Alice Batchelor was born about 1871 in TX. Parents: Edward Eli Batchelor and Mary.

Alice Catherine Batchelor was born on 15 Jul 1875 in Orion, Grant Co., AR. She died on 17 Feb 1936 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson Co., AR. She was buried in Orion Cemetery in Grant Co., AR. My information about Alice Catherine Batchelor is mostly from family sources--from stories my grandmother Hattie Batchelor Simpson or her children have told me, from information Alice Batchelor's children have shared with me, from her tombstone record, etc. In addition to her tombstone and obituary, my source for ACB's dates of birth and death is the memorial book of her husband; see his file on this source.

Alice Catherine Batchelor was named for her mother Catherine Ryan. I am not sure why she was also named Alice, unless this name results from George R. Batchelor's grandmother, Alcie Odom. Other of Alcie Odom Batchelor's descendants named daughters Alcie in her memory.

I have pictures of Alice Batchelor as a young girl (see file of Hattie Batchelor Simpson), as well as an old woman. She appears to have had the Irish appearance of her mother--black hair and very blue eyes, with pale complexion. She was also somewhat heavy in her old age.

My grandmother often told a story about a time when her sisters Alice and Fannie had gone to a dance as young girls. They were reported to the Orion Baptist church, of which they were members, and brought before the church to confront the error of their ways. Aunt Fannie, who was always very mild and meek, repented, but Aunt Alice told the congregation that, if another dance took place in the neighborhood, she would most certainly be there. But at some point, Aunt Alice must have made her peace with the church, because my family says that, in later life, she was a stalwart and very devout Baptist.

This family is on the 1910 census in Barraque Twp., Jefferson Co., AR (p. 6A, ED 93, line 44, fam. 128/dwel. 129; 10 May). This is my source for Thomas Murdock's age and place of birth. In the household are children Marie, 7, May, 6, Jewel, 5, Roy, 3, and Theo, 10 months, with a James Batchelor, aged 26, whom I cannot place. Next door is the family of Val Batchelor, brother of ACB.

On the back of a picture of the family of ACB and her husband Thomas M. Murdock sent to me in 1996 by their granddaughter Patsy Ruth McCaskill Westmoreland, someone has written that the picture was taken at their house, which was the first house west of the Negro church in Redfield.

Aunt Alice and Uncle Tommy lived in Redfield, near my grandparents, so my mother and her siblings grew up very close to Aunt Alice and her children. They speak of Aunt Alice as a kind and motherly woman, who took care of them when their mother was at work. After my grandfather's death, Aunt Alice took my mother to care for her during the days when my grandmother was occupied with making preparations for the burial of her husband. My mother's sister Aunt Billie recalls that Aunt Alice was so much their mother, that she would not hesitate to whip them, if need arose. On one occasion, Aunt Billie had heard some boy in the road say, "Shoot, your tail's on fire." The saying fascinated Aunt Billie, and she repeated it over and over, while staying at Aunt Alice's. Each time, Aunt Alice would say, "Darling, don't say that. It's ugly. Auntie will have to whip you." Undeterred, Aunt Billie continued to repeat the "ugly" words until Aunt Alice whipped her.

I have a copy of a 13 August 1911 letter that mentions Alice Batchelor. The letter is from Janie Byrd McBurnett to her Aunt Melissa Byrd Robinson, and was found by Janie McBurnett's daughter Elsie Hodges of Pine Bluff in the old trunk of Melissa Robinson. The letter states that the Baptist church at Orion, about seven miles from Redfield, where Janie McBurnett was living, had had a revival for the last several weeks, and Janie McBurnett had attended. JM mentions that she had eaten dinner with Alice Bachelor Murdock during the revival (Janie McBurnett and Alice Murdock were cousins; Janie's grandmother Hannah Delaney Batchelor and Alice's grandfather Moses B. Batchelor were siblings). Janie's letter states that she had seen all the family at Alice's, including even Lila. Ed Batchelor, brother of George Richard Batchelor, was there. Aunt Alice's children tell me that Aunt Alice kept "Old Uncle Ed" on and off in his old age; he developed dropsy, and became so large that he had to wear Aunt Alice's dresses.

I am told that Alice Batchelor Murdock died quite suddenly of a stroke. She was apparently doing housework at the home of her daugher Reedy, and visiting with her family, when she fell dead.

I have an obituary of ACB which is from the 18 Feb. 1936 PINE BLUFF COMMERCIAL. This says she was aged 60 at death, wife of Tom M. Murdock, and died at 5:30 P.M. at the home of her daughter Mrs. C.H. McCaskill, 108 Elm St., Pine Bluff, after an illness of 6 weeks. She was a member of Redfield Baptist church, and had lived in Redfield 31 years, and in Orion before that. Barnaby Batchelor was born about 1776 in Edgecombe Co., NC. He died in 1815 in Nash Co., NC. BATCHELOR FAMILY, p. 19, states that Barnaby is listed as a son of Samuel Batchelor in SB's will. This is not correct. For details on these two sources, see file of Samuel Batchelor.

Barnaby Batchelor had died in Nash Co., N.C. by 2 Dec. 1815, when his estate was inventoried and sold (see Watson, EARLY ABSTRACTS; on this source, see file of James Batchelor). Buyers at the estate sale included Wilson, Stephen, John, and Cullen Batchelor. Since the death of Barnaby Batchelor predates the will of Samuel Batchelor, if Barnaby were Samuel's son, he would not have appeared in the will. If Barnaby were a son of Samuel, then the Stephen Batchelor of his estate sale would have been an uncle, Wilson and John brothers, and Cullen a nephew.

On the 1800 and 1810 census, Barnaby Batchelor is enumerated near the family of Samuel Batchelor, and is of an age to be a son of Samuel Batchelor.

On the basis of the census data and the estate sale of Barnaby Batchelor, I am including him as a son of Samuel, though I must stress that I do not have positive proof that this is the case.

Barnaby Batchelor's estate shows that he had son Elisha. Parents: Samuel Batchelor and Margaret.

Children were: Elisha Batchelor.

Barsheba Batchelor was born about 1766 in Nash Co., NC. She died about 1839 in Whitley Co., KY. My primary source is BATCHELOR FAMILY, pp. 16, 206. Barsheba Batchelor is named, by her married name, in the will of Stephen Batchelor. Williams states that he is estimating the dates of birth of SB's children on the basis of their ages at death. For these sources, see file of Stephen Batchelor.

The Creekmore sources cited in the file of Elizabeth Batchelor, also have information on Barsheba Batchelor and her husband. All the sources cited above give the descendants of Barsheba Batchelor. BATCHELOR FAMILY has descendants for several generations; I have included only the children of Ballentine and Barsheba Creekmore. All my information about them and their spouses comes from the sources cited above.

Williams does not state that Barsheba Batchelor died in Whitley Co., Ky., but I am assuming this, since he gives no indication that she moved from there prior to her death. Parents: Stephen Batchelor and Margaret (Margot) Creekmore.
