TX, in which he stated that his father, Willis B. Hicks, had settled in Clarke County, Alabama, and that he (W.B.) had four sons: Benjamin, James, Fabius and Josiah. On November 17, 1912, he wrote his cousin another letter in which he mentioned other family members (see attached copies of these letters).
Fabius Haywood Hicks died on February 28, 1918, and is buried in Hopewell Cemetry, Hanceville, Cullman County, Alabama.
576
On April 12, 1918 his widow, S. C. Hicks, applied for a widow's pension. She lived five more years, dying on June 25, 1923, and is also buried in Hopewell Cemetery. She was Surrena Carlisle, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Carlisle.
The Carlisle family was listed in the 1850 Census of Randolph County, Alabama as follows:
John Carlisle
Elizabeth Carlisle
Serana Carlisle age 7
Mary Carlisle age 5
John Carlisle age 3
Sarah Carlisle age 1
Surrena's mother, sister and brother are also buried in Hopewell Cemetery:

3. James C. Hicks, third son of Fabius Haywood Hicks and wife Emma, was born in January of 1872 in Georgia. He married Georgia Ann Cynthia Grimmett, according to Vol. 2, p.162, Cullman County Marriage Records.
The 1900 Cullman Co. Census listed the family as follows:
James C. Hicks born in Georgia in 1872
Georgia Ann Cynthia 11 " Alabama in 1875

The 1910 Cullman Co. Census listed them thus:

Hollis was not listed in 1910 so he was evidently deceased.

1. Dorothea J. Hicks, oldest child of Josiah and Lucinda, was born in 1859, according to the 1860 Census. She was married to Thomas Edderds Bradford on December 6, 1877 at Nettlesboro by W. H. DeWitt. The spelling of Thomas' middle name was given to me by a descendant.
Thomas, son of Nathaniel Bradford and his second wife, Sarah Drury, was born may 30, 1854 and died May 4, 1932.
Dorothea (spelled "Dareetha" by later generations) was evidently called "Dollie". She was born July 2, 1857 and died August 27, 1941. She and Thomas and their young son are buried in Old Salem Cemctery, Scyrene.
The following list of the fifteen children of Dolly J. Hicks and Thomas E. Bradford was given to me by Linda Ott Dozier, a great granddaughter of theirs, as well as Elwis Benson, a great grandson. The Benson list was a zeroxed copy from Elwis Benson and was almost illegible in places. I have transcribed it to the best of my ability.

JULIA ANN HICKS
Julia Ann Hicks, eleventh child and fifth daughter of Willis Bishop Hicks and his first wife, Dorothy B. Nance, was born in Clarke County, AL on October 2, 1840 and died November 18, 1903.
Julia Ann married James J. Haskew on April 19, 1865. The wedding took place at the home of her father, W. B. Hicks and the officiant was Z. L. Bettis, Judge of Probate.
The 1860 Census of Clarke County listed James J. Haskew in the home of his mother.
Susan P. Haskew Age 50 Born in SC
James J. Haskew 22 Born in Clarke Co.
Charles H. Gates 18 "
The 1870 Census of Clarke County listed J. J. Haskew family as follows:
Real Estate Personal Pro.
J. J. Haskew Age 33 $300 $300
Julia Haskew 31
Susan 4
Oliver 3
Homer 1
Susanna Haskew 65
According to this 1860 Census, James Haskew was born in 1838. There is a tombstone in Old Salem Cemetery which reads: J. Haskew, Born January 10, 1838, Died April 20, 1914. This is probably James J. Haskew but the death date is incorrect. one of their granddaughters, Pearl Haskew Rush, Mobile, says the year of his death was 1878. As you can see by the 1880 Census below, there was a child born to them in 1880, so he cannot have died in 1878.
Julia Ann is also buried in Old Salem Cemetery, but her tombstone gives her birthdate as October 22, 1840. The Family Bible of Willis Bishop Hicks has her birth recorded as October 2nd, 1840. I myself have not seen the tombstones of Julia Ann and James J. Haskew, but they were recorded thus in a cemetery book in the Grove Hill Public Library.
The 1880 Clarke County Census, Soundex Roll 27, Gates Beat, listed the family as follows:
James Haskew, Jr. age 43 Born in AL
Julia Ann Haskew 41 it

Susan L. Haskew 14
Howard H. Haskew 10
William James Haskew 8
Frank P. Haskew 6

The Civil War Pension Records of Clarke County show that a J. A. Haskew, the widow of J. J.Haskew, Pvt. Co. K, 23rd Regiment, who died December 19, 1881, made application for a pension and gave her address as P. 0. Vashti. At first I thought this could not be our Julia Ann and James, but after talking with Pearl Haskew Rush in Mobile, and hearing from her that her grandfather died long before her father and mother were married, I have decided that James died either in or 1881. Julia was left at age 40, with six children to raise.
1. Susan L. Haskew, oldest daughter of James J. Haskew and Julia Ann Hicks, was born in 1866, according to the 1880 Clarke County Census. She married Robert Lee Fendley on January 24, 1889. They had at least one daughter:
A. Maggie Bell Fendley, born at Fulton on September 4, 1898 and died September 19, 1978; buried at New
Salem Cemetery. Maggie married Daniel Lee Hicks, son of Rufus M. Hicks and Rebecca J. Garrick, and grandson of Benjamin Franklin Hicks and his first wife, Julia Ann Allen (see Benjamin Franklin Hicks).
The data on Maggie Bell Fendley and Daniel Lee Hicks was given to me by Rebecca Sue Hicks Williams, their granddaughter.
2. Oliver Haskew, second child and oldest son of Julia Ann Ann Hicks and James J. Haskew, was born November 9, 1868 and died October 20, 1880. Oliver was buried in old Salem Cemetery, Scyrene, Alabama.
3. Howard Homer Haskew, second son of James J. Haskew and Julia Ann Hicks, was born in 1870, according to the 1880 Clarke County Census. He married Emma Jane Rutledge in 1892. She was born October 3, 1873, the daughter of LaFayette Rutledge and Laura Larrimore. (see Mary "Polly" Hicks and William Allen in the chapter on Bishop Hicks not to be confused with Willis Bishop Hicks). Emma Jane died on March 8, 1958 and was buried at Liberty Cemetery near Fulton. Homer was buried in Old Salem Cemetery, Scyrene.
Howard Homer Haskew and Emma Jane Rutledge had eight children.
