Velona Batchelor. Parents: Patrick
Eli Batchelor and Nellie Roseanne Walter. Spouse: Joe Clark. Children were: Gary Joe Clark, Robert Lynn Clark. Infant Batchelor. Parents: George Richard Batchelor and Catherine D. Ryan. Isaac Batchelor was born in Feb 1843 in Nash Co., NC. He died in Aug 1862 in Richmond, VA. Parents: Willis Batchelor and Martha Williams. Isley Batchelor was born about 1792 in Nash Co., NC. Parents: Joseph Batchelor and ? McCoy. Spouse: John Vaughn. John Vaughn and Isley Batchelor were married on 3 Dec 1823 in Nash Co., NC. Isley Batchelor was born about 1814. Parents: Joseph Batchelor and Elizabeth Deans. J. W. Batchelor. Parents: George Batchelor and Dolly Whitbey. Spouse: M. E. Spurlock. J.R. Batchelor was born on 24 Apr 1932. He died on 20 Feb 1997. Goolsby, TIMBERLAND HOME (cited in file of George Richard Batchelor) says that the Grant Co. Museum has a 22 June 1979 taped interview with a J.R. Batchelor. Could this be the J.R. Batchelor of the interview? Date of death and full name of JRB is from GEDCOM file of Margaret Byrd cited in file of George W. Schoggin. Parents: John William Batchelor and Vinnie Prince. Jabez Batchelor was born about 1662.32 Parents: Richard Batchelor and Ann Biggs. James Batchelor. Parents: Wright Stephen Batchelor and Charity Tucker. James Batchelor was born about 1689 in Norfolk Co., VA.32 He died about 3 Mar 1754 in Norfolk Co., VA.97 Parents: Joseph Batchelor and Mary. Spouse: Elizabeth. James Batchelor and Elizabeth were married.32 James Batchelor was born about 1768 in Edgecombe Co., NC.97 He died on 9 Feb 1821 in Nash Co., NC.69,97 My source for the dates of birth and death of James Batchelor, and his spouse, is BATCHELOR FAMILY, pp. 19, 47. On this source, see file of Samuel Batchelor. Williams states that birth order (and thus presumably ages) of Samuel Batchelor's children is based on censuses and other sources. Since Samuel Batchelor was apparently living in Edgecombe Co., N.C., in 1768, James Batchelor would have been born there. James Batchelor died by 9 Feb. 1821 in Nash Co. On that date, his wife Ann inventoried his estate, as its executor. The estate names his heirs (see Joseph M. Watson, ABSTRACTS OF EARLY RECORDS OF NASH CO., N.C. [Durham, N.C.: Seeman, 1975), for a transcript. James Batchelor was an executor of his father's estate, along with his brother Wright Stephen Batchelor. If the sons are listed in the will by order of birth, James was evidently the oldest of Samuel Batchelor's sons. For details on Samuel Batchelor's estate records, see file of Samuel Batchelor. On the 1790 census, James Batchelor is enumerated on the same page with his father and grandfather Stephen Batchelor in Nash Co. On the 1800 census, he is on the 1800 census, he is on the page following that on which his father appears. On the 1810 census, he is adjacent his father Samuel. On these censuses, see the files of Samuel and Stephen Batchelor. James Batchelor does not appear in the record of the sale of his grandfather Stephen Batchelor's estate. Since he had died before the estate of his father Samuel Batchelor was settled, he does not appear in this estate record, either, though Samuel Batchelor's will had named him an executor of the estate. However, James Batchelor is listed as an heir when Samuel Batchelor's estate was finally settled on 6 Dec. 1828; this record must refer to the heirs of James, who inherited in the right of their deceased father. James Batchelor appears in several Nash Co. deeds of which I have transcripts. On 13 Nov. 1795, Dempsey Deans of Wayne Co. sold to JB of Nash Co. 275 acres on the south of Little Sapony Creek, adj. Green Hill. The deed was wit. by Robert and Elizabeth Creekmore, James Batchelor's aunt and uncle (Nash Co. DB 6, p. 176). On 3 Sept. 1806, James Batchelor bought a Negro girl from William Batchelor of Halifax Co., through the hands of Aquila Morris (Nash Co. DB 5, p. 33). I am not sure which William Batchelor this is--perhaps James' brother. James Batchelor also appears in a 23 Dec. 1812 deed of George Sutton of Nash Co. to William Lindsey, William Boddie, Willis Boddie, John Cooper, John Deans, and Pridgen Manning. The deed was for an acre of land to these men to erect a Methodist church, of which they were trustees. The deed transaction mentions tha the land adjoined that of James Batchelor, George Sutton, and George Boddie (formerly Green Hill's land) (Nash Co. DB 5, p. 384). JB died testate, with a will dated 20 Apr. 1820, naming wife Ann and children Cullen (the Tucker tract), James M. (land), Joseph (JB's plantation), Samuel, Cherry, Lizey Ann, Jerusha Whitly, and Rhoda Matthis. Exrs. were wife Ann and Richard Holland. The will was wit. by Abijah Pridgen (JB's uncle), Joseph Batchelor, and David Pridgen (see Nash Co. Unrecorded Wills 1790-1922, LDS microfilm). On 9 Feb. 1821, the estate was inventoried by Ann Batchelor. On 23 Sept. 1825, another inventory was filed by W.W. Boddie, special admr. with the will annexed (had Ann died?). Sales were held 11 Oct. and 11 Nov. 1825, and filed Nov. term 1826 (see ibid.). May term 1826, JB's 8 slaves were divided among heirs Leusy A., Joseph, Willie Whitley, Joel Mathews, Samuel, Cullen, and Cherry (Nash Co. DB 14, #113, p. 23). Since descendants of this Batchelor line married into the Rackley family, information about James Batchelor is to be found in Eloise F. Potter and Timothy W. Rackley, RACKLEY: A COLONIAL SOUTHERN FAMILY (Zebulon, N.C.: Potter Publications, n.d.). Potter Publications is at 9433 Baker Rd., Zebulon, NC 27957. BATCHELOR FAMILY, pp. 47f, gives several generations of this family. I have only included the children of James and Ann Batchelor. This is my primary source for the information I have recorded about them and their spouses. Where I have used other sources, I note that. - [Bill Linsey] Parents: Samuel Batchelor and Margaret. Spouse: Ann Tucker. James Batchelor and Ann Tucker were married about 1780 in Nash Co., NC.97 Children were: Rhoda Batchelor, Jerusha Batchelor, Cullen Batchelor, Samuel Batchelor, James Miller Batchelor, Joseph Batchelor, Charity Batchelor, Leacy Ann Batchelor. James Batchelor was born about 1838. Parents: Bennett Batchelor and Susanna Ready. James C. Batchelor was born about 1832 in NC. Parents: Wright Stephen Batchelor and Sarah. James Clifford Batchelor was born on 2 Feb 1890 in Redfield, Jefferson Co., AR. He died on 7 Sep 1971 in Menard, Menard Co., TX. Parents: Edward Eli Batchelor and Mary Paralee Bagley. James Decalvin Batchelor was born about 1844 in Hardin Co., TN. He died on 20 Nov 1861 in Columbus, KY. My date and place of birth of James D. Batchelor are from the 1850-60 census. In 1850, he is enumerated in the home of his parents in Hot Spring Co. In 1860, he appears again in this household, though his age is two years less than it should be. He also seems to be enumerated in 1860 in the household of his uncle J.B. Monk in Pine Bluff, Jefferson Co., where he is listed as an apprentice blacksmith, aged ten years older than the James Decalvin Batchelor of the household of Moses and Minerva Batchelor in 1860. This listing has his name merely as J. Decal. The Hot Spring Co. entry is 14 August, the Jefferson Co. one 14 August. For census details, see files of Moses B. Batchelor and John B. Monk. In the microfilmed compiled CSA soldier records held by the Arkansas History Commission, I find a record for a James D. Batchelor who is clearly James Decalvin Batchelor. J.D. Batchelor enlisted in Co. E, 12th Ark. Infantry at Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on 20 July 1861. He was killed in battle at Columbus, Kentucky, on 20 Nov. the same year. On the same day on which James D. Batchelor enlisted, and at the same place, his first cousins William, Pleasant, and Wilson Byrd also enlisted in the same unit. I am not sure where the name James Decalvin comes from. On the 1850 census in Hardin Co., Tennessee, in 9th civil district (where the Batchelor, Byrd, Monk, and Cherry families lived) there is a Robertson family that appears to use this name. This is the family of Richard Robertson, who has a son Calvin D. Another son of this family, Mansel Robertson, came to Jefferson Co., Arkansas, at the same time that the Monk family moved there, and married Nancy L. Monk, a daughter of Strawhorn Monk and Talitha Cherry there. I suspect that this Robertson family is related to the Robinson/Robertson family of Louisa Waters Robinson, who was Moses B. Batchelor's second wife. The Richard Robertson census entry is on p. 211, dwel. 39, fam. 39, of Hardin Co., Tenn., 1850 census. Parents: Moses B. Batchelor and Minerva Monk. James Decalvin Batchelor was born about 1863 in Fenter Township, Hot Spring Co., AR. He died in 1895 in Poyen, Grant Co., AR. James Decalvin Batchelor's tombstone states that he was born in 1867. This conflicts with his year of birth as per the 1870-80 census, which has him born in 1863-4. For details, see files of John Wilson Batchelor and John Richard Batchelor. J.D. Batchelor appears in Fenter Township, Grant Co., on the 1884 tax list. James D. Batchelor continues to appear on the Fenter Township tax list in 1885 and 1887; all entries suggest that he was a small farmer, like other Batchelor men of the area. JDB is listed in the Grant Co. Warrant Book for a warrant dated 5 Oct. 1888, in the amount of 50 cents, warrant # 501, filed 16 Oct. 1888. JDB is apparently on the 1890 tax list for Poyen school distr. (#39), Fenter twp., Grant Co.: see Threet, 1890 RECONSTRUCTED, p. 39. All my information about the wife and children of James D. Batchelor comes from the records of Mrs. Claude Ragland of Malvern, Arkansas (for details, see file of John Wilson Batchdlor). James Decalvin Batchelor appears to have been named for his uncle of the same name, who died as a CSA soldier. Parents: John Wilson Batchelor and Talitha Emeline Robinson. Spouse: Rosalee Anderson. James Decalvin Batchelor and Rosalee Anderson were married on 14 Feb 1889 in Hot Spring Co., AR. Children were: John William Batchelor, Elbert Monroe Batchelor, Albert James Batchelor, Jane Callie Batchelor. James Franklin Batchelor. Parents: Charles James Batchelor and Nona Mytrle Barnett. James Franklin Batchelor was born on 1 Jul 1870 in Orion, Grant Co., AR. He died on 7 Jul 1874 in Orion, Grant Co., AR. He was buried in Orion Cemetery in Grant Co., AR. All the information I have on this child is from his tombstone in the Batchelor family plot in Orion Cemetery. Since my grandmother Hattie Batchelor could recall stories about a sibling named Franklin who had died before her birth, I assume that the James F. Batchelor buried in Orion Cemetery is the "little Franklin" about whom my grandmother spoke. Parents: George Richard Batchelor and Catherine D. Ryan. James Henry Batchelor. Parents: William Batchelor. James Henry Batchelor. Parents: William F. Batchelor and Rosa Ann Anderson. James Lemuel Batchelor was born on 16 Dec 1881 in Crawford Co., AR. Parents: Henry John Batchelor and Rhoda Evans. Spouse: Mahala P. Cockrell. James Wiley Batchelor and Mahala P. Cockrell were married on 11 Jan 1869 in Nash Co., NC.113 James Wiley Batchelor was born in Nov 1856 in Nash Co., NC.380 He died about 1931.380 Parents: Vincent F. Batchelor and Nancy W. Bone. Jane Batchelor was born about 1659.32 Parents: Richard Batchelor and Ann Biggs. Jane Batchelor. Parents: John William Batchelor and Vinnie Prince. Spouse: Homer J. Wilson. Children were: Carolyn M. Wilson, Kenneth E. Wilson. Jane Callie Batchelor was born on 19 Dec 1895 in Lenham, Grant Co., AR. For source, see file of Rosalee Anderson. If Mrs. Ragland is correct about the name of this child of James D. and Rosalee Batchelor, then this Callie Batchelor may be the CB who was baptized at Poyen Missionary Baptist church, Grant Co., Arkansas, on 25 July 1914, according to church minutes. According to Harold Dean Davis, Grace Batchelor Martin of Malvern, Arkansas, says that Callie Batchelor and her husband moved to California. On Harold Dean Davis, see file of Moses B. Batchelor. Parents: James Decalvin Batchelor and Rosalee Anderson. Spouse: Rands Carpenter. Children were: Edgar Carpenter, Frances Lee Ella Carpenter, Novella Carpenter. Jane Elizabeth Batchelor was born on 7 Dec 1873 in Fenter Township, Grant Co., AR. She died on 6 May 1933 in Poyen, Grant Co., AR. Information about the dates of Jane Elizabeth Batchelor's birth and death was supplied by Mrs. Claude Ragland and Mr. Harold Dean Davhs (for details, see files of John Wilson Batchelor and of Mary Louisa Batchelor. Dates are from her tombstone; for source, see file of Mary Louisa Batchelor. Both Mrs. Ragland and Mr. Davis also gave me the name of Jane Elizabeth Batchelor's husband; Mrs. Ragland states that JEB and her husband had 7 children, but did not have their names. Jane Elizabeth Batchelor is enumerated in her father's household on the 1880 census, but her age on this census is two years younger than that given me by Mrs. Ragland and Mr. Davis (for census details, see file of John Wilson Batchelor). Minutes of the Poyen Missionary Baptist church stated that E. Jane Batchelor Webb was baptized on 12 July 1889, and died on 6 May 1943 (note that this source has her death a decade later than my other two sources). All my information about the children of Merida Alvin Webb and Jane Elizabeth Batchelor is from information supplied to me in January, 1995, by Harold Dean Davis; on this source, see file of Moses B. Batchelor. This is my source for the spouses and children of these children of MAW and JEB. Parents: John Wilson Batchelor and Talitha Emeline Robinson. Spouse: Merida Alvin Webb. John Batchelor and Sarah Deane were married.32 John Batchelor was born about 1769 in Edgecombe Co., NC. He died before Aug 1849 in Nash Co., NC. My source for the dates of birth and death of JB is BATCHELOR FAMILY, pp. 19, 52. For details about this source, see file of Samuel Batchelor. Though BATCHELOR FAMILY gives Nash Co. as JB's place of birth, Nash was not formed from Edgecombe until 1777, so JB would presumably have been born in Edgecombe Co., since that is where his father was apparently living in 1777. Nash Co. states that John Batchelor died testate. I do not have a copy of the will. Watson, ABSTRACTS, has information about the estate sale on 7 June 1849; on this source, see file of James Batchelor. RACKLEY FAMILY (see below) says that the will is dated 30 Sept. 1848, and was probated Aug. 1849 (p. 153). The sale was held on 7 June 1849 and a current account was filed at May term 1850 by Wright Batchelor, exr. BATCHELOR FAMILY implies that Samuel Batchelor's will does not name John Batchelor as a son. This not correct. The will lists John after James, who is explicitly named as SB's son; the will suggests that John was SB's second son. John Batchelor appears on the 1790 census near his father and grandfather Samuel and Stephen Batchelor; in 1800 and 1810, he is enumerated very near his brother James, and close to his father Samuel (on these censuses, see files of Samuel and Stephen Batchelor). On 15 Dec. 1794, John Batchelor bought from Abner Lewis 150 acres in Nash Co. on Saponey Creek and the Horse Pen Branch. The deed was witnessed by Robert Creekmore and Daniel Batchelor, JB's uncles, and by Mark Wall (Nash Co. DB 6, p. 77). On the same day, John Batchelor witnessed the sale of 100 acres by his uncle Stephen Batchelor to Abner Lewis of 100 acres on Saponey Creek on the north side of Tar River; the other witnesses of this deed were Robert Creekmore and Daniel Batchelor (ibid., p. 99). At his father's estate sale, John Batchelor bought a trowel and a trunk. For details on this source, see file of Samuel Batchelor. Since descendants of this Batchelor line were intermarried with the Rackley family, information about John Batchelor is also to be found in RACKLEY: A SOUTHERN COLONIAL FAMILY. On this source, see file of James Batchelor. BATCHELOR FAMILY, pp. 52f, gives quite a few generations of John Batchelor's descendants. I have listed only his children and their spouses. BATCHELOR FAMILY is my primary source for the information I record in their files. When I have used other sources, I make note of them. - (Bill Lindsey) Bill mentions above that he did not have a copy of John's will. Since that time, Frank Dawes has provided me with a copy of John's will that he found on LDS microfilm 419419, page 517. I have transcribed that will from the copy Frank sent me and it can be seen under the heading "Wills" on the start page of this web site. - (Allan Lantman) Parents: Samuel Batchelor and Margaret. Spouse: Elizabeth Rackley. John Batchelor and Elizabeth Rackley were married about 1790 in Nash Co., NC. Children were: Elizabeth Batchelor, Batchelor, Sarah Batchelor, Nicey Batchelor, Henry John Batchelor, Berryman Batchelor, Edith Batchelor, Wright Batchelor, Mourning Batchelor. |
