John Gibbs died in Woodland Park, Colorado....a small town that he is credited as having founded. Woodland Park was originally called Manitou Park. The story that was passed down verbally was that he headed west for the gold rush and originally headed for Cripple Creek, Colorado but saw that there were just too many people there for him to have a chance.
He thought that there might be monetary gain in providing a stop and supply depot on the route and he and one other person set up just such a stop. I don't think it could have been considered a stage stop because it was mostly just travelers with animals and wagons but we have always been led to believe he actually founded the town of Woodland Park.

Eulogy by Bill Snow at Rod’s funeral:"At a time like this it is difficult to express our feelings about our friend Rod. But as I thought of Rod, I came up with five words which helped me clarify my feelings about him. One word is taken from the younger generation is "awesome." This word describes my feelings the first time I met Road at the Motor Court in the south end of Seattle. The room had a very low ceiling and I did not notice that Rod was setting on a low couch with his knees up around his chin. He started to unwind from the couch and I was looking at his belly button and the first words I said to Rod was "Yes sir." When you are dating his sister you become very cautious about getting him upset or angry.
Another word that comes to mind is "humble." Webster states that humble is 1)characterized by modesty or meekness in behavior, attitude and spirit; 2) Exhibiting deferential or submissive respect; 3) Unpretentious. But my definition of humble is one who knows the Lord and understands he is the master in his life and reflects that understanding in every day actions that he takes. Rod’s actions refelcted this understanding to his friends and family. As you get to know this tall quiet man you know that he has strength of character that does not need to be waved like a red flag. Jesus said "Anyone who exalts himself will be humble and anyone who humbles himself will be exalted. I know that Rod is being exalted right now.
Another word that comes to mind is "Action" for when it came to getting something done you could count on Rod being there to support and help. He was a very good basketball player in high school, college and after his college. One day a long time ago Tom, Ester, Elsie and myself went to watch Rod play basketball. Rod was late to the game and the coach came up to the stands and ask if I could stand in for Rod until he got there or they would forfeit. I reliantly said yes and I played about five minutes huffing and puffing up and down the floor. Was I ever glad to see a man of "action" appear and go into the game. I understand that there are two persons of "action" when they attend a Sonics game. I have witnessed the trials and tribulations that Rod and Sue have gone through over the years and I know that without "action" to overcome and do what is required they would have had even tougher times.
The word "deacon" comes to mind when I think about Rod for he was one who served others. He was a salesman and store owner in the toy business. He served his family by helping his children and wife whenever called upon. He served the people in the apartments where they lived. He served the people in the hardward store where he worked. He shared his knowledge of how to fix, mend and repair the broken things of this world. He shared his wisdom and knowledge when called upon by family and friends. The Bible tells us the first deacons were selected to take care of the widows of the church. I believe that Rod cared for the people he came in contact with.
The word "love" comes to mind when I think of Rod. For I think Rod carried out the second commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. To love others as yourself requires that you must love yourself and love who you are. I believe that Rod loved who he was and what he stood for in his life. He loved his wife and he loved his children and his extended family. In order to accomplish the above I believe Rod loved the Lord who gave him the ability to love others.
Jesus said "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house; if it were not, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you." I believe that Rod is seated at the banquet table set for him by our Lord."

Wedding: Ula and Walter decided to get married...Ula and her sister Madge came from Colorado for the wedding. Madge went off on a day trip but was gone longer than they expected and was nowhere to be found when they wanted to go get married. Walter’s father, Charles told the couple "not to let Madge’s foolishness get in the way of you two getting married. You just go and get married and I will be your Dutch Uncle"...and so they did. They went down to the King County courthouse and got married and when Madge returned she was very upset to find that she had missed the whole thing. Ula told this story to her daughter, Patti and said that Madge just "cried and cried and cried." Madge had brought a special dress and everything for the wedding and had planned on being in her sister’s wedding.
