Thomas was an orphan, adopted by the Sirois family in the vicinity of Three Rivers, Canada. It is alleged by Evangaline Sirois, his oldest daughter, that his true father was a Scotsman named McKenzie (a pioneer in Canada) and his mother was an Indian squaw. There is no known documentation of this.
