CHAPTER VI

THOMAS DAVIS

Thomas Davis may have been the third child of Enoch Davis and his wife, Elizabeth Anna DeLoach (maiden name not verified). Thomas was deceased by 1858, according to the statement given by Arthur M. Davis when Enoch's estate was settled. Arthur stated that Thomas had only one child, a daughter, over the age of 21 in 1858.

      1. Elizabeth Davis, born in Wilcox County October 13, 1828, according to her tombstone inscription in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama.

Elizabeth married W. Ressing on January 21, 1851. Their marriage is recorded in Mobile County Marriage Record Book 11, p. 116.

In the 1856 Mobile City Directory, William L. Ressing was residing on the north side of St. Michael Street between Conception and Joachim, west of Lawrence and north of Maine. His occupation was given as "turner". Webster's Dictionary says this could mean "lathe turner". Count it also mean "bridge turner"?

In 1861 William L. Ressing was still in Mobile, residing on the corner of Bayou and Massachusetts Street. He was a "turner" for P. Brown.

William died in 1881 and Elizabeth in 1889. They are buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile; their tombstone inscriptions read:

Wm. L. Ressing Eliz. Beth Ressing

Born Harrisburg, Pa. Born Wilcox County, AL

        April 7, 1819 October 13, 1828

        Died December 17, 1881 Died July 19, 1889

CHAPTER VII

ELIZA ANN DAVIS

Eliza Ann Davis was the second daughter of Enoch Davis, Sr. and wife, Elizabeth Anna DeLoach (last name not proved). She has been difficult to trace but today, June 20, 1991 the mystery surrounding her has been partially solved.

When Eliza's brother, Arthur M. Davis, listed the survivors of their father Enoch Davis, Sr., Arthur said Eliza was over the age of 21, married to James Odom and residing in Clarke County.

I found a family by this name listed in the 1860 Clarke County Census, Grove Hill Precinct, Household No. 1104:

R.Est. Per.Pro.

James Odom, farmer age 33 $15,000 $70,630 B SC

Eliza A. " 50

Creagh, Gerald 16

Creagh, Willie (f) 15

Wooten, Nettie 18

Wooten, Thomas 12

I decided that maybe Eliza Davis had been married to someone else - either a Creagh or a Wooten - before she married Odom. I even wondered if James Odom were possibly her son. Also, I was puzzled over their wealth, since I knew it had not come to Eliza from her father, Enoch Davis, Sr.

Later I discovered the account of Eliza's marriage to Gerrard W. Creagh on April 4, 1841. Then I knew why the Creagh children were in the home with her and James. In the Clarke County Marriage Records her name is given as Eliza H. but should read Eliza A.

Then I came across a Clarke County Marriage Record for Eliza A. Creagh and James A. Odom on October 30, 1851. But I still was not sure if James Odom in the 1860 Census was her husband or his son from an earlier marriage. I later learned that James Odom was the overseer on the Creagh plantation.

As I pondered over the bits and pieces of information, I suddenly remembered that Zuleika Eanes Collins had a connection with the Creagh family! The Collins and Reynolds were neighbors on Lamar Avenue here in Selma as long as Jim's parents lived. After a telephone call and a visit to Zuleika, a few pieces of the puzzle fell into place. She gave me the name of a relative in Athen, GA, with whom I have had a couple of telephone conversations. This person, Mary Margaret Creagh Wood, confirmed some of my speculations and answered a lot of my questions. She is working on material for a Creagh book and graciously shared

pertinent data on Eliza Ann Davis and Gerard Walthall Creagh.

I had, by this time, come upon an account of Eliza A. Odom's death in some Wilcox County records. The Creaghs and odoms resided in Suggsville, which is in Clarke County, but since the two counties join, it is not unusual for news from one county to be published in the other. This news item stated that Eliza was born January 11, 1805 and died June 25, 1872.

In one of the Clarke County Historical Society quarterly publications was an article listing tombstones in a Suggsville Cemetery. Eliza's tombstone reads:

Sacred to the Memory of Eliza A., Consort of G. W. Creagh. Born in Nash County, N. C. Jan. 11, 1804, Died in Clarke County, Ala. June 25, 1872.

"Toil, wealth and care were her portion here, but now he giveth his beloved sleep."

Eliza's parents came to Clarke County from Halifax County, N.C. but Nash and Halifax counties join, so maybe she WAS born in Nash County. You will note that the dates on the tombstone and in the Wilcox County news of Eliza's death are identical except for her year of birth. You will also note the absence of "Odom" on her tombstone.

Eliza Ann Davis was married to Gerard W. Creagh April 4, 1841. Marriage records of Clarke County say "Eliza H." but my Creagh source says that her middle name was "Ann". There were eight children born to Eliza and Gerard, as recorded in the Creagh Family Bible.

      1. Noval Creagh, born February 8, 1822; died on December 16, 1837. Buried in Suggsville Cemetery.

CHAPTER VIII

JOHNSON DAVIS

Johnson Davis, son of Enoch Davis, Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth Anna DeLoach (last name not proved). His exact birthdate is unknown but the 1850 Census of Wilcox County listed his age as 46, so he was born in 1804 or 1805 in North Carolina.

By the time of the 1850 Census, Johnson's first wife, Nancy Culpepper, was deceased, and he was married to her sister, Mary H. Culpepper. Wilcox County Marriage Records show that this second marriage took place June 4, 1841. If Mary's age - 25 - in the 1850 Census is correct, Johnson Davis was 21 years her senior. The family was listed as follows:

Johnson Davis, age 46 Farmer B. in NC

Mary H. Davis 25 AL

Charles L. Davis 21 "

Johnson Davis 16 "

Anne Davis 15 "

Mary M. Davis 13 "

William E. Davis 7 "

Dorson Davis 4 "

Ada Davis 10 mos. "

The two wives of Johnson Davis were daughters of Erasmus Culpepper, Sr. of Wilcox County. In the estate settlement for Erasmus, dated January 3, 1856, he named as heirs, the five children of his deceased daughter, Nancy Culpepper, as well as her sister, Mary Culpepper Davis, wife of Johnson Davis of Wilcox County, Alabama.

Johnson Davis died January 4, 1860. Probate Records in the Wilcox County Court House, Book 11, Page 599, list that as the date of his death. Also, when his father Enoch's estate was settled in 1860, Johnson was listed as "deceased".

on January 9, 1860, C. L. Davis, son of Johnson Davis, made application to the Probate Court to be appointed Administrator of the estate of Johnson Davis, deceased (see attached copy).

on the same date, Mary H. Davis, widow of Johnson Davis, relinquished her rights of administration (see attached copy).

The 1860 Wilcox County Census listed Mary H. Davis as head of Household No. 424.

CHARLES LAFAYETTE DAVIS

Charles Lafayette Davis, the oldest child of Johnson Davis and his first wife, Nancy Culpepper, was born December 13, 1828 and died May 15, 1882. He was buried in the Lower Peach Tree Cemetery, Wilcox County, AL.

Charles was named as one of the heirs to the estate of his grandfather, Erasmus Culpepper, Sr., in 1856. The estate papers said he was living in Choctaw County at the time.

By 1860, according to the Wilcox County Census, Charles had moved to Prairie Bluff and was registered in Household No. 428. His father was deceased by then and Mary H. Davis, Charles' stepmother, was registered in Household No. 424, along with Charles' brother, W. E. Davis, and his five half brothers and sisters.

R.E. Per.Pro.

Charles L. Davis, farmer Age 31 $2880 $11,355 B.AL

Martha Davis 26

Alice Shields 8

Lydia M. Shields 6

Eva Philen, Peterman, AL, says that Charles D. (?) Davis married Mrs. Martha Shields on December 6, 1859. Martha was the daughter of Riley Philen and was married to Neal Don Shields on May 27, 1849. Stephen M. Gilmore was the minister, with John A. Jackson as Security, according to Wilcox County Marriage Records. Alice and Lydia M. Shields were Martha's daughters by her former marriage.

Charles served as a Private in Co.K, 23rd Alabama Regiment, C. S. A. He was paroled at Salisbury, N. C. May 5, 1865 (see attached copies of Military Rbcords).

The 1870 Wilcox County Census listed Charles, a merchant, living alone, age 41, his real estates valued at $700 and his personal property at $1250, no doubt as a result of the War Between the States. The two Shields girls who were with Charles and Martha in 1860 were old enough to be married and out of the home by 1870. Evidently Martha was deceased by that time.

It is believed that Charles and Martha did not have children.

According to Vol. 7, p. 324, Wilcox County Marriage Records, Charles L. Davis and Mrs. Mary E. Crawford were married on January 27, 1876 by W. A. Montgomery, Minister. The ceremony took place at the home of B. D. Portis.

ROBERT THOMAS DAVIS

Robert Thomas Davis was the second son of Johnson Davis and his first wife, Nancy Culpepper. According,,to his Obituary, he was born in Wilcox County on September-'6, 183-0.

There have been some people who believe Robert Thomas Davis was the son of Arthur M. Davis, bro:,t,,her of Johnson Davis. There are several reasons why I disagree.

First, Arthur M. Davis was born July 14, 1813, according to his tombstone in the Kennedy Cemetery, Chance, AL.

According to the 1860 Census ,Clarke Co., AL. he was born in 1815, giving his age as 45. Ten years later, in the 1870 Census, he gave his age 56. All of these would make Arthur only 17 at the most, when this son was born. This is

biologically possible, but most of the men did not marry as early in life as the women did. There are of course,

exceptions to this, one being Robert Thomas Davis, who married when he was quite young.

In 1856, Robert Thomas Culpepper's estate was settled, naming the children of his deceased daughter, Nancy. Robert is one of those named.

In 1860, Robert Thomas Davis paternal grandfather, Enoch Davis, Sr.'s estate was settled. Johnson Davis was deceased by that time, and named as his heirs to inherit his share of their grandfather's estate were Charles, Robert and Mary, all residing in Wilcox County.

When I was a child, my parents, sister and I lived with my paternal grandparents in Chance. My father was born in this house, as were my sister and I. My grandparents talked a lot about the family, and even as a child, I was interested in my ancestors, so of course, I listened to every word. They never ever mentioned anything about Arthur having had another wife, much less another son named Robert Thomas.

Furthermore, Arthur and his wife, Susannah Anthony Hawkins, had a son born around 1840, named Thomas A. Davis. And in 1862 they named their last son James Robert Davis.

Robert Thomas Davis married first "quite early", Lucy A. Philen on September 9, 1849, according to Clarke County Marriage Records. Lucy, the daughter of William Philen and Louisa Luker, was born on November 1, 1831, and died on May 15, 1870, having given birth to nine children in her short life. She was eighteen years old when she married Robert and died when she was only 39 years old.

The 1860 Wilcox County Census listed the Robert T. Davis family as follows, residing at Prairie Bluff in Household No. 583.

R.E. P.Pro.

Robert T. Davis, farmer, age 27, $3840 $7130 B. AL.

Lucy A. Davis 28 "

William A. 10 "

Oliver C. 8 "

Mary I. 7 "

Robert J. 4 "

Anna V. 10 mos. "

Robert Thomas Davis served as a 2nd Lt. in Company B, 38th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He was promoted to lst Lt. on May 24, 1862, but resigned his commission on August 7, 1862. The reason he gave was that he felt incompetent to serve in in that capacity. He continued to serve his country, but as a Private in Co. B, 38th Regiment. He was wounded and admitted to Floyd House and Ocmulgee Hospitals, Macon, GA on July 29, 1864. Evidently he recovered sufficiently to resume fighting, as he was captured, but later paroled on June 2, 1865, Demopolis, AL (see attached military papers).

By the time of the 1870 Census, the War Between the States was over and Robert's wife was deceased. His financial situation was considerably changed also.

The little ten month old girl listed in the 1860 Census - Anna V. Davis - evidently was deceased before the 1870 Census.

Robert Thomas Davis married second, Sarah (Chaney) Dortch, on September 14, 1871. Sarah was the widow of Samson Dortch.

Sarah (Chaney) Dortch was the daughter of William Chaney and Sarah Philen. Sarah Philen was a sister of William Philen, the father of Lucy Ann Philen, the first wife of Robert Thomas Davis.

Sarah (Chaney) Dortch was the granddaughter of Sarah (Philen) Chaney and the great granddaughter of Peter Philen, Sr.

Robert Thomas Davis deeded the land for the church and graveyard at Independence ChurCh.It was on the old road (before the railroad came) that ran from Choctaw Corner to Pine Hill. The old Davis home was on this road about 1 mile east.

Robert died January 7, 1911. In March of that year his four surviving sons petitioned the Court to appoint Thomas W. Davis as Administrator of their father's estate (see attached copy of this paper).

Also attached is a typewritten copy of Robert's Obituary, which probably originally ran in the Clarke County Democrat.

Following is a list of Robert and Lucy's children:

OBITUARY OF ROBERT THOMAS DAVIS

Robert Thomas Davis departed this life January 7,1911. He was born in Wilcox County September 6, 1830.

While quite young he was married to Miss Lucy Philen, who died in 1870; nine children blessed this union. Later he married Miss (?) Sarah Dortch who bore him five children and died December 18, 1903. He was the father of fourteen children and the grandfather of forty-nine.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and has been for many years. He gave liberally of what he possessed to the support of the gospel. He had a poor chance at an education but had good business judgement and always did what he could for the advancement of every good cause.

He served 14 months in the Mexican War of 1846 and four years in the Civil War and was wounded twice, though not seriously. His life was spent on the farm.

He leaves eight children, four daughters and four sons to mourn his death. "The Lord does all things well" we must admit and give up our earthly possessions. He is now asleep in the arms of Jesus, no more pains, troubles and sorrow to bear. May his children not weep after him but prepare to meet him in that happy home above.

JESSE JOHNSON DAVIS

Jesse Johnson Davis, third child of Johnson Davis and his first wife, Nancy Culpepper, was 16 years old at the time of the 1850 Census, so we can assume that he was born in or around 1834. That census listed him simply as "Johnson" but in the settlement of his grandfather Erasmus Culpepper's estate he was named as "Jesse Johnson Davis of Wilcox County".

Jack Cook, Phenix City, Alabama, sent me a copy of a Probate document, Book 11, page 44, in which Johnson Davis posted bond to be appointed administrator of the estate of J. J. Davis. The county is not noted, however it was probably Wilcox County, as two of the securities named are Wilcox County names - D. H. Portis and C. C. Curtis (see attached copy of document).

The document is dated January 31, 1859, so evidently Johnsonis son, Jesse Johnson Davis, was deceased by that date. Also, he was not listed in the 1860 Census with his stepmother (also his aunt). Of course, it would have been unusual for a young man of 26 to still be in the home of his stepmother.

Handwritten document attached here in original.

ANNE DAVIS

Anne Davis, fourth child and first daughter of Johnson Davis and his first wife, Nancy Culpepper. She was fifteen years old at the time of the 1850 Wilcox County Census. So we can assume that she was born in or around the year 1835.

Anne Davis was named in her grandfather Erasmus Culpepper's estate settlement in 1856.

On January 11, 1858, Anne's father, Johnson Davis was appointed guardian of Anne Davis and her sister, Mary M. Davis. This document is in Book 10, pages 199 and 247 (see attached copy).

By the time of the 1860 Wilcox County Census, Johnson Davis was deceased and his widow Mary J. Davis was head of the household. Anne was not listed in that home in 1860. of course, she was old enough to be married by that time but no record of her marriage has been found as yet.

Note document on page 182-A. Apparently Anne Davis died young and never married.

180

MARY M. DAVIS

Mary M. Davis, fifth and last child of Johnson Davis and his first wife Nancy Culpepper, was thirteen years old at the time of the 1850 Wilcox County Census. She too was named as an heir to a share of her grandfather Erasmus Culpepper's estate in 1856.

In January of 1858, Johnson Davis applied for a settlement of the guardianship of his two daughters, Anne and Mary M. Davis.

Wilcox County Marriage Records listed the marriage of James T. Northrup and Mary M. Davis in Vol. 4, pp 230-231. The wedding took place on November 16, 1858, with D. A. Portis, Justice of Peace, officiating. The Northrup family lived near the Davis family.

on January 31, 1859, Johnson Davis appeared before the Probate Court to make final settlement of his guardianship of daughter Mary M. Davis, who was by then over the age of 21 and married to James T. Northrup. This document was filed in Book 11 on page 43. James and his bride were listed in the 1860 Wilcox Co. Census as follows"

      James T. Northrup, farmer, age 27 $3600 $6224 B. NC

      Mary M. Northrup 23 "

James T. Northrup enlisted in the Confederate States Army in 1862. He was a Sgt. in Co. B, 38th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He was captured July 22, 1864 near Atlanta, interned in a Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky, and then sent to Camp Chase, Ohio in July of 1864. He died of pneumonia in March of 1865 and was buried in Grave No. 1782, 1/3 of a mile south of Camp Chase (See attached copies of his Military Records).

The 1870 Wilcox County Census Records listed James's widow and their two children:

Mary Northrup age 29

Thomas J. Northrup 10

James W. Northrup 8

      1. Thomas J. Northrup, oldest son of Mary and James Northrup, was born in 1860. He married Nettie Smith of Wildwood, FL and had four children: Marie, Benjamin John, Marjorie and Robert. Thomas was the first "Assessor of Taxes" in Pinelles Co. FL. He was elected in 1911.

      2. James W. Northrup, born in 1862; no further information.

WILLIAM ERASMUS DAVIS

William Erasmus Davis, sixth child of Johnson Davis but first one of Johnson and Mary H. Culpepper, was born November 9, 1844. He died June 20, 1913 and was buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Clarke Co.

William Erasmus Davis served as a Private in Co. D, 38th Regiment Alabama Infantry, CSA. He enlisted in March of 1862, was a Prisoner of War in May of 1865, and was paroled at Livingston, AL on May 12, 1865.

William married the daughter of Dr. James and Nancy B. Southhall November 15, 1865 (Records of Covee M. Allen). Wilcox County, AL Marriage Records give the date as November 18, 1866 (of course, I could have mis-read it). Some family members state that her name was "Jane Cornelia" while others say "James Cornelia". I myself have seen her listed in census records as"Janey C." and "James C". She was born on September 26, 1846 and died in 1926; buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery also.

The 1870 Census Records of Wilcox County listed the family as follows:

William E. Davis age 25 B. AL

Janey C. 22 "

Elvey 8 mos. "

Enoch Davis 17 "

William and Janey's first child was Ann Geneva Davis, born in Wilcox County October 15, 1967. She lived only one month, dying November 15, 1867.

The Enoch Davis, age 17, in the home of William E. Davis in 1870, was his younger brother. Enoch was listed in the 1860 Census as being seven years old, which would make him 17 in 1870.

The family increased greatly during the next ten years, as evidenced by the 1880 Wilcox County Census Records:

William Davis, farmer age 35 B. AL

J. Cornelia 34 "

Elva 10 "

Isadora 9 "

Eska 7 "

Satellia 6 "

James 4 "

Henry 2 "

Woodie E. 4 mos. "

Ethelbert Davis 24 "

186

The above Ethelbert Davis was a younger brother of William E. Davis.

After the 1880 Census, William and Janey would have four more children, making a total of thirteen children in all. These 13 children are listed in the William Erasmus Davis Family Bible which is in possession of Mrs. Edison Allen, Jackson, AL, one of the descendants.

Following is the list of the thirteen children of William Erasmus Davis and Janey C. Southall:

      1. Ann Geneva Davis

      2. Elva Davis

      3. Isadora Davis

      4. Eska Davis

Dawson Davis, seventh child of Johnson Davis, but second child by Mary H. Culpepper, was listed in the 1850 Census as being four years old. In the 1860 Census, Mary H. Davis was head of the household, Johnson having died by 1859, and Dawson is listed as being fifteen years old.

Dawson enlisted in the Confederate States Army on March 29, 1862, according to his military records (see attached copies). These same records state that he was in the infantry three years, and died August 14, 1,862. If he was still at home at the time of the 1860 Census, was in the Infantry for three years and died on August 14, 1862, there is an error somesomewhere, datewise.

At any rate, Dawson Davis was in Co. B,,38th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, and died before he was twenty years old.

ADA BYRON DAVIS

Ada Byron Davis, eighth child of Johnson Davis, but third child by his second wife, Mary H. Culpepper, was born in Wilcox County, Alabama on January 18, 1850. She was listed in the 1850 Census as being ten months old. In the 1860 Census her age was given as eleven. By that time her father was deceased and her mother was head of the household.

On February 18, 1864, J. T. Pate petitioned the court to appoint him as guardian of Johnson and Mary's four youngest children. Apparently the children's mother was deceased. The children were listed as Ada, Enoch, Abel S. and Ethelbert and they had fallen heir to $12,500.00. (See attached paper.)

Ada married in Wilcox County on March 6, 1867, Samuel Bernard (another descendant says "Benjamin") Alexander Cook. He was born in South Carolina February 11, 1841, the son of Dorus H. and Dolly A. Cook. (See attached copy of Marriage Certifiate for Ada and Alex.)

Alex Cook had a nephew, Thomas Malachi Cook, who married Addie Belle Clark, daughter of Absalom Clark and Lettie Ann Kennedy (see Kennedy Section of this book). Thomas Malachi was the son of Thomas A. Cook and Nancy Jane Stabler.

Alex served in the CSA in Co. K, 23rd Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi and while there signed an oath of allegiance never to take up arms again against the United States of America. (see attached military papers)

I was told that Ada and Alex lived in Pine Hill, but they are listed in the 1880 Wilcox County Census as residing in Lower Peach Tree:

Alex (S. B. A.) Cook Age 38 Farmer Born in SC

Ada 30 AL

Johnson 11 "

Clarence 8 "

Henley B. 7 "

Doras H. Cook 70 SC

Sometime after 1880, Alex moved his family to Columbus, GA, where he practiced medicine. Dr. Cook died November 28, 1901.

On April 25, 1905, Ada made application for a widow's pension because of her husband's service during the Civil War (see attached papers). She lived less than a year after making application, dying on January 6, 1906. She was

buried in Girard Cemetery beside her husband.

By that time nine of the children were out of the home (two were deceased and seven were either married or selfsufficient). The remaining three daughters and one son were placed in homes of the older brothers and sisters.

There were thirteen children born to Ada and Dr. Cook:

            (2) Debra Lynn Cook, born August 15, 1968.

    6. O. Hubbard Cook; may have been the fifth son of Ada and Alex Cook. Jack W. Cook, Phenix City, said his birthdate as recorded in the Cook Family Bible (September 17, 1875) is incorrect. The Bible is obviously in error, as Ada and Alex had another son (Henley B. Cook, Jack's grandfather) who was born in December of 1875. 0. Hubbard was deceased at the time of the 1880 Census, so I have placed him between Henley and Benjamin. His date of death was recorded in the Bible as November 11, 1875, and if that date is correct, then he should have been placed before Henley. Hubbard Cook was probably born in 1874.

    7. Benjamin R. Cook, son of Ada and S. B. A. Cook, was born on June 14, 1880; died April 29, 1972; buried in Girard Cemetery, Phenix City, AL (see attached copy of obituary).
