The earliest known ancestor, William Berry, was born about 1800 in Virginia. He married Catherine Smidt who was born about 1809 in Germany. Their oldest son, Joseph Smith Berry was born in 1827 in Wythe Co., Virginia. Other known children were Mary C. Berry, born about 1832 in Illinois, Nancy E. Berry, b. about 1839 in Illinois, Ellen Berry, b. about 1847 in Illinois and William Rufus Berry, born about 1849 in Illinois. This family was in Wayne County, Illinois by 1840, where William Berry died in Fairfield in October, 1873.
